Robert "Bud" Eugene Crunkleton, Jr.

Salem, SC - Robert "Bud" Eugene Crunkleton, Jr., age 48, of Lonely Road, Salem, SC passed away Sunday, March 7, 2010 at a USA Hospital in Mobile, AL. He was born in Knoxville, TN, the son of Sherry Johnson Crunkleton and Robert Crunkleton, Sr. of Salem, SC. He was a welder for a construction company and attended Flat Shoals Baptist Church in Salem, SC.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of 25 years, Sarah Jean Baty Crunkleton; his daughter, Rebecca Grace Crunkleton, his son, Adam Eugene Crunkleton, his sister, Karen Rogers of Salem, SC and his brother, David Crunkleton all of Salem, SC.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 13 at 2:00PM in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home in Highlands with Rev. Charles Kennemore, Rev. Frankie Porter and Rev. Junior Jenkins officiating. Burial will be held at the Miller Cemetery. Adam Crunkleton (son), Michael Rogers (nephew), Scott Williams (friend) Bo Fulbright (friend), Anthony Turner (friend) and Pat Sims (friend) will serve as pallbearers. Michael Bradley (friend) will serve as honorary pallbearer.

Dorothy Crawford Waldroop

Franklin, NC - Dorothy Crawford Waldroop, age 94, of Wayah View Drive, Franklin, NC, passed away Wednesday, March 3, 2010 in a local nursing home. She was a native of Macon County, the daughter of the late Hayes Rutherford Snyder and Mary Jane Phillips Snyder. She was married first to Laddie Harrington Crawford, who passed away in 1959 and second to Charles Augustus Waldroop, who passed away in 1968. She was a homemaker, she loved hiking, gardening, reading, and wild flowers. She was a member of Cornerstone Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by three daughters, Jane C. Riddle of Franklin, NC, Sarah C. Niven of Charlotte, NC, and Martha C. Rickman and husband Arnold of Franklin, NC, three sons, Lonnie H. Crawford and wife Karen of Franklin, NC, J. Sam Crawford and wife LaVerne of Pikeville, KY, and Mark S. Crawford and wife Marcia of Franklin, NC. She is also survived by fifteen grandchildren, twenty three great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Pauline S. Love, Mary S. Crawford, Margaret S. Crawford, and Josephine Childers and two brothers, Rutherford Hayes Snyder and Ralph Brabson Snyder.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, March 6th at 11:00am at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Ron Odum and Rev. J. Sam Crawford officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Zion Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will follow the service.

Billy Gerald Penland

Franklin, NC - Billy Gerald Penland, age 76, of E. Hickory Knoll Road, Franklin, NC passed away Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at his residence. He was a native of Macon County, the son of the late Lawrence S. and Gorda Stiles Penland. He was a Veteran of the US Navy during the Korean Conflict. He retired from General Motors in 1982 as a test driver. He was a member of the VFW Post #7339 and American Legion#108. He attended Hickory Knoll Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Sandra Brown Penland; three daughters, Robin Penland Barrick and her husband Moody of Sky Valley, GA, Denise Schooley and her husband, Alan of Franklin, NC and Jennifer B. Geffen of San Antonio, TX: three grandchildren, Jesse Muns IV, Billy K. Penland and Jodi Fisher ; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Virginia Watts of Franklin, NC. He was preceded in death by a brother, Hoyt Penland and son, Jeffery M. Brown.

Memorial services will be held Sunday, March 7 at 2:00 PM at the Gorda Ruth Chapel, 1206 East Hickory Knoll Road, Franklin, NC 28734.

The VFW Post #7339 and the American Legion Post 108 will conduct Military rites.

Cashiers, NC - Ruth Bernice Buchanan, age 76, formerly of Cashiers, NC passed away Saturday, February 27, 2010 at a Care Center. She was a native of Jackson County, the daughter of the late Joseph Zebulan and Bertie Ruth Hedden Buchanan. She was a homemaker and a member of Yellow Mountain Baptist Church.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Curtis Ross Buchanan and Zebulan Vance Buchanan.

Franklin - Jessie Wymer Mason, age 80, of South Skeenah Road, Franklin, NC went to be with his Lord Saturday, February 27, 2010 at his home. He was born February 8, 1930 in Rabun County, GA, to the late Dan and Ida Hastings Mason. He loved his family and enjoyed gardening, camping and fishing. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Maggie Ledford Mason of the home; two sons, Danny Mason and wife Dana of Franklin, NC, Bill Mason and wife Chris of Franklin, NC; one sister, Sarah Keener of Clayton, GA; one brother, Frank Mason of Franklin, NC; six grandchildren, Toby, Jody, Zachery and Amanda Mason, Shawnna Key and Ryan Dunn; six great-grandchildren, Max, Makenzie, Landon, Tyler Mason, Wyatt and Chloe Key; several nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Julie Chastain; three brothers, Earl, Woodrow and J.R. Mason.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Eddie Stillwell and Rev. Frank Rodriquez officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Toby Mason, Jody Mason, Zachery Mason, Ryan Dunn, Michael Key and Gary Mason will serve as pallbearers. Brevard, NC & Highlands, NC - Walter Cline "W. C." Calloway, age 80 of Brevard, NC, formerly of Highlands, NC, passed away Sunday, February 21, 2010 at Cedar Mountain House in Brevard. He was a native of Macon County, the son of the late Claude and Florence Henderson Calloway. He was a horse farmer in Ocala, Florida. He was loved by many and was very colorful. He attended Dunns Rock Baptist Church in Brevard.

He is survived by two sisters, Victoria "Vickie" Thompson and husband Bob of Jasper, GA and Doris Underwood of Cullowhee, NC; four brothers, C. L. Calloway and wife Melba of Lecanto, FL, Joe Calloway and wife Linda of Ocala, FL, Ronnie Calloway and wife Lazelle, of Brevard, NC and Donnie Calloway and wife Bitsy of Highlands, NC; several nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Junior Calloway and Scott Calloway.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 25th at 2:00pm in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home in Highlands, with Rev. Claude Nicholson officiating. Burial will be in Highlands Memorial Park Cemetery. She was a homemaker and a member of Clear Creek Baptist Church. She loved gardening and flowers.

Hawkins II and his wife Sabrina of Highlands, NC; two step-sons, Dr. Larry Hawkins of Huntsville, AL and Jerry Hawkins of San Diego, CA; three grandchildren, Corbin, Hayley and Samuel Hawkins; four sisters, Opal McCall and Doris Hicks of Highlands, NC, Gail Henry of Easley, SC and Mae Ivester and her husband Dennis of Satolah, GA; two brothers, Homer Bryson and his wife Eloise of Franklin, NC and Wymer Bryson and his wife Bonnie of Highlands, NC. Franklin, NC - Earnest Jackson Passmore, of Dandridge, Tennessee, formerly of Franklin, NC, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, February 17, 2010 in a Knoxville, Tennessee hospital. He was a native of Macon County, the son of the late Johnnie Coleman and Elsie Palmer Passmore. He was a small engine mechanic and was a member of Greens Chapel Baptist Church. He loved music and playing music. He loved fishing, swimming and most of all he loved his God.

He is surivived by two daughters, Sharon R. Betzhold and her husband, Michael of Lawrenceville, GA and Lisa M. Passmore and her friend, Michael Smith of Franklin, NC; two sons, Ronald E. Passmore and his wife Margaret of Birmingham, AL and Tim Passmore and his wife, Jenny of Gulf Breeze, FL; one sister, Ruby Haskett of Lenoir, NC; two brothers, Henry Passmore of Franklin, NC and Junior Passmore of York, SC; ten grandchildren, Malarie, Lindsay, Amberlee, Brittany, Emily, Holly, Alex, D. J., Ryan and Jeremy. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lola Belle Passmore and Myrtle Mae Passmore; four brothers, Leonard, Herman, Vance and Daniel Passmore.

James Nelson Scott

Highlands - James Nelson Scott passed away early Thursday morning, February 18, 2010 at his home on 608 Hickory Street, Highlands, NC after an extended illness.

Jim was born in New Castle Indiana on December 5th, 1926 and grew up there before moving to Indianapolis after serving in the army and marrying his first wife Mary Louise Knight. He continued to work for Herff-Jones, selling class rings and caps and gowns, moving to Gainesville, Florida in the late 1950’s where he continued a successful career in sales covering most all of the state of Florida schools. He decided to move his family to Highlands, NC in the early 1970’s and make a career change which included a real estate business with partner Earl Heard, the founding of Insurance Services, and an antique shop, Log Cabin Antiques, all of Highlands. After the death of his first wife Louise and retiring, he moved back to New Castle where he married Anna Margaret Antle. After fulfilling his life long dream of restoring and owning a large older home and farm, he moved to Naples, Florida, where he played bridge, golfed and socialized with friends at Forest Lakes community and Quail Run Golf Course and County Club.He continued to spend his summers in Highlands, golfing at Highlands Country Club, of which he was a founding member and playing bridge, as he was an accomplished player.

In addition to his parents, Lewis and Anna Belle and his wives, Louise and Margaret, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Myla Edwards and Joyce Leraas, and one brother Mervyn Scott. He is survived by one brother, Donald Scott of New Castle, Indiana and four children, sons Lance Kevin Scott and wife Pam Smith Scott of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, Michael Kim Scott and wife Brenda of Gainesville, Florida and two daughters, Leesa Lynn Crisp and husband Chuck of Cumming, Georgia and Karin Ann Potts and husband Terry of Highlands, North Carolina, as well as twelve grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 21 at 3:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church of Highlands with Dr. Don Mullens, with family receiving friends one hour prior between 2:00 and 3:00 at Coleman Hall in the church, burial will be held at Highlands Memorial Park immediately following the service. Christopher Potts, Eric Fielding, Justin Chapman, Josh Martin, Brooks Scott and Leigh Scott will serve as pallbearers.

Connie Mae Evans

Franklin, NC - Connie Mae Evans, born December 30, 1949, went to be with Jesus on Wednesday, February 17, 2010. She died at Angel Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late George W. Evans and Lucy Campbell Evans. She is survived by her mother and one sister Emma Lovett and husband Walt, and one brother Eddie Evans and wife Teri. Nieces are Kim Hedden and husband Barry, Valerie Norton and husband Steve, Christy Barnett and husband Jimmy, and is also survived by one nephew, Dustin Evans. Three great-nieces, Olivia Hedden, Lauren Norton, and Callie Barnett. One great-nephew, Blake Hedden also survives. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Duel Carpenter, and a niece, Morgan Hedden.

When Connie was school age, she attended a special class in Franklin taught by Mrs. Evelyn Pangle and other teachers. Connie attended Murdock School in Butner, NC for four years. While at Murdock she was taught and trained in everyday life skills. It was a long way to Butner back then and a great sacrifice for her mom and dad to leave her in the care of strangers but they trusted the Lord to take care of her.

From 1960 to 1969 she attended Western Carolina Center in Morganton, NC., where they continued to give her love, training and special care. Macon Citizens for the Handicapped was a great part of her life for many years. She enjoyed all the activities there as she made bells and rabbit foot key chains. While attending MCH, Connie enjoyed bowling and brought home many trophies.

Connie was a member of Iotla Baptist Church and was in the Dorcas Sunday School Class and attended the J.O.Y. Club. Connie loved Pickin on The Square and gospel music.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 19th at 2:00pm at Iotla Baptist Church, with Rev. Steve Reeves, Rev. Stacy Woods, Rev. Vic Greene and Rev. Brandon Breedlove officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00pm, Friday at the Church. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Walt Lovett, Dusty Evans, Jimmy Barnett, Steve Norton, Barry Hedden, and Ronnie Campbell, Blake Hedden as an honorary pallbearer, and her caregivers with PDQ Nursing, Tonja Harden, Lisa Buchanan, andTammy Charles,and Heaven Scent and Pam Raby with Hospice.

Charlie Lamar Henry

Highlands, NC - Charlie Lamar Henry, age 78, of Highlands, NC, passed away Sunday, February 14, 2010 in Highlands-Cashiers Hospital. He was a native of Macon County, the son of the late Charlie M. and Brittie Webb Henry. He was a caretaker and had worked for Potts Block Company, the US Forest Service and Department of Transportation. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Highlands.

He is survived two sisters, Bessie I. Zachary of Franklin, NC and Annie Mae Hensley of Scaly Mtn., NC; a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 18th at 2:30pm in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home in Highlands, with Rev. Gary McCall and Rev. Oliver Rice officiating. Burial will be in Highlands Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Gene Green, Michael Green, Matthew Green, Everett Brewer, Chris Brewer, and Justin Brewer.

Helen Crisp Taylor

Frankin, NC - Helen Crisp Taylor, age 93, of Holly Springs Church Road, Franklin, NC, passed away Wednesday, February 10, 2010 in a local nursing home. She was a native of Macon County, the daughter of the late George F. Crisp and Emma Corbin Crisp. She was married to Zeb W. Taylor, who passed away in 1951. She was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and enjoyed canning, gardening, and quilting. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, W. Eugene Taylor, and Bill W. Taylor, a grandson, Darrin E. Taylor, two sisters, Edith Kell and Ila Mae Sorrells, and a brother, Grady Crisp.

She is survived by a daughter, Maxine T. Cass and husband James E. of London, Kentucky, a daughter-in-law, Hazel Taylor of Franklin, NC; a sister, Marie Corbin of Franklin, NC; two brothers, Frank L. Crisp and Roy P. Crisp both of Franklin, NC; two granddaughters, Judith Cass Black and Glenda Cass Jones; four grandsons, James S. Cass, Billy, Randy and David Taylor; six great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 13th at 3:30pm in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home, with Rev. Ben Cabe officiating. Burial will be in Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Wylie "Judd" Jess Shope

Franklin, NC - Wylie "Judd" Jess Shope, age 87, of Fox Hollow Circle, Otto, NC, passed away Wednesday, February 10, 2010 in a local nursing home. He was a native of Macon County, the son of the late Alec and Julie Mashburn Shope. He was a construction worker. He was a US Army Veteran serving during World War II. He received six Bronze Stars and walked with General Patton. He was also a member of the VFW.

He is survived by a son, David Shope and wife Marty of Charlotte, NC; two sisters, Betty Brown of Franklin, NC and Ruth Holbrooks of Highpoint, NC. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Crawford and Madge Dowdle and three brothers, Nels Shope, J. D. Shope and Frank Shope.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, February 13th at 2:00pm at Rush Cemetery, with Rev. Davis Hooper officiating.

Franklin, NC - Annette " Annie" Marcella Griffiths, age 81, of Locust, NC formerly of Franklin, NC passed away Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at her residence in Locust, NC where she resided with her grandson David and his family. She was born in New Haven, Connecticut the daughter of the late Pasquale and Jennie Ginnestra Stellato. She was married to Eugene Griffiths who passed away in 1987. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church where she served as parish council, a Lector, and an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion and was on the Board of Trustees.

She is survived by one daughter, Linda Nardelli of Mint Hill, NC; one sister, Betty Rivers of Orlando, FL and one brother, Marcelino "Mark" Stellato of North Fort Myers, FL; three grandsons, David Nardelli of Locust, NC, Tony Nardelli of Catawba, NC and Edward "Eddie" Nardelli of Mint Hill, NC; five great-grandchildren, MaKayla, Nicholas, Tori,Tony and Brock.

A memorial mass will be held Saturday, February 20 at 12:00 Noon at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Father Tien Duong officiating. A private burial will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery.

She was a lifelong native of Macon County, the daughter of the late James and Zoa DeHart Farmer. She was married to Thurman "Bud" McConnell who passed away October 1, 1999. She was a homemaker and a member of Black Mountain Baptist Church. She enjoyed spending time with Benjamin and liked talking to her friends on the phone.

She is survived by one daughter, Linda Higdon and her husband, Bill of Franklin, NC and one son, Bennie McConnell of Franklin, NC; one granddaughter, Megan and one great-grandson, Benjamin; one sister, Louise Robinson of Morganton, NC and one brother, J.L. Farmer and his wife, Frances of Brevard, NC.

Joy Lowe Dooley

Highlands, NC - Joy Lowe Dooley, age 64, of Highlands, NC went to be with her Lord, Saturday, February 6, 2010. She was born in Rabun County, GA, the daughter of the late James N. and Bernice Rice Lowe. She was married to Rev. Edward L. Dooley who passed away in 1997. She was an assistant administrator for 12 years at the First Baptist Church of Highlands where she was also a member. She loved the Lord and enjoyed her Church work.

She is survived by her son, Rev. Jeremy Dooley and his wife Jaime of Auburn, AL; three brothers, James L. Lowe and his wife Nancy, Bill Lowe and his wife Christine all of Highlands, NC and Rev. Roy Lowe and his wife, Clara of Franklin, NC; one grandson, Ryne Dooley. She was preceded in death by a sister, Lenora Lowe.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at the First Baptist Church of Highlands at 2:00 PM with Rev. Roy Lowe, Dr. Dan Robinson and Rev. Jeffrey Porter officiating. Burial will be held at Highlands Memorial Park. Greg Porter, Joel Porter, Tim Gibson, Caleb Bowers, Phillip Lowe, Josh Bryson, Brian Lowe and Bobby Sanders will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons of the First Baptist Church of Highlands.

Highlands -George Stanley Picklesimer 51, of Cumming, GA formerly of Highlands passed away Friday, February 5, 2010 in Cumming. He was a native of Macon County and a son of the late JohnL. and Bertha Owens Picklesimer.

Surviving is a sister Kathy Bale of Franklin, one brother John Picklesimer of Cumming GA. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday Feb. 7, 2010 at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Rusty Wolfery officiating.

Franklin, NC - On February 1,2010 , Virginia Carroll Justice Orndorff went home to be with her Maker and Savior. She was preceeded in death by her mother Virginia Braswell Justice her father Rass Justice and her husband of 26 years Vaughan Orndorff.

She was a loving mother of two daughters Carolynn Orndorff Gray and Michelle Orndorff  Waters. She was a firm and loving grandmother to 8... Jake Waters, Jessa Waters, Breland, Kerigan, Tanner, Kelsey Watts, Rachel Gray, and Brandon Jiang-Gray. She was a loving sister to Mary Sue Justice Webb, and Aunt to Sabrina Justice Ewing, Kayla Webb, Dylan Justice, and Brandon Ewing. She leaves behind a loving caring, friend that was always there for her when many couldn’t be... Clarence Scott.  Carrol’s home church was Dryman’s Chapel Methodist, but after moving closer to town had been loved and accepted at Watauga Baptist Church.

Robert Frenger Goorey, Sr.

Franklin - Robert Frenger Goorey, Sr., age 85, of Franklin, NC, passed away Sunday, January 31, 2010 in a local hospital. He was a native of Charleston, West Virginia, the son of the late Albert Samuel Goorey and Virginia Frenger Goorey. He spent most of his life in Columbus, Ohio. He owned a watch and jewelry store, and it is carried on by his son Raymond. He was a US Navy Veteran of World War II and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. He was a member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, and a member of the Franklin American Legion Post 108.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Julia Russell Goorey; two daughters, Linda Van Scoten of Virginia Beach, VA, and Sheri Goorey Pappas and husband Dorian of Foothill Ranch, CA; a step-daughter, Barbara Buckner White and husband Stephen of Nashville, TN; three sons, Robert Kenneth Bishard and wife Bonnie, of Virginia Beach, VA, Robert F. Goorey, Jr., of Rock Hill, SC, and Raymond Goorey of Pasadena, CA; eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 5, 2010 at 2:00pm in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home, with the American Legion Chaplain officiating. The Franklin VFW Post #7339 and American Legion Post #108 will conduct military rites.

The family will receive friends Friday from 1:00-2:00PM, one hour prior to the service at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home.

Reverend Wayne Clyde Penland

Franklin, NC - Reverend Wayne Clyde Penland, passed away Sunday, January 31, 2010. He was born June 10, 1915 in Towns County, GA, the son of John Burton Penland and Mary Jane Johnson Penland. He is survived by a daughter, Mary Gladys Taylor and two step-daughters, Lou Jean Trulove Phillips and Janice Trulove Henson and husband Doyle. Three grandchildren, Randy Taylor, Regina Taylor Creech and husband James, and Freda Taylor Brooks and husband Chuck. Six great-grandchldren; eight step-grandchildren; a number of step-great-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Miller Trulove Penland, grandson, David Taylor, step-grandson, Robert Sorrells, step-daughter, Mary Ann Trulove Sorrells, son-in-laws, Ralph Sorrells, Don Phillips, Dewey Taylor and step-great-grandson, Chris Sorrells; brother, Von Penland, sisters, Ethel Sims, Irene Kimsey Phillips, Ruby Corpening and Euel Penland also two special nepehws, Harold and Floyd Kimsey.

Wayne was the last of Burt and Mary’s six children. He was the oldest member of Mount Hope Baptist Church. He had served as assistant Pastor at Battle Branch Baptist Church in Clayton, GA. He had also taught Bible classes in several nursing homes in Georgia and North Carolina. He built chairs and stools for family and friends. Wayne loved riding and working with horses and made several trips with earlier Wagon trains. He also used horses logging timber in his younger days. He also did horse shoeing for himself and others.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 3rd at 2:00pm in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home, with Rev. Waymon Lunsford, Rev. Alton Dendy, and Rev. Charlie Bass officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Zion Cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 2:00pm, two hours prior to the service Wednesday, at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home.

Doshie M. Wilson

Highlands, NC - Doshie M. Wilson, age 102, of Wilson Gap Road, Highlands, NC, passed away Friday, January 29, 2010 in a Highlands Nursing Home. She was a native of Macon County, born April 5, 1907 to the late Rufus and Albie Picklesimer McCall. She was married to the late Hubert L. Wilson, who passed away September 19, 1986. She was a homemaker and a member of Clear Creek Baptist Church. She was a loving mother and grandmother and she loved farming and gardening. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

She is survived by a daughter, Frances Wilson Reed of Clayton, GA; a son, Clarence Wilson, and wife, Ella-Mae, of Highlands, NC; eight grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren, and thirteen great-great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at 11:00 a.m.
at Clear Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Walter Wilson and Rev. Everett Brewer officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Creek Community Cemetery.
Ralph Hedden, John Munger, Tommy James, Charlie Reed, Roger Lee, Edwin and Mike Wilson will serve as pallbearers. Jason Woods, Adam Woods, Matthew Wilson, Gerald Hedden, Robbie Reed, Joe Munger and Thomas James will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Johanna Wittig Lemaire

Franklin, NC - Johanna Wittig Lemaire, 99 of Franklin, NC, went home to be with her Lord on the 24th day of January 2010. She was born in Wattensheid, Germany on the 10th day of February 1910. She was the last of seven children born to Wilhelm and Emilie Wittig. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Georg Lemaire, sisters, Emma, Paula, Friedchen, Lieschen, and Martha, and one brother Hannes.

She loved the Lord and was a member of Union Methodist Church of Franklin. She loved gardening, reading the Bible, and her rose bush. She was most loving and unselfish to the many friends that had come to visit with her. Thank you to all that knew my grandmother and visited with her.

She is survived by a son, Luwe Lemaire of Franklin, NC, grandchildren: Angel Lemaire of Franklin, Deanna Stacey and husband Dan of Alabama, Gina Davis and husband Eric of Florida and Christopher Lemaire of Franklin, NC; great-grandchildren, Heidi, Joshua, D. J., Michael, George, Waylon, Amber, Zachary, Taylor; great-great-granchildren, Dakota, Hanna, Savannah, Skiler, and nieces and nephews in the Netherlands.

The family would like to extend its sincere gratitude to the nurses, CNA’s and staff on orange hall at Britthaven of Franklin for their care, support and compassion. She will be solely missed by all. We love you OMA.

Alvia Marie Ledford Carpenter

Franklin, NC - Alvia Marie Ledford Carpenter, age 94, of Hickory Knoll Road, Franklin, NC, passed away Tuesday, January 26, 2010 in a Highlands Nursing Home.

She was a native of Macon County, the daughter of the late Millard David Ledford and Lula Ann Stanfield Ledford. She was married to the late Zeb David Carpenter, who passed away February 14, 1994. She was a member of Prentiss Baptist Church, and had worked at Belden’s for 15 years. She loved family get togethers, loved flowers, gardening and canning.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Nora Jean Carpenter, a son, Edward (Buck) Carpenter, four sisters, Edna McConnell, Vernie Sanders, Lillian Cowart and Queen Shope, and three brothers, Elsworth Ledford, Lake Ledford, and Claude Ledford.

She is survived by two daughters, Olivia Marie Whitmore and husband Wendell, of Conyers, GA and Wanda Lee Cabe and husband Barry, of Otto, NC and a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Carpenter of Franklin, NC; five sons, Leon David Carpenter and wife Vonore, Kenneth Carpenter and wife Audrey, James William Carpenter and wife Doris, Harold Victor Carpenter, and Charles Delano Carpenter and wife Vickie, all of Franklin, NC. Twenty-one grandchildren, thirty-three great-grandchildren, and eleven great-great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 28th at 2:00pm in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home, with Rev. Steve Reeves officiating. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers, Ronnie Carpenter, Chad McKinney, Tracy Carpenter, Ryan Carpenter, Mike Carpenter, Scott Whitmore, Ricky Carpenter, Michael Carpenter, Dale Carpenter, Stevie Carpenter, Bo Carpenter, Barry Cabe, David Keener and James Keener.

Daphne Elizabeth Winstead Powers

Franklin - Daphne Elizabeth Winstead Powers, died on January 23, 2010, at her residence in Cowee Valley, at the age of 84, after a long and valiant battle with cancer. She was a native of Elm City, NC. She was the daughter of the late John Clayton and Pallie Rickman Winstead. She was preceded in death by her husband, W.S. Powers, and her sister, Lou Ree Winstead Batts.

She grew up in Elm City and lived there until she went away to college. She was a graduate of Louisburg College and Woman’s College (now UNC-G). After college and marriage, she moved to Lumberton, NC. Her mother was a native of Macon County, and she spent many childhood memories here with family. She always wanted to live in the mountains and was able to do so since 1987, when she retired here to be near her extended family.

She was employed with the Farm Credit Association in Lumberton for 33 years. She held many positions with the association. She enjoyed her work and her co-workers were blessed to know her. She was a member of Barker’s United Methodist Church, Lumberton, NC, and was very active in her church until she moved full time to the mountains. She has attended and supported Cowee Baptist Church, the church of her forefathers, since being in Franklin.

Faith and Family were the most important things in her life. She had the most uplifting spirit in all circumstances. People came to cheer her up, but left cheered up themselves. Her positive attitude in all things will be remembered by all. One was blessed to know her.

She is survived by her daughter; Brenda Powers Walker, of the home, and her son; Wayne Powers and wife, Jane, of Durham, NC. Also surviving are granddaughters; Kimberly Walker of New York City, NY, and Johelen Walker Courliss, and husband, Ben, of Durham, NC. Her twin great-granddaughters, Natalie and Abigail Courliss, were the light of her life. Her sister, Joyce Phillips, of Franklin, NC, and her brother, Dr. John Winstead, and wife, Linda, of Mesa, AZ, also survive. Many cousins, nieces, and nephews will miss her also.

The family acknowledges the kindness of caregivers who have provided special care: Jessie Wilson, Helen Lynn, Kathy Medford, Gail Lemaster, and Hospice. We thank you.

A celebration of her life will be held at Cowee Baptist Church on Monday, January 25, 2010 at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends at the home and from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at Cowee Baptist Church before the service. The Reverend David Powell and Reverend Jerry Moore will officiate. Burial will be in Cowee Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ben Courliss, Tommy Fouts, Bill Fouts, Guy Fouts, Charles Womack, and Arnold Rickman.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to either of the following: Cowee Baptist Church, Hospice, or Friends of Rickman Store (Little Tennessee Land Trust.)

Wayne Avery Pendergrass

Franklin, NC - Wayne Avery Pendergrass, age 85, of Franklin, NC passed away Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at a local hospital. He was a native of Macon County, the son of the late James Napoleon and Cora Hopper Pendergrass. He was married to Katherine Conley Pendergrass who passed away March 16, 2007. He was retired from the post office after 25 years of service, and was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church. He was a US Navy Veteran. He loved watching baseball. St. Louis Cardinals was his favorite team.

He is survived by two sons, Michael Alan Pendergrass and his wife, Connie of Franklin, NC and Donald Wayne Pendergrass and his wife, Judy of Franklin, NC; four grandchildren, Dustin Pendergrass, Travis Pendergrass and wife Michelle, Brett Pendergrass, and Amanda Bateman. He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held Friday, January 22nd at 2:00pm in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Keith Newell officiating. Burial will be in Carson Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mike Houston, Ross Shields, Hank Southard, Bruce Conley, Mark Reynolds. and Caleb Tallent. Mary Jane Elizabeth Tainter Spieth

Franklin - Mary Jane Elizabeth Tainter Spieth, age 85, of Sylva, NC  passed away January 16, 2010.  She was born in Lakewood, Ohio, March 23, 1924, and was the beloved daughter of the late Leland Brown Tainter and Maude Kendall Tainter and later, her step mother, Muriel Russell Tainter.  She was married to the late Charles E. Spieth for 67 years.  She was a devoted wife and mother.  She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Independence, Ohio.

She had one brother, Leland B. Tainter, Jr. and wife Barbara, of Riverside, California; one daughter, Linda Trubicza and husband Frank, of Sylva, NC; one son, Larry Spieth and wife Joan, of Canton, Ohio.  She had 7 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mary Jane will be remembered most by her love for a good poker game and the joy of antiquing.

A celebration of both Mary Jane and Charles E. Spieth and their love for God and each other will be held June 26, 2010 at 11:00AM at Canal Fulton Baptist Church in Ohio. Interment will be held at the Canal Fulton Cemetery.

Howard Pierce

Franklin - Howard Pierce, age 97, of Kingwood Circle, Franklin, NC, passed away Friday, January 15, 2010 at his residence.  He was a native of Portland, Oregon, the son of the late Charles Norton Pierce and Alberta Jameson Pierce.  He served in the Merchants Marine during World War II, and was a lifetime member of the American Legion.  He was a carpenter and had made mach-ups for North American Aircraft Manufacturing.  He was Catholic but attended the Methodist Church.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by a daughter, June Hunter and husband, Joseph Ripley of Franklin, NC; a son, James Pierce of Duvall, Washington, step-son, Kirk Babcock of Missman, Idaho; Twelve grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren also survive.

Memorials may be made to a Charity of One’s Choice.

Cedric (Whitey) Hefferan

Franklin, NC - Cedric (Whitey) Hefferan, age 84, of Franklin, NC passed away January 11, 2010 at Angel Hospice. He was born in Chicago on Feb. 16, 1925. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, June; three sons, Steven (Krystal)of Boulder, Co, Brian (Patty) of Inverness, IL, Kevin (Jeni) of Wonder Lake, IL; Stepson Steve (Trudy) Mueler of Salt Spring Island, BC; stepdaughter, Wendy (Drake) Mertes of Inverness, IL; 9 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren, and his Annie. He will be sorely missed along with his ’own’ sense of humor.

He was a decorated veteran of WWII, serving in the Third Infantry Division and was wounded twice in action. He retired from Centel Telephone where he had started as a lineman after the war, and was very proud of his role under four presidents as White House Communication Liaison for presidential visits to Chicago’s O’Hare Field.

Whitey was proud of his accomplishments as a high school athelete who never lost his love of sports throughout his life. He played semi-professional hockey as a young man, and had a passion for golf until the end.

The family would like to extend its sincere gratitude to the nurses and staff of Angel Hospital and Hospice for their care, support and compassion. We will be forever indebted to them for their exceptional personal involvement. Contributions to Angel Hospice, 170 Church Street, Franklin, NC 28734 , would be greatly appreciated to help in their acquiring a Hospice Home.
