Keith Edward Williams

Franklin, NC - Keith Edward Williams, 48, died Wednesday, July 28, 2010. A native of Macon Co., he was the son of James Edward Williams of Franklin and Marlene Fox Williams of Franklin. Survivors, in addition to his parents are twin sons Justin Edward Williams of the US Marine Corps and Dustin Keith Williams of Franklin, NC. Also surviving are sisters Kathy Wilson of Sylva, NC and Karen Fouts and Gerald of Franklin, NC.

Keith took much pride in the landscaping work he did. He was especially diligent in caring for the grounds at Mt. Grove Baptist Church where he was a member. He loved NASCAR racing.

Funeral services will be held Saturday July 31, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Ray Fox and Rev. Benny Bagwell officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Zachary Fouts, Brandon Wilson, Gary Fox, Tori Young, Dusty Snider and Jason Henry.

Kevin Michael Petrone

Franklin, NC and Highlands, NC - Kevin Michael Petrone, 59, of Buck Creek Rd., Highlands, NC passed away Thursday, July 29, 2010 in an Asheville hospital. Born in Suffolk Co., NY, he was the son of James G. and Thelma Allmon Petrone of Highlands, NC. He was a Vietnam Veteran in the U. S. Army. He owned and operated his own painting business. He was a member of AA for nine years and a member of Vietnam Veterans of America.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sons James Petrone and wife Jessica and Vincent Petrone both of Highlands, NC; four sisters Lee Ann Pierce of Chattanooga, TN, Susanna Murray and Anna Wilson both of Highlands, NC and Lisbeth Petrone of Coral Gables, FL. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Logan, Tristan and Brooklynn Petrone.

A graveside service will be held Sunday, August 1, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. at 6435 Buck Creek Rd., Highlands, NC. Burial will be in the Petrone Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday, July 31, 2010 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at 6435 Buck Creek Rd., Highlands, NC.

David Bryan Farmer

Franklin, NC - David Bryan Farmer, 45, of Jim Mann Rd., Franklin, NC died Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at his residence. A native of Macon County, he was the son of Virginia (Jean) Guffie Farmer and the late Glenn Farmer of Franklin, NC. He was employed by the Macon County Sheriff’s Office as a Detective on the Drug Task Force and for the past several years by the Franklin Seed Store. He was a member of Longview Baptist Church.

In addition to his mother he is survived by one daughter Megan Farmer Thomas and one son Justin Farmer both of Franklin, NC; one sister Shannon Leigh Babin and Kevin of Franklin, NC and two brothers Glenn Richard Farmer and Beth of Asheville, NC and Joel Wayne Farmer and Vanessa of Franklin, NC. Two grandchildren, Makenzie Thomas and Taylor Thomas, also survive along with several nieces and nephews

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 31, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. David Powell, Rev. Nick Smith and Rev. Lloyd Fish officiating. Pallbearers will be Justin Farmer, Joe Farmer, Kevin Babin, Ricky Farmer, Ronnie McGuire, Tim Fish and Gene Donaldson. The family will receive friends Friday, July 30, 2010 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Mary Louise Bloom

Franklin, NC - Mary Louise Bloom,age 83, of Kelly Cove Rd., Franklin, NC passed away Sunday, July 25, 2010 in a local hospital. Born in Manor, PA she was the daughter of the late Phillip E and Bertha Thompson Good. She was married to Franklin M. Bloom who passed away in 1994. She was a cashier for GTE Telephone Company and a member of Iotla United Methodist Church. She was a volunteer with CareNet and was very involved with her church.

She is survived by two daughters, Diane H. Hallum and David of Mustang, OK and Cheryl J. Daken and William of Franklin, NC; five grandchildren Dina M. Lederer of Indian Trail, NC, Michael Jackman of Ukon, OK, Kelly D. Yates of Valdosta, GA Christopher Hallum of Asheville, NC and David M. Hallum of Mustang, OK. Ten great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 30, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Donna Cobb and Rev. Bud Haire officiating. Entombment will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park in Waynesville, NC.

Franklin, NC - Lynn Spradlin, 49, of Second Street, Franklin, NC passed away Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at his residence. Born in Maryville, TN he was the son of Thomas Jess and Carrie Davis Spradlin of Franklin, NC. He was a floor technician with Britthaven of Franklin for 10 years..

In addition to his parents he is survived by four daughters, Katrina, Angel, Lacy and Hollie; one son Allen; two sisters Patricia and Christine; two brothers Glenn and Melvin. Four nieces and four nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 29 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Phillip Cochran and Rev. Alton Dendy officiating. Burial will be held at Rush Cemetery. Jody Spradlin, Brandon Higdon, Danny Cook, David Hauer, Ronnie Dills and Charles Sanders will serve as pallbearers.

Ralphe Boyd Baker

Highlands - Ralphe Boyd Baker, 78 of Horse Cove, Highlands passed away Saturday, July 24 in Atlanta. He was a native of Haleyville, Alabama, the son of Lucien and Velce Bonds Baker. Mr. Baker served in the Air Force in Germany during the Korean War and later had a flourishing career as a couturier and salesman in high-end retail womens’ fashion at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York and Atlanta. He attended the Episcopal Church of The Incarnation in Highlands.

Surviving are two sons, Andrew Morgan Baker, 34 of Dublin, Ireland and Curtis Bonds Baker, 31 and wife Angela of Atlanta who have a daughter, Lillian Choe Baker; one sister, Betty Randolph of Atlanta and one brother, Robert Baker of Gadsden, AL.

Graveside services were held at 5:00 PM Sunday July 25 in the Horse Cove Cemetery with Rev. Brian Sullivan officiating.

Charitable donations may also be made to Hospice Atlanta or the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation in Highlands.

Pat Burgess

Franklin, NC - Pat Burgess, 49 of Roller Mill Rd., passed away Friday, July 23, 2010 in a local hospital. A native of Macon County he was the son of Charles and Ann Burgess Hall. He was a retired street foreman with the Town of Franklin. A member of Burgess Chapel Church of God in Christ, he loved to hunt and fish, loved drag racing and going to car shows. A 1980 graduate of Franklin High School he was a member of FFA.

In addition to his parents he is survived by one son Patrick Isaiah Burgess of Franklin, NC; Mother of his son Beth Burgess of Franklin, NC, one step-daughter Thia Heater Foster of Clayton, GA, two step-sons Justin Heater of Asheville, NC and Jeremiah Gribble of Franklin, NC. He is also survived by his maternal grandmother Josephine Burgess of Franklin; three sisters Charlene Hall, Christine Hall and Leslie Hall all of Franklin, NC; two brothers Chris Hall of Franklin, NC and Alex Hall of Waynesville, NC and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday, July 26, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. J. W. Gary and Supt. C. W. Johnson officiating. John Owen Cabe

Franklin/Sylva, NC - John Owen Cabe, age 78, of Sylva, originally from Franklin, NC, departed this life July 21, 2010 at Harris Regional Hospital after a short illness. He was born August 2, 1931 in Macon County, the son of the late James H. Cabe and Arie C. Cabe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters and five brothers.

He was a graduate of Franklin HIgh School, and was a US Navy Veteran stationed in Guam. He retired with NC State Department of Transportation as an engineer after 35 years. He also worked in the survey field. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church. He loved gardening and flowers.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Frances Vinson Cabe, daughter, Katrina C. Parris and husband Kenneth of Sylva, NC; and his loving granddaughter, Ashley Nicole Parris of Hilton Head Island, SC.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 24th at 11:00 am in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home, with Rev. Eddie Stillwell and Rev. Josh Hyde officiating. Burial will be in Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Kenny Parris, Danny Parris, Brian Corbin, James Roper, Johnny Gribble, Roy Tucker, Jason Hull, Art Provincher, and Tex Corbin.

Charles "Chick" Bryson

Franklin - Charles "Chick" Harris Bryson, 91 of 30 Pressley Road, died Saturday at the Charles George Veteran’s Community Living Center in Asheville, North Carolina.

A native of Macon County, he was the eleventh surviving child of Earvin Felix and Paralee Brooks Bryson. He was preceded in death by three sons, Samuel Ted Ledford, Harrison Eugene Bryson and Charles "Tommy" Bryson.

He leaves to survive, his wife Mildred Bryson, daughters Yvonne Bryson of Franklin, NC and Bobbie Bryson of Crofton, MD, one son Bert Bryson of Canton, NC, grandchildren Kimberly of Charlotte, NC, Jada and Norman Bryson of Franklin, three great-grandchildren, a half-sister Ann Burgess Hall of Franklin, and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was a Private First Class in the United States Army’s 92nd Division. Private Bryson served his country in Italy. His tour of duty was from 1942-1945.

Many years were worked at Cunningham Feed Store, Burlington Industries Hosiery Mill, Burlington Industries Rabun Plant and the U. S. Forest Service Older American Program.

He was a long time member at St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church where he served on the Vestry Board as Senior and Junior Warden. He attended Burgess Chapel and was a faithful member of the church choir "The Joy Bells". Currently, he was attending church at Liberty Baptist Church in Sylva, NC where he was a member of the Men’s Choir and Holy Tabernacle also in Sylva, NC.

He was known through out the county for his love of singing, dancing and walnuts.

In October 2009, Chick was priviledged to participate in the Honor Air trip to Washington, DC to visit the World War II memorial. In January 2010, The Macon County Human Relations Council awarded Chick the Outstanding Honoree Award for being the sole surviving African American World War II veteran in Macon County.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at 1:00 pm in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Cyprian’s Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home. Tommy Norman

Franklin, NC - Tommy Norman, age 78 of Old Murphy Road, Franklin, NC passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2010 in a local hospital. Born in Jackson County, he was the son of the late David A. and Mary Etta Crawford Norman. He was a U. S. Army Veteran of the Korean War. He had worked at Burlington Industries for several years and was retired from Dayco. He was a member of Macon County Coon Hunters Club. He was a member of West Franklin Church where he was a Deacon, Trustee and Choir Leader.

He is survived by one daughter Vicki Norman of Sylva, NC; two sons Doug Norman of Franklin, NC and Mike Norman and Brenda of Pigeon Forge, TN; one sister Betty Sutton of Hendersonville, NC. Seven grandchildren and two great-granchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 17, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Clifford Patterson officiating. Burial will be in the Norman Family Cemetery. Betty Compton Queen

Franklin, NC - Betty Compton Queen, 73 of Georgia Rd., Franklin, NC passed away Monday, July 12, 2010 in an Asheville hospital. A native of Macon County she was the daughter of the late Clay and Mae Wood Compton. She was married to R. D. Queen for 54 years. She was a homemaker, worked at Cagle’s Restaurant and was owner of Classic Beauty Supply and Salon. She was an avid NASCAR and dirt track race fan and a loving Mother and Grandmother. In addition to her husband she is survived by one brother David Joe Evans of Cummings, GA and one grandson Jason Brown of the home. She was preceded in death by a daughter Judy Lynn Brown and two brothers Richard Compton and Carl Evans.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 15, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Don Moffitt officiating.

Lester Reed Jr.

Highlands - Lester Reed Jr.(Poley) age 76, of the Goldmine Community passed away Friday, July 9, 2010 at his residence.

He was a native of Macon County, the son of the late Lester Reed Sr. and Pearl Frady Reed. He was married to Evelyn Watts Reed who passed away in 2001. He was a heavy equipment operator and a member of Goldmine Baptist Church. He loved his family and friends. He loved gardening, hunting, and fishing. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War.

He is survived by three daughters, Teresa Davis and husband Oren, Diane Watts and husband Gilmer, and Karen Hooper and husband Danny all of Franklin, one son Stanley Reed of Highlands,NC; three sisters, Gloria Younce of Franklin, Helen Henson of Franklin and Norma Hopper of Atlanta, GA. ; two brothers, George Reed and Charles Reed of Franklin. Seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by two sons,Vernon and Marvin Reed, one sister LaVerne Dills and two brothers, Eldon Reed and Sheridan Reed.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday at Goldmine Baptist Church with Rev. Alton Dendy and Rev. Charles Reed officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Moriah Cemetery.

Doyle Wayne McCall, Gary McClure, Doug McCall, Corey A. Watts, Shelby Davis and D.J. Owens will serve as pallbearers. The Franklin VFW Post 7339 and American Legion Post 108 will conduct military graveside rites.

Lovada Taylor Ledford

Franklin, NC - Lovada Taylor Ledford, age 73, of Mimosa Drive, Franklin, NC passed away Wednesday, July 7, at her residence. She was a native of Macon County and was the daughter of the late Doc and Dixie Pendergrass Taylor. She was married to Kenneth Ledford for 52 years and was retired from Belden Electric Cord after 25 years service. She was a member of Windy Gap Baptist Church and enjoyed Church, family and children.

In addition to her husband she is survived by two daughters, Pamela Miller and husband Jerry and Kathy Thompson all of Franklin, NC; one son, Kennie Ledford of Franklin, NC; two sisters, Gracie Coggins of Franklin, NC and Dolly Pattillo of Smyrna, GA; two brothers, Jim Taylor of Lorain, OH and Tom Taylor of Franklin, NC. Nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Furman and Allen Taylor.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 11, 2010 at 2:30 p.m at Windy Gap Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Bishop and Rev. Greg Rogers officiating. Walter Neville Bryson

Highlands, NC - Walter Neville Bryson, age 85, of Highlands, NC, passed away Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital. He was a native of Macon County, the son of the late Walter Allen Bryson and Ruth Young Bryson. He was a US Army Veteran of World War II. He began business in 1951. He was a farmer, owner of Bryson Grading and Trucking since 1985, owner of B & S Haulers since 1997, and operator of Hickory Flats Farm since 1961, which he dearly loved, and owner of Brysons Gulf Service for 34 years. He was a member of Highlands United Methodist Church, and a member of the Macon County Planning Board. He was the first President of the Highlands Lions Club, a former member of the Board of Commissioners in Highlands, former member of Macon County Board of Education and Macon County Board of Commissioners. He loved Highlands, his family and his Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Walter N. Bryson, Jr., and a brother, William Y. Bryson.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Edna Phillips Bryson; two sons, James P. Bryson and wife Sheila and J. Michael Bryson and wife Becki T. all of Highlands, NC; a daughter-in-law, Margaret Bryson; a sister, Mozelle Postell of Robbinsville, NC, five grandchildren, Josh (Mandi), Jennifer (Brian), Ryan, Jaime, and Maegan.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 10, 2010 at 11:00am at Highlands United Methodist Church, with Rev. Paul Christy officiating. Burial will be at Highlands Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Robins, Willard Turpin, Clarence Carpenter, Fred Bowers, Joe Luke and Jim Luke. Honorary pallbearers will be Walter Wilson, Gene Talley, Jack Horton, and Jerry Sutton. Gerald "Jerry/J-Dog" Droze

Franklin, NC and Plantation, FL - Gerald "Jerry/J-Dog" Droze, age 69, of Franklin, NC and Plantation, FL passed away Tuesday, July 6, 2010. Born in Washington, DC he was the son of Faye Penniger Droze and the late Haywood Droze. He was married to Elizabeth Shade Droze for 39 years. He was in law enforcement for 23 years and was a retired Special Agent for the Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms Bureau.

He was Vice President of Enforcers Motorcycle Club, active in Shop with a Cop, Toys for Tots, Shawn Blanton Law Enforcement Memorial Ride and various other rides to benefit veterans, law enforcement and our community.

In addition to his wife he is survived by daughter Kimberly Alicia Droze Lynch (Jason Lynch, Steven Hebert) of Plantation, FL; son Christopher Ryan Droze and wife Carolina of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; two brothers, Haywood Daniel Droze of LaPlata, MD and Ronald Droze of Englewood, FL. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Emma Lynch, Addison Lynch and Kailer Droze.

A memorial service was held Thursday, July 8, at 6:00 p.m at Enforcers Motorcycle Club House, 834 Cat Creek Rd., Franklin, NC. Memorial service will be held in Florida on Friday, July 30 at 6:00 p.m. at Broward PBA Hall at 2901 SW 26th Ter., Dania Beach, FL 33312. Brevard, NC & Franklin, NC - Hayden Thomas Ferguson, Jr., age 83, of Brevard, NC went to be with the Lord on July 6, 2010. He was born June 5, 1927. A native of Cherokee County, he was the son of the late Hayden T. Ferguson, Sr., and Claudia Sudderth Ferguson. He was preceded in death by wives Helen Sumner Ferguson and Tina Duncan Ferguson.

Surviving are his wife, Jimmie Peterson Ferguson of Brevard, a daughter Gina Steinbicker and husband, David of Sylva; a brother, James W. Ferguson of Dallas, GA and a sister, Frances Sue Ferguson Bridges of Middleburg, PA. He is also survived by a granddaughter, Natalie Steinbicker, and a grandson Seth Steinbicker; two step sons, Charles R. Loftis, Jr and wife Suzie of Brevard and James M. Loftis, Sr. and wife Rosie of Mt. Pleasant, SC; step granddaughters, Brandy Moore and husband Rodney of Lake Stevens, WA, and Ava Loftis; step grandson, Michael Loftis and two step great granddaughters, Brianna and Addison Moore. He was blessed to have many nieces and nephews as well.

Mr. Ferguson was retired from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol as a Line Sergeant and he was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the United States Navy with the Seabees.

Hayden, also affectionately called H.T. or "Ferg" was loved and respected by all who knew him. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and loved to grow a garden. He enjoyed going on hunting trips with his loyal friends and fellow sportsmen. He was a hard worker and was fiercely loyal to his profession as a Line Sergeant with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. He was known all over Western North Carolina for being " A Legend" while serving with the Patrol. He was highly respected by his fellow Patrol co workers as well as the citizens of the many counties he patrolled during his career. He was fair and diligent and always caught the "bad" guys and protected the good citizens of North Carolina. He has been a great inspiration to all the officers of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol who risk their lives each day to serve and protect the citizens of North Carolina.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, July 11, 2010 at 3:00PM at Peachtree Memorial Baptist Church in Murphy, NC and will be conducted by Dr. Chester Jones, Rev. Mike Jordan, Rev. Larry Madden and Rev. David Reeves. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Burial will be at the Peachtree Baptist Church Cemetery with burial rites by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 325 N. Broad Street, Brevard, NC 28712, for improvement of the sound system.

Victoria (Vicki) Jean Russell Whitacre

Franklin - Victoria (Vicki) Jean Russell Whitacre of Franklin, formerly of Toccoa, GA died on Tuesday, July 6th in Asheville, NC. The daughter of the late Sydney King Russell and Jean Love Russell she is survived by two sons, Michael J. Vannucci of Jacksonville, FL; Richard Jeffrey Vannucci of Franklin, NC; two daughters, Rachel Buenavista and husband Clarence and Jennifer Zang both of Jacksonville, FL; two sisters, Melinda Russell Womack of Highlands, NC and Lorena Love Russell of Asheville, NC and seven grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Larry Whitacre and a daughter, Sarah Zang.

She loved books, writing, going to Church and being with her family. She will be remembered for her keen mind and sense of humor, but most of all for her enduring faith in God.

Graveside services will be held Friday, July 9 at 11:00 a.m. at Highlands Memorial Park. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 10 at 11:00 a. m. at New Beginnings Church of Toccoa in Toccoa, GA with Pastor Brad Crowe officiating.

William "Shorty" Cochran

Franklin, NC - William "Shorty" Cochran, age 52, of Watauga Road, Franklin, NC passed away Monday, July 5, 2010 at a local hospital. Born in Jackson County, NC he was the son of Betty Colwell Cochran of Franklin and the late Bill Cochran. He was married to Becky Sanders Cochran for thirty five years. He owned and operated his own auto body shop business. He enjoyed spending time with his family.

In addition to his mother and wife he is survived by a daughter, Amy Cochran Byrd of Franklin; two sons, Jason Cochran and his wife Becky and Adam Cochran all of Franklin. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Morgan Byrd, Madison Byrd, Tristin Cochran and Taylin Cochran.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

John Otto Nausbaum

Highlands, NC - John Otto Nausbaum, age 96, of Mayflower Drive, Highlands, NC, passed away Sunday, July 4, 2010 at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital from complications after a fall. He was a native of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and lived in Brecksville, Ohio for many years until they retired in a home that Otto designed and built.

He was a neighbor, playmate and schoolmate of Ruth Braun, whom he married in 1937. They were married for 71 years.

Otto had a very successful career at Standard Oil of Ohio (now BP) from about 1939 until he retired in 1975, interrupted by service in the US Army from 1943 to 1946. After retiring Otto and Ruth built and lived in several homes in Florida, North Carolina and Mexico.

Otto is predeceased by his wife Ruth Braun Nausbaum.

Eva Christine Gregory Snipes

Franklin, NC - Eva Christine Gregory Snipes, age 70, of Lariate Loop, Waynesville, NC, passed away July 2, 2010 at John Keever Solace Center in Asheville, NC. Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late George Washington Gregory and Stella Wood Gregory. She was a cook at Jim’s Drive In. She was of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by two daughters, Debbie King of Sylva, NC and Barbara Thomas of Gainesville, GA; two sons, Dean Snipes of Dahlonega, GA and Don Snipes of Waynesville, NC; two sisters, Gert Bagwell of Pickens, SC and Evelyn Bryant of Waynesville, NC; three brothers, Hayes Gregory of Kentucky, Lonnie "Sonny" Gregory of Tennessee and Ronnie Gregory of Rockhill, SC. Three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Lorine Mashburn and Betty Gregory and one brother, Gilmer Gregory.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on July 3, 2010 in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Garland Driver officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00-2:00 p.m. on July 3, 2010 in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home.

Ruth Clark Brown

Franklin, NC and Snellville, GA - Ruth Clark Brown, age 90, of Third Street, Franklin, NC passed away Thursday, July 1, 2010 in a local hospital. Born in Fulton County, GA she was the daughter of the late John Henry Clark, Sr. and Florida Chambers Clark. She was married to the late Robert Brown. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. She is survived by one sister Mallie Fincher of Ocala, FL and one brother Frank Clark of Bowman, GA. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, July 2, 2010 in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home.

Mrs. Brown will then be taken to Snellville, where the funeral services will be held at Tim Stewart Funeral Home in Snellville, GA.

Billy Jack Stewart

Cashiers, NC - Billy Jack Stewart, age 72, of Jodytown Road, Cashiers, NC, passed away Saturday, June 26, 2010 at his residence. He was a native of Jackson County, the son of the late John Luther Stewart and Ollie Mae Moss Stewart. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Donette Burnette Stewart. He had worked in construction as a painter. He was a US Veteran, having served in the National Guard. He loved to farm and was a member of Yellow Mountain Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Karen Wooten and Donna Collins both of Greer, SC; a son, Brian Stewart of the home, two brothers, Odell Stewart of Jodytown, and John Edward Stewart of Pickens, SC; five grandchildren, Kimberly McConnell, Joshua Coggins, J. C. Gregg, Andrea Bryson and Richard McConnell; five great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 30th at 2:00pm in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home in Highlands, with Rev. Johnny Norris officiating. Burial will be in Stewarts Burial Ground. Pallbearers will be Mitch Bryson, Brent Sprinkle, David Chastain, Harley Evitt, Richard McConnell, and Isaac Bumgarner.

Mamie Virginia Hooper Raby

Franklin, NC - Mamie Virginia Hooper Raby, 89, of the Watauga Community of Franklin, NC, died Saturday, June 26, 2010. She was a native of Jackson County, the daughter of the late Tom Ruben and Dollie Gosnell Hooper. She was married to the late George Lewis Raby who died in 1994. She was past president of the Home Extension Club and Macon Women’s Missionary Union. She was a very active member of Watauga Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday School Teacher, she loved to bowl and travel.

She is survived by one daughter Betty Francis Rowland of Franklin, NC; three sons Robert L. Raby and his wife Ruth of Franklin, NC; James David Raby and his wife Linda of Nashville, TN; Thomas Edgar Raby and his wife Jane of Olatha, KS; two sisters Velma Plemmons and Lois Ensley both of Sylva, NC. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and sixteen great-granchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister Naomi Green and two brothers Thomas and Otto Hooper.

Funeral services will be held Monday June 28, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Watauga Baptist Church with Rev. Wesley Price, Rev. David Williams and Rev. Roy Lowe officiating. Pallbearers will be Larry Bishop, Norris Clouse, Doug Brooks, Jimmy Ammons, Doug Johnson, George Roper and Norman Baker. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday, June 27, 2010. Charles G. Caye, Sr

Augusta, GA and Highlands, NC - Charles G. Caye, Sr age 82, passed away on June 22, 2010. He was born in Atlanta, GA, the son of the late William C. Caye, Sr and Catherine G. Caye. He honorably served in Germany during WWII-US Army 7th Field Artillery-Big Red 1 as a Staff Sergeant and Medic. He was an accomplished businessman and President & CEO of WC Caye & Co. until his retirement. An avid golfer, he was a Foundation Member of the Atlanta Golf Classic and the Atlanta Country Club. He was the consummate family man. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his older brother, William C. Caye, Jr.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Dorothy Godwin Caye; brother, John C. Caye; children, Melinda Caye Bernt (Ron), Charles Giddings Caye, Jr (Deborah), and Morris Godwin Caye; grandchildren, Heath Agee, Lindsay Caye, Jonathan Agree, Charles Giddings Caye, III, Adrienne Caye Chamberlin (Tray), Caroline Caye, Ashlee H. Caye, Brittaine H. Caye, & Jayson H. Caye; great-grandson, Whit Agee and several nieces and nephews.

A private service and burial was held in Highlands, NC on June 25, 2010 with the Rev. Robert Fain officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to a Hospice of your choice.

Dorothy Nell Sanders

Franklin - Dorothy Nell Pannell Sanders, 82, of Lake Emory Road, Franklin, NC, passed away Saturday June 12, 2010 in an Asheville Hospital. She was a native of Macon County, the daughter of the late Harrison and Mabel McGaha Pannell. She was married to Wiley J. Sanders who passed away in 1988. She was a homemaker and a member of East Franklin Baptist Church. She loved gardening and flowers.

She is survived by her daughter, Juanita Doris Solesbee and husband Bill, of Franklin, NC; two sons, Vance Todd Sanders of Estill Springs, TN and Victor Lee Sanders of Franklin, NC; one sister, Marilee Mashburn of Franklin, NC; three grandchildren, Janet Solesbee of Spartanburg, SC, Ronald Solesbee of Franklin, NC; and Joshua Sanders of Manitowoc, WI; four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren also survive. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Elenor M. Duvall, Bonnie Hayes, Helen Greene and Edna Sanders and one brother, Ernest S. "Bill" Pannell.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 15 at 2:00PM in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home, with Rev. Robert Dryman officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Nathan Clayton Blanchard

Franklin - Nathan Clayton Blanchard, age 25, of Franklin, NC passed away Wednesday, June 09, 2010 at his residence. He was a native of Macon County, the son of Clayton Scott Blanchard of Franklin, NC and the late Mary Kay Blaine. He was a painter and a member of Wells Grove Baptist Church. He loved helping others, loved his dogs and hunting and fishing.

In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Jessica Blanchard; one daughter, Elizabeth Ann of the home; paternal grandmother, Anna Belle Houston of Franklin, NC; two sisters, Lisa Blachard and Tonya Blachard of Franklin, NC.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 13 at 2:00PM at Wells Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Terry Dixon and Rev. Robert Dryman officiating. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery. John Blaine, Jerry Cook, Harry Cook, Bruce Higdon, Jackie Cook and Lawton Houston will serve as pallbearers.

  Virginia Southard Brookshire

Spartanburg – Virginia Southard Brookshire, age 95, died peacefully Thursday, June 10, 2010 at White Oak Manor, Spartanburg.

Born in Franklin, NC on August 5, 1914, Mrs. Brookshire was a daughter of the late Jesse Robert and Hattie Angie Carpenter Southard. She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph Clinton Brookshire. Mrs. Brookshire was a member of St. James United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Brookshire is survived by a daughter, Brenda Lee and husband Joe of Moore, SC; two grandchildren, Randy Lee and wife, Melissa of Simpsonville and Amy Lee of Huntersville, NC; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, June 12, 2010 at 2:00 PM at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Franklin, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in remembrance of Mrs. Brookshire to the Hospice Care of South Carolina, 16 Mills Avenue, Greenville, SC 29605.
