Rev. Edgar David Riley Hillsborough, NC - Rev. Edgar David Riley of 518 Terrell Road, Hillsborough, NC, passed away suddenly on Friday afternoon, April 12, 2013, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill, NC. A beloved son, brother, husband, father and friend; he will be greatly missed by many. David was born on January 19, 1952, in Durham, NC to the late William Edgar "Ed" and Minnie Lee Crabtree Riley. He was a lifelong resident of Hillsborough. He graduated from Orange High School and received his associate degree from the Art Instruction School in Minneapolis, MN. He worked as an award winning graphic artist for the Chapel Hill Newspaper for over twenty-five years before attending and graduating from the Southeastern Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC in 1996. David served as pastor
for churches in North Carolina and Virginia and was a devoted Christian
his entire life. Most recently, he was employed at Brookdale Senior Living
in Chapel Hill, NC, as a driver. As a minister, he spread his strong belief
in the message of God's word and faith in the Lord our Savior to all those
in his congregation and community. He knew that with love and faith all
was possible. His huge heart and desire to serve others implored him to
do for others, and to be much more than a driver at Brookdale. He taught
the residents art classes and built bird houses with them. He imparted
his vast knowledge of Orange and Durham Counties through his weekly scenic
bus tours. He was "Chief" to all Brookdale residents. Dave was
always ready to lend a helping hand or be an active listener in need.
As evident by his most extensive book collection, David was a voracious
reader. He was an ardent Carolina sports fan (we always knew where to
find him during March Madness week). He was a firm believer in passing
on life's lessons to people of all ages. Family was an extremely
important part of David's life. David married the love of his life, Susan
Moore, on December 4, 1982. He was a devoted and compassionate husband

His days with team mates and memories of Georgia Tech football meant a great deal to him. After college, he went to work with Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Michigan. He then went on to serve in the Army in the Anti Aircraft Artillery Division in Niagara Falls at Fort Niagara from 1953 to 1956. After his service, Dick went to work for Matthews Construction Company in Atlanta. After a few years, he began his own general contracting company, Pretz Construction Company, in 1969. He built commercial construction around Atlanta until he retired in 1991. After retirement, Dick and Jeanie moved up to the western North Carolina mountains to live year around where he could enjoy the outdoors, hunting, fishing and walks with his dogs! He played tennis with friends for many years in Atlanta and North Carolina. Dick loved Jeanie, his family, the beautiful N.C. mountains and his companionable dogs! He was so proud of this great country and its vast patriotic history and had a passion for stories of our founding fathers, the civil war, and the early settlers. Many very heartfelt thanks and love go to Dicks doctors, wonderful nurses and caregivers who took such loving care of Dick and his family during these past challenging years. They each are a true blessing to all. A memorial service is planned for 2:30 pm on Friday April 5th, 2013 at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs. David Ebert Highlands, NC - On
November 23, 2011, Dave began a journey down a path to survive pancreatic
cancer. The obstacles on his route became too great on December 15, 2012.
Dave was predeceased by his father, Robert J. Ebert; his sister, Pat;
brother, Bill, and brother, Ted. Giving him strength
to carry on was Sam Gunter, his devoted partner of 33 years and spouse
since March 23, 2012. Family members missing Dave are his mother, Hazel
of Visalia, CA; brother, Jack (Cheryl) of Johnson City, NY; brother, Tom
of Clovis, CA; sister in law, Geordie (Ted) of Visalia, CA; sister in
law, Paula (Bill) of Rancho Mirage, CA and brother in law, Jay Dann (Pat).
His loving in laws include mother in law, Ruth Gunter; brother in law
Don (Jim); sister in law, Carol (Frank) Hall; sister in law, Joyce (Cecil)
McLean; sister in law, Mary Ann Gunter, all of SC, along with numerous
aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, all of whom will feel his
absence. Dave was a personality who gathered friends wherever he went,
many of whom traveled far and often to support him through this difficult
time, for which he always expressed gratitude and love. Dave was born in Oswego,
NY on October 3, 1954, educated at St. Paul's Academy, Oswego Catholic
High School, and graduated from Kings College in Wilkes Barre, PA. After
pursuits in the furniture industry and antique business, Dave spent most
of his career as senior director marketing at AT&T in Atlanta, GA.
Dave would say that his hobby was carpentry, but he was an artist who
knew how to draw out the beauty in whatever he saw, be it flowers, yards,
furniture, or houses. Most notable is the 1797 house in Washington, GA
on which he and Sam were completing authentic restoration. Without question,
Dave recognized the beauty in people as well, never was heard uttering
an unkind word, always a gentleman, known for his imagination, humor,
commitment, intensity, and patience. Everyone who knew Dave appreciated
these qualities, as noted by his former AT&T senior vice president
Jerry Cheadle, "I know you will continue to make significant contributions
to the good of our society because that is an important part of who you
are." Services and burial
for Dave, took place on December 22, 2012 in Highlands, NC. A later celebration
of remembrance will be scheduled in the spring of 2013 for all who wish
to express their thoughts and memories, but were unable to attend at this
time. In place of flowers,
kindly consider a donation to Johns Hopkins Pancreatic Cancer Research
Center, Kimmel Development Office, 1 Charles Center, Suite 234, Baltimore,
MD 21201. Further, please pray that Dave's experience can help to lead
down the path to the end of this disease. Bryant-Grant Funeral

Thomas Curry Merchant, Jr. Highlands, NC - Thomas Curry Merchant, Jr., a former newspaper owner and publisher, passed away peacefully in Highlands, NC on December 5, 2012, at the age of 96. He was a resident of Madison, FL for 82 years and of Highlands, NC for 14 years. Survivors include
his four children, Shirley Merchant Johnson (Jim) of Highlands, NC, Mae
Merchant Clark (Larry Lokken), of Gainesville, FL, Thomas Curry Merchant
III and Mary Anthony Merchant, Ph.D. (John Green), both of Atlanta, GA;
three grandchildren, William Burton Clark V (Danielle) of Chapel Hill,
NC, Corrie Elizabeth Clark, Ph.D. (Andy Turner) of Washington, D. C.,
and Major Christopher D. Wills, USMC (Julie); and five great grandchildren,
Gavin Thomas Clark, Selwyn Taylor Clark, Sayge Clark Turner, Olivia Taylor
Wills and Thomas Christopher Wills. Thomas Curry Merchant,
Jr. was born April 2, 1916 in Madison, FL, the only child of Mae Talmadge
McKeithen Merchant and Thomas Curry Merchant, Sr. In 1938 he received
a B.A. in Journalism from the College of Arts and Sciences at the University
of Florida. At Florida, he was the manager of the band and a member of
Theta Chi fraternity. He graduated from the University of Florida College
of Law in 1939 and was admitted to the Florida Bar. In 1943, he graduated
from the Harvard Business School with a Masters in Business Administration. During World War II,
he was stationed at various posts in the United States, including Maine,
where he participated in a test of winter equipment for a possible invasion
of Japan, and Greenville, SC, where he met his future wife, Shirley Anthony
Merchant. They were married from 1946 until her death in 2000. After the war, Mr.
Merchant decided not to practice law and returned to Madison to work with
his father at the weekly newspaper his father and uncle had purchased
in 1910, the Madison Enterprise Recorder. Later, when asked how long he'd
been in the newspaper business, he'd say since age 4 when he began helping
his father around the print shop. He was always interested in political
matters and served two terms in the House of Representatives of Florida
Legislature, from 1949 52. Afterward, he would
say his best legislation while in office was bills requiring all livestock
to be fenced and Klan members to be unmasked. After his father's
death in 1968, he became the primary editorial writer for the paper, expressing
his thoughts in a column entitled "The Passing Parade", short
for "The Old Country Editor Views the Passing Parade". This
column could be humorous but was just as likely to be a biting critique
of current political issues and politicians or a spotlight on misguided
antics of anyone from the city commissioners to the governor. He was actively
involved in civic activities such as the Lions Club and the Rotary Club
and always particularly highlighted local educational accomplishments
in the paper. In the early 60's, he set up a bookstore in the newspaper
office to help support the then newly established North Florida Community
College. Mr. Merchant was a
faithful, life long member of the Madison Presbyterian Church, serving
as a deacon and then as an elder for most of his adult life. He remained
with the church even when there was a split in the church and the majority
of members left to form a more conservative church. He was a member of
the Gideons for more than sixty five years. In Highlands, he attended
Holy Family Lutheran Church. In North Carolina,
he volunteered as a tutor at the Highlands Literacy Council, as a proofreader
at The Highlander newspaper, then as the Copy Editor at Highlands' Newspaper. Mr. Merchant will
be missed and remembered for his kind and generous spirit, loyalty to
family and friends, and steadfast adherence to the principles in which
he believed, even, in the case of his support for the local Health Officer,
Dr. Deborah Coggins, who was dismissed from her position for holding a
lunch meeting with an African American nurse in 1956, at the cost of permanent
loss of some local advertisers and threats to his family. The family would like
to especially thank his physician, J.Scott Baker, M. D., and his staff,
and his caregivers and friends at Chestnut Hill of Highlands. Their wonderful
care and friendship during his final years greatly enriched his life. A graveside service
will be held at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Madison, Florida, on December 14,
2012 at 11 a.m. Honorary pallbearers are James J. Sale III, Colin Kelly
Howerton, Jack Wade, and Sandy, Jimmy and Zet Smith. Arrangements are
being handled by Beggs Funeral Home in Madison. In lieu of flowers,
the family asks that memorial donations be made to Four Seasons Hospice,
571 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731, Gideons International, Att.
Marvel Curtis, 46 Clover Lane, Franklin, NC 28734 or to a favorite charity. |

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, December 6, 2012 at the Townson-Smith Chapel. The Reverends Delmar Holder and Noah Williams will officiate. Burial will follow at Gunter Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at the Chapel, prior to the service. Townson-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
