Dear Brenda,
Suzanne, James & family,
As I sit here, above me is a plaque with Esther's name on it,
and I'm mighty proud to have her looking over me. She was and
continues to be an inspiration to me and thousands of others in
the region and beyond.
Esther represents the best in what community organizing should
be. And her special effort for years to knit something for each
Cunningham Award recipient was the real cherry on the prize.
Our love and appreciation to each of you as you mourn her loss
and celebrate her full, rich life. A great oak has indeed fallen
in our western NC forests, but as in the forest, Esther has already
nurtured and nourished innumerable seedlings. Her work and life
continue through them.
Best,
Monroe
1991 ECA recipient
