Franklin, NC
- Baby Blankenship-Cousins, infant child of Sarha Louise Blankenship
and Trey Henry Cousins, died Friday, November 23, 2012.
In addition
to the parents, the baby is survived by a brother, Lyric Blankenship
of Franklin, maternal grandparents. Lane Blankenship of Nevada,
Joy Blankenship, Fred Greeninger, and Howard Fry all of Oregon;
a number of Aunts and Uncles also survive.
Memorial services
will be held Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at 7:00 pm in the Chapel
of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home, with Rev. Clark Moss officiating.

Franklin - Mildred
LaFlam Badger, 96, passed away at the Macon Valley Nursing Home
in Franklin, NC. She was a native of Vermont, born October 2, 1915
in St. Albans, VT. She was the daughter of the late James and Sophia
Warhurst of East Calais. She was a graduate of Montpelier Seminary
in 1932. She belonged to the Rebekhas and was a past president.
She retired from the National Life Insurance Co.
She was preceded
in death by her first husband Earle K LaFlam; her second husband
Harry D. Badger; her infant daughter, Jean LaFlam, and her youngest
son, Lawrence E. LaFlam.
She is survived
by her oldest son, Kenneth LaFlam and his wife, Joyce of Vancouver,
WA; her daughter- in- law Nancy Martin LaFlam of Franklin, NC, along
with nine grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren, and four great-great
grandchildren.
A small service
will be preformed at the East Calais, VT Cemetery in September,
2012. In lieu of flowers, please send any memorials to hospice.

- Frank Heyworth Baker, Jr, age 76, of Franklin, NC passed away
Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at his residence. Born in Baltimore,
MD, he was the son of the late Frank and Viola Gaston Baker. Frank
had lived in Macon County for eighteen years and was a painter in
construction; a veteran of the United States Air Force; a loving
father, husband and grandfather and was of the Methodist faith.
He is survived
by his wife of forty seven years, Charlotte Hook Baker; five daughters,
Dorothy Baker of Cashiers, NC, Sheila Hopkins of Easley, SC, Terri
Tew of Poquoson, VA, Vicki Taliaferro of Cashiers, NC and Kristine
Newman of Tampa, FL; one son, Frank Baker of Cashiers, NC; one sister,
Marion Petters of Mooresville, NC and one brother, Dale Kelly of
Baltimore, MD. A number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren
also survive.
No funeral services
are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations

- Ralphe Boyd
Baker, 78 of Horse Cove, Highlands passed away Saturday, July 24
in Atlanta. He was a native of Haleyville, Alabama, the son of Lucien
and Velce Bonds Baker. Mr. Baker served in the Air Force in Germany
during the Korean War and later had a flourishing career as a couturier
and salesman in high-end retail womens fashion at Saks Fifth
Avenue in New York and Atlanta. He attended the Episcopal Church
of The Incarnation in Highlands.
Surviving are
two sons, Andrew Morgan Baker, 34 of Dublin, Ireland and Curtis
Bonds Baker, 31 and wife Angela of Atlanta who have a daughter,
Lillian Choe Baker; one sister, Betty Randolph of Atlanta and one
brother, Robert Baker of Gadsden, AL.
Graveside services
were held at 5:00 PM Sunday July 25 in the Horse Cove Cemetery with
Rev. Brian Sullivan officiating.

may also be made to Hospice Atlanta or the Episcopal Church of the
Incarnation in Highlands.

June 17, 2012. Born in Sharp Co., AR, he was the son of the late
David and Edith Ball. He was married to Cheryl Haines Ball for 23
years. He was a Veteran of the United States Navy serving during
the Cuban Crisis. He was a maintenance supervisor for General Motors;
a member of Gem Capital Auto Club; a lifetime member of NRA and
volunteered at the Macon County Sheriffs Office.
In addition
to his wife he is survived by one daughter, Wendy Gallagher and
husband Chris of Ionia, MI; two sons, James T. Ball, Jr. of Grand
Rapids, MI and Gregory D. Ball and wife April of Riley Township,
MI; one sister, Mattie Mitchell of Paragould, AR; a niece, Rhonda
Mitchell; a great niece, Johanna Chamberlain; two great nephews,
Tony and Scott Chamberlain and three grandchildren, C. J. Teuscher,
Austin Butler and Lucas Ball. He was preceded in death by a brother,
Troy Mitchell.
Funeral services
will be held Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at 6:00 PM in the Chapel of
Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Tenett Norris officiating. The

- Edward Anthony Banks age 81, of Franklin, NC, passed away Wednesday,
March 14, 2012. He was a native of South Brooklyn, New York, the
son of the late Herman and Mary Raciopii Banks. He was an innovator
in aviation and worked as an executive in that industry for the
military and private organizations. He also was a gifted artist,
starting with cartoons and advancing to murals. Later, Ed was a
teacher for an adult education center. He met his beloved wife when
he was only 19, married her and their love story continued for the
next 65 years. A fabulous father a, loyal and loving husband, and
a man of great integrity; Ed was an exceptional man. Having only
a high school education, his accomplishments were many due to his
great intelligence and charming character. Once his company lawyer
claimed he was "the most intelligent man he ever met"
even telling him to go back to school and join him as a company
lawyer due to of his exceptional mind.
He is survived
by his wife of 62 years, Stephanie Patricia Curcio Banks; a daughter,
Stephanie Walker of Chandler, AZ; two sons, Edward Banks of Milton,
FL and Ronald "Casper" Banks of FL; a sister, Mary Banks
of Tallahassee, FL; a special niece, Mia Banks, five grandchildren;
Ben, Ron, Tricia, Tara & Zachary, great-grandchildren Tyler,
Nicholas, Hailey, Michael Jr., Lucas & Thomas, and wonderful
friends, Laurel & Bob Cerritelli of Franklin, NC. He was preceded
in death by a brother, William "Bill" Banks and a nephew,
Michael Banks. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 19, 2012
at 12:00 noon in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home, with Father
Tein officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior
to the service at the funeral home.

away Sunday, February 17, 2008 at a local nursing home. She was
a native of Macon County, the daughter of the late Homer R. and
Margie Vinson Norton. She was married to Merritt S. Barnes who passed
away 1991. She worked in food services for the public schools in
Macon County until 1958 and then resided in Savannah, GA. where
she worked in food services for 40 years. After the death of her
husband, she returned to Macon County. Mrs. Barnes was a member
of Sugarfork Baptist Church where she was an assistant sunday school
teacher and was a choir member.
She
is survived by her two sons, Thomas N. " Tom" Hunt and
his wife, Karen of Apex, NC and Robert "Bob" Homer Hunt
and his wife, Sharon of Franklin, NC; one sister, Jewell "Judy"
Jamison of Franklin, NC and one brother, Homer P. Norton of Monks
Corner, SC; two grandchildren, Bryan and Noel Hunt. She was preceded
in death by a infant daughter, Caroline and a infant son, Merritt
Barnes.

- Betty Jayne Johnson Barnes, age 64, of Dryman Ridge Road, Scaly
Mtn., NC passed away Friday, April 29, 2011 at her residence. She
was born in Knox County, TN, the daughter of the late George and
Maude Gadd Johnson. She was a seamstress for Clayburn Manufacturing
and was a member of the Assembly of God Church. She was a loving
wife, mother, and grandmother. She was the secretary for F &
F Paving and was a member of the Highlands Chapter #284 Order of
Eastern Star.
She is survived
by her husband of 33-1/2 years, Fred H. Barnes; her daughter, Sandra
Crunkleton of Scaly Mtn., NC and a step-daughter, Gail Butler of
Swanee, GA; two sons, Matthew Barnes and his wife, Chris of Chapel
Hill, NC and Richard Barnes and his wife, Mandy of Scaly Mtn., NC;
one sister, Roseletta Parrott of Knoxville, TN. Nine grandchildren
also survive. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jamie Crunkleton
and two sons, Scott and Jimmy Crunkleton.
Funeral services
will be held Monday, May 2 at 2:00PM in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant
Funeral Home in Highlands with Rev. Al Sizemore officiating. Burial
will be held at the Scaly Mtn. Methodist Church Cemetery. The Highlands

She
is survived by her three sons, Ronnie Barnes and his wife, Pattie
of Townsend, TN, Danny Thomas Barnes and his wife, Kathy of Franklin,
NC and Gary Jarvis Barnes of Tellico Pines, TN. Five grandchildren
and ten great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death
by two sisters and two brothers.

Lee Barry, 49, of Highlands passed away Saturday, June 9, at her
residence in Highlands, NC. She was born in Lexington, KY, the daughter
of Dan and Joann Sturgeon Chapman. She was a devoted mother to two
daughters and committed to a life time of service to many different
community organizations. She was a member of Our Lady of the Mountains
Catholic Church.
Surviving in
addition to her parents is her husband of 30 years, Michael J. Barry,
two daughters Tiffany L. Ahlers and husband Travis of Sahuarita,
AZ and Lauren H. Sapp and husband Owen of Ft. Lewis, WA. Sister
Laura Ann Rosenthal and husband Mark with their daughter Eve of
Highlands, NC., two grandmothers Thelma Sturgeon of Walton, KY and
Marie Blizzard of Diamond Bar California, and several loving aunts,
uncles and cousins.
Danise was a
student nurse at Clayton General in the Emergency Room and at West
Paces Ferry Hospital in the nursery department. She was an active
member of organizations helping the military, animals and the American
Cancer Society. Danise enjoyed exercising outdoors and participated
in a triathlon after age 40. She will be remembered for her love
for her family, passion and enthusiasm for life, desire to help
those around her and beautiful smile. She was a friend to those
in need, always willing to listen and inspired those around with
her positive attitude and faith in God. As a testament to her wonderful
desire to help others, during her illness she continued to give
her love and time to volunteering.
The family will
receive guest from 6 to 8 PM Monday evening at Bryant-Grant Funeral
Home in Highlands, NC.
Funeral Mass
will be Tuesday June 12, 2012 at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic
Church with Father Dean Cesa officiating at 11 AM. Burial will be
in Highlands Memorial Park.

Edward Bateman, Sr.

Edward Bateman, Sr., age 86, of Lake Emory Road, Franklin, NC, passed
away Sunday, March 6, 2011, in a local hospital. A native of Macon
County, he was the son of the late George and Maude Baldwin Bateman.
He was married to Ruth Edwards Bateman who died in 2005. He was
a WWII veteran of the US Navy and worked in tunnel construction
with his brothers for eighteen years following WWII; then was a
Deputy Sheriff for seven years. He was elected Sheriff in 1974 and
served until 1982. He owned a tire shop with Bud Green and retired
from DOT in 1992. He attended Prentiss Church of God and was a member
of Junaluska Masonic Lodge #145.
He
is survived by one daughter, Terri Hunter and husband, Walter, of
Franklin; one son, Eddie Bateman, and wife, JoAnn, of Franklin;
two sisters, Launa Stegal and Wanda McDaniel both of Franklin; and
two brothers, Howard Bateman and James E. "Shorty" Bateman
both of Franklin. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Jonathan
Hunter, Luke Bateman and Matthew Bateman and three great-grandchildren,
Kylie, Kandis and Jadian Hunter. He was preceded in death by five
brothers, James Huell Bateman, Billy Bateman, George Bateman, Jr.,
Buddy Bateman and Tommy Bateman.
Funeral
services will be held Thursday, March 10, 2011, at 1:00 pm at Prentiss
Church of God with Rev. Tim Hayes, Rev. Stacy Woods and Rev. Don
Moffitt officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Junaluska
Masonic Lodge #145 will conduct graveside rites and Franklin VFW
Post #7339 and American Legion Post #108 will conduct complete military
graveside rites. Pallbearers will be nephews, David Cheek, Darryl
Bateman, James Bateman, Jr., Lynn McDaniel, Tony Lewis, Eric Hall
and Chuck Bateman. Honorary pallbearers will be Bud Green, David
Houston, George Barrett and Tracy Tallent.

- Edith Tallent Bates, age 92, of Bates Branch Road, Franklin, NC
passed away Saturday, February 16, 2008 at a local nursing home.
She was a lifelong resident of Macon County, the daughter of the
late Harve and Callie Gregory Tallent. She was married 61 years
to Barnett Bates who passed away February 11, 2000. She was a nurse's
aid for a Asheville Hospital and she was a midwife for several years.
She was a homemaker and was a member of Black Mountain Baptist Church.
She
is survived by her daughter, Grace T. Allen and her husband, Sam
of Columbia, SC; a daughter-in-law, Sally Anderson Bates of Stockbridge,
GA; one sister, Reva Jones of Franklin, NC; one brother, Wayne Tallent
of Franklin, NC. Four grandchildren, Pattie Trotter, Lynn Knott,
Glenn Bates and Barney Bates. Nine great-grandchildren and several
nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by a
son, Eugene Roger Bates, two sisters, Frances Sanders and Gladys
Sanders; three brothers, Elmer, Glenn and Harold Tallent.
Funeral
services will be held Tuesday, February 19 at 1:00 PM at Bryant-Grant
Funeral Home with Rev. James Wilson officiating. Burial will be
held at Rush Cemetery. Bruce Tallent, Ricky Tallent, Danny Tallent,

McGaha of Franklin, NC, one brother Fred Sanders both of Franklin,
NC, fifteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by two daughters Hattie Woodall, and Beatrice
Bates, two sisters and three brothers.

as a Quality Control Inspector. She was a life time member of Louisa
Chapel United Methodist Church, and a member of the Carson Community
Club.

addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 47 years
Dolen Bates of Franklin, NC, one sister Audrey Ledbetter and her
husband Max of Franklin, one brother Dan Gibson and his wife Edna
Earl of Franklin, NC. A number of beloved nieces and nephews also
survives. She was preceded in death by three brothers Carol, L.
T., and Robbie Gibson.

15, 2012. Born in Macon County he was the son of Maybelle Guffey
Bates of Franklin, NC and the late George "Bo" Bates.
He was married to Debbie Bateman Bates for 28 years. He was a personal
care assistant at Grandview Manor for 31 years and attended East
Franklin Baptist Church.
In addition
to his mother and wife, Mitchell is survived by one son, Lee Bates
of Franklin, NC; three sisters, Ann Dills, Sherry Boeshears and
Sarah Bryson all of Franklin, NC; two brothers, Shawn Bates and
Richard Bates both Franklin, NC and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his father he, was preceded in death by one brother,
Michael Bates.
Funeral services
will be held Thursday, May 17, 2012 at 2:30 pm at East Franklin

NC passed away Thursday January 7, 2009 at Albany, GA. Mrs. Baty
was married to Earl Baty who passed away in 2008. She was a native
of Oconee County, SC and a daughter of the late Herschel and Grace
Crowe Deal. She was a retired School secretary and a member of Mercedes
Baptist Church.
Surviving is
one daughter, Donna Cleveland and her husband James of Dawson, GA,
two sons, David Baty and his wife Missy of Sylvester, GA and Richard
Baty and his wife Sondra of Santa Rosa Beach, FL.. Also surviving
are two sisters, Ollie Waller of Tampa, FL and Dorothy Daniel of
Tallahassee, FL, one brother, Derrill Deal of Martinez, GA. Eight
grandchildren, Melanie, Josh, Erin,Caleb, Haven, Brett, Chris and
Matt Boe also survive.

Highlands, NC - Earl Forrest Baty, age 75, of Albany, GA, passed
away Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at his residence. He was a native of
Macon County, the son of the late Henry Jackson Baty and Mary Crane
Baty. He was a US Navy Veteran, having served during the Korean
War. He was retired from Coats and Clark Textile Company, where
he was a Production Manager. He was past President of the International
Little League, and was active in Boy Scouts and American Red Cross.
He was past President of Carolina Hunting Club and a member of Mercedes
Baptist Church.
He
is survived by his wife of 54 years, Audrey Deal Baty; one daughter,
Donna Cleveland and her husband James of Dawson, GA; two sons, David
Baty and his wife Missy of Sylvester, GA and Richard Baty and his
wife Sondra of Destin, FL; one sister, Lois Patterson of Seneca,
SC; three brothers, John Baty of Highlands, NC, Clarence Baty of
Norcross, GA and Herbert Baty of Alpharetta, GA; six grandchildren,

- John William (Pluck) Baty, 92, of Sassafras Gap Road, Highlands,
NC passed away Friday, May 8, 2009 at a Highlands-Cashiers Hospital.
He was a native of Macon County, the son of the late Henry J. and
Mary Silla Crane Baty. He was married to Eva Hedden Baty who died
June 15, 1999. Mr. Baty was a Marine Veteran of WWII and was a retired
carpenter and painter.
He
is survived by one son, James Hedden Baty of Waverly, TN; two brothers,
Clarence Baty of Norcross, GA and Herbert Baty of Alpharetta, GA.
4 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren also survive. He was
preceded in death by a daughter, Jane B. Rogers.
Memorial
services will be held Sunday, May 10 at 5:00 PM in the Chapel of

is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Dase Baty; two daughters,

Baty of Seneca, SC; three sons, Charles Floyd Baty, Roy Eugene Baty
and Russell Scott Baty all of Highlands, NC; one sister, Judy Deal
of Highlands, NC; three brothers, Robert Baty of Franklin, NC, Carl
Baty of West Union, SC, and Roger Baty of Highlands, NC. Ten grandchildren
and two great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death
by one sister, Connie Jenkins and one brother, Clarence Baty.

away Thursday, April 2, 2009 at Mountain Trace Nursing Center in
Sylva. She was a native of Macon County, the daughter of the late
Alex Ammons and Margaret Ann Leatherman Ammons. She was married
to Harry A. Beale who passed away in 1991. She was a homemaker and
a member of Ellijay Missionary Baptist Church. She was a loving
mother and grandmother.
She
is survived by her two sons, Ronnie Beale and his wife Cissy of
Franklin, NC and Richie Beale and his wife Dee of Black Mtn., NC;
one sister, Nancy Locklear of Winston Salem, NC; five grandchildren,
Kristi Culpepper and her husband, Joe of Franklin, NC, Christopher
Beale of Pasedena, TX, Cara Beale of Equador, Evan Beale of Jefferson
City, TN and Barrett Beale of Franklin, NC. Two great-grandchildren
also survive. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Ruby Rogers,
Emma Ray and Hazel Dills and one brother, Edison Ammons.

- Jay Michael Bean laid down his earthly burdens on Thursday, October
9th. Born February 17, 1976, he grew up and lived most of his life
in Gastonia, and was a member of Flint Groves Baptist Church. He
attended UNC-Charlotte and CPCC School of Culinary Technology.
Jay
is survived by his parents, Michael and Patti Fraley Bean; grandparents,
Bill and Vivian Fraley, Darlos Bean and Bryan Bean; a chosen sister,
Alexys Myers; Kara Lynn and Katie Baker Bean; aunts Sharon Horne
and Judy Bean Farnsworth; and cousins Brad Myers, Taylor Myers,
and Eric Mixon. Jay also was part of a large extended family.
The
room always lit up when Jay entered. Even as he dealt with multiple
sclerosis and other illnesses, he always had a smile on his face
and something cheerful to say. The world is a better place for his
having been here. As a curly blonde headed kid, he was the well
deserved center of attention. He was showered with love and prayers
all of his life. Jay loved to cook and entertain his family and
friends. His smile, his enormous personality, and his wit will be
missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

student at Macon Middle School, and was of the Baptist faith. She
loved her dogs, Puppy and Tico. Sarah lived for the moment, she
was positive, respectful, energetic and was not afraid to try anything.
She was competitive, stubborn and never met a stranger. Sarah was
loved by everyone who knew her. She will be missed by her family
and friends.
In
addition to her parents, she is survived by her paternal grandparents,
William H. and Libby Beck, her Nana Frankie Beck,her step-grandmother,
Nanny Bonny Harkins; a step-father Les Elliott; three sisters, Violet,
Kelsie and Gracie Elliott; one brother, Scott Elliott; four uncles,
six aunts, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death
by her maternal grandparents, McKinley and Pauline Hudson, a sister,

- George Scheinder Bell, age 83, of Franklin, NC passed away Friday,
October 14, 2011 at a local hospital. He was born in Camden, New
Jersey and was raised in Dover, Del. He moved to Macon Co. in 1965.
He was the son of the late John Lewis and Elise Schneider Bell.
He was married to the late Betty Keener Bell. He and his wife Betty
owned and operated the Downtowner Restaurant, the City Restaurant,
Bells Restaurant, and Bells Auction Barn. He was a licensed
auctioneer, a volunteer for the county rescue squad. He flea marketed
up to a month before his death, he was also known for his humor.
He is survived
by four children, Melody Cooper and husband John; Georgeanna and
husband Kenneth; Bill Bell and friend Linda Rowe; Cindy Hoffman;
a companion Gale Harlan of 11 years; 14 grandchildren and 18 great
grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

and enjoyed gardening and being outdoors. He is survived by his
wife of 65 years, Maggie Crane Bell.

Franklin, NC; one sister, Kitty Hodgins of Sedro Wooley, WA; one
brother, Ralph Bell of Otto, NC; two grandchildren, Rob Bell and
his fiance, Kim of Otto, NC, and Brooke Waldroop and her husband
Chris of Franklin, NC; three great-grandchildren, Maddox, Maveric
and Mace Waldroop. He was preceded in death by a son, Joe Bell,
four sisters, Bertha Carpenter, Lena Shope, Ruby Dills and Blanche
Bradley; two brothers, Harvey Bell and J. R. Bell.

Emory Theology, Erskine Theology and Penn College of Theology Church.
He was Rector of Episcopal Church of St. Stephens in Eutaw, AL.

addition to his parents, he is survived by two sons, Gregory Michael
Bennett of Memphis, TN and Andrew William Bennett of Sylva, NC;
one brother, Martin Alan Bennett of Franklin, NC.

and husband John of St. Cloud, FL; three sons, Scott Howell Bichard
of Crossville, TN, Michael Andrew Bichard and wife Becky of Orlando,
FL, and John Thomas Bichard of St. Cloud, FL; a step-son, Scott
Allen and wife Shannon of St. Cloud, FL and one brother, Carl Benny
Bichard of Crossville, TN. Seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild

years. She was the last member of her immediate family.

Billingsley was preceded in death by four sons; Juan Billingsley,
Joe Ed Billingsley, Jimmy Billingsley and Bobby Billingsley; by
five brothers; Ransom Brown, Ed Brown, Lee Brown, Lloyd Brown and
Harry Brown; and by three sisters; Belle Watkins, Edna Dryman and
Dolly Billingsley; she is survived by two sons; Gene Billingsley
and Homer Billingsley, both of Scaly Mountain, NC; three daughters,
Ruth Vinson, Alice Holt and Gail Head all of Scaly Mtn., NC; twenty-three
grandchildren, forty- three great grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

NC - Mary Frances Tanner Blaine, age 78, of Franklin, NC passed
away Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at a local nursing home. She was
born in Clay County, NC the daughter of the late Creed and Faye
Hogsed Tanner. She was married to Gene "Bud" Lewis Blaine
who died April 11, 2003. She worked in factories and was a member
of Double Churches "Cartoogechaye Church of God" where
she was a former Sunday School Teacher. She enjoyed cooking and
helping others.
She
is survived by her children Ricky Blaine and wife, Sue of Franklin,
NC, Janet Beer and her husband, Jeff of Victor, Montana, Timothy
Ray Norris and wife Pat of Winder,GA; Faye Vinson and her husband
Ralph of Laurens, SC, John Blaine and his wife, Mary Lee of Franklin,
NC; one sister, Louise Moss Teague of Cramerton, NC; two brothers,
Noland Tanner of Rock Hill, SC ad Jack Hooper of Gastonia, NC. Ten
grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren also survive. She was
preceded in death by a daughter, Kay Blaine and a brother, Jimmy
Hooper.
Funeral
services will be held Thursday, December 31 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel
of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Dryman and Rev. Phillip
Cochran officiating. Burial will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery. Kenneth
Blaine, David Blaine, John Blaine, Dean Buchanan, Duke Buchanan,
Randy Tanner, Greg Tanner and Chris Wallace.
The
family will receive friends, Thursday, December 31 from 10:00-11:00

June 09, 2010 at his residence. He was a native of Macon County,
the son of Clayton Scott Blanchard of Franklin, NC and the late
Mary Kay Blaine. He was a painter and a member of Wells Grove Baptist
Church. He loved helping others, loved his dogs and hunting and
fishing.

to his father, he is survived by his wife, Jessica Blanchard; one
daughter, Elizabeth Ann of the home; paternal grandmother, Anna
Belle Houston of Franklin, NC; two sisters, Lisa Blachard and Tonya
Blachard of Franklin, NC.

NC - Cora Dean Bowers, age 89, of Franklin, NC, passed away Tuesday,
March 4, 2008 in a local nursing home. She was a native of Macon
County, the daughter of the late Savalia Bowers and Ziddie Houston
Bowers. She was retired from Rabun Mills, where she worked for twenty-six
years. She enjoyed all kinds of crafts and loved children. She was
a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church.
She is survived by one sister, Ruth Brown of Franklin, NC. Several
nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by two
brothers, and six sisters.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 7th at 3:00pm in the
Chapel of Byrant-Grant Funeral Home, with Rev. Gary McCoy officiating.
Burial will be at Sugarfork Baptist Church Cemetery. Family and
friends will serve as pallbearers.

Louise Bloom,age 83, of Kelly Cove Rd., Franklin, NC passed away
Sunday, July 25, 2010 in a local hospital. Born in Manor, PA she
was the daughter of the late Phillip E and Bertha Thompson Good.
She was married to Franklin M. Bloom who passed away in 1994. She
was a cashier for GTE Telephone Company and a member of Iotla United
Methodist Church. She was a volunteer with CareNet and was very
involved with her church.
She is survived
by two daughters, Diane H. Hallum and David of Mustang, OK and Cheryl
J. Daken and William of Franklin, NC; five grandchildren Dina M.
Lederer of Indian Trail, NC, Michael Jackman of Ukon, OK, Kelly
D. Yates of Valdosta, GA Christopher Hallum of Asheville, NC and
David M. Hallum of Mustang, OK. Ten great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services
will be held Friday, July 30, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of
Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Donna Cobb and Rev. Bud Haire

"Ted" Bowen
Hiwassee GA - Ret. Sgt. Theodore (Ted) Bowen, MSP passed away in
Hiawassee, Georgia, on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 after a short battle
with brain cancer.
Mr.
Bowen was born Thursday, June 15, 1939 in Gardiner, Maine. He acquired
his love for the outdoors from fishing and hunting in the western
Maine area. Ted was proud to have served the people of Maine as
a State Police Trooper for 20 years. In 1983, he retired and moved
to Georgia to live with his family for his remaining years, taking
up the skill of taxidermy. He was a member of McConnell Memorial
Baptist Church, and was active in missions work and the local community.
Mr. Bowen had served his country in the U.S. Navy.
He
was preceded in death by his father Asa Bowen, mother Ruth Nason
Judd; step-father John Judd; step-mother Edith Bowen; sister-in-law,
MaryLee Bishop; and mother and father-in-law, Ligah and Bertie Hall.
Ted
is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Carla (Hall) Bowen of
Young Harris; daughter, Deborah and Curtis Blackwell, of Cumming
, Georgia; son, Douglas and Debi Bowen of Dimondale, Michigan; daughter,
Allison and Larry Honea of Cumming; sister, Judy and Jimmy Shows,
of Jonesboro, Louisiana; brother, Roland and Lynn Bowen, of San
Ramon, California; brother, Calvin and Brenda Bowen, of Soldotna,
Alaska; brother-in-law and his wife, Ralph and Linda Hall of Franklin,
NC; brother-in-law, Ivan and Reba Hall; brother-in-law, Tommy and
Jill Hall; sister-in-law, Margaret and Gary Sutton; brother-in-law,
J.R. Bishop; He was especially proud of his grandchildren: Cpl.
Jaryd (USMC) and Emily Blackwell, Jason Blackwell, Jackson Blackwell,
Meagan Honea, and Chadwick Honea, all of Cumming, Georgia.

plumber for the Local #9 Plumbers and Steamfitters Union. He was
a small aircraft pilot and he loved hunting, fishing and boating.

at Space Maker Storage. She was a member of the Jehovah Witness
Church.

to her husband, Betty is survived by two daughters, Sharon Coffman
of Sanford, FL and Melissa Chance of Deltona, FL; four sons, Teddie
Skaggs of Lake City, FL, Robert Skaggs of Brooksville, FL, James
Skaggs of Deltona, FL and Dwain Surmiak of North Carolina; one sister,

Friday, December 3, 2010 at his residence. He was a lifelong resident
of Macon County, the son of the late John H. and Selma McClure Bradley.
He was a US Navy Veteran during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was
retired from Duke Energy as a meter reader and was a member of Clarks
Chapel United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Franklin
VFW. George was a loving husband and father. He loved mechanic work,
restoring cars and trucks and making knives. He loved his friends
gathering at his Busted Knuckles Garage.
He is survived
by his wife, Rosanne Cabe Bradley; one son, Jeff Bradley of Ft.
Walton Beach, FL; one brother, Andy Bradley of Commerce, GA. Several
nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by three
brothers, Otis Bradley, Hoyt Bradley and Michael Bradley.

Franklin, NC passed away Sunday, July 27, 2008 at a local hospital.
He was born in Cheyenne, WY, the sonof the late Jay Luther and Evelyn
Thayer Bradley. He was a Veteran of the US Army serving in WWII
and the Korean War. He worked as a telephone contractor and was
a member of Hickory Knoll United Methodist Church. He was a lifetime
member of the VFW Post #7339 and American Legion Post #108. He was
a member of the Funeral detail and a member of the Telephone Pioneers
of America.
He
is survived by his wife of 62 years, Helene Therese Furneaux Bradley;
one son, Charles Luther Bradley and his wife Bonnie of Live Oak,
FL; one sister, Evelyn Hughey of Tampa, FL. A number of nieces and
nephews also survive.

Colbert Henson of Franklin, NC and a daughter-in-law, Sue Hooper
Bradley of Franklin, NC and a number of nieces and nephews along
with friends that she loved very much.
She
was preceded in death by one son, Hugh R. Bradley; two sisters,
Winifred Littleton and Adelaide Chastain and four brothers, Sherrill
Henson, Elmas Henson, John Henson, and Cleveland Henson.

wife, Mary P. of Franklin, NC; one sister, Bedell Crawford of Franklin,
NC; granddaughter, Rebecca Pruitt and her husband Rev. C. Allen

- Harold Franklin Brammer, 84, of Highlands peacefully passed away
Friday, December 16, 2011 at home with his family present. He was
born in Mullens, West Virginia, the son of Trevor Franklin Brammer
and Hallie Beckelheimer Brammer. He was a US Navy Veteran of World
War II and a graduate of Concord University. He and his wife moved
to the Highlands area in 1979 where they lived on King Mountain
for 20 years and later in Highlands proper. He co-owned and developed
Wright Square and other properties in the area. He was an active
member of First Presbyterian Church of Highlands where he served
as an Elder; he was also in the Mens Prayer Group and enjoyed
participating in missions. He was always involved in charity work
in every community in which he lived. Before moving to Highlands,
the Brammers lived in Largo, Florida where they were active members
of Christ Presbyterian Church, participating in youth activities
and teaching. Mr. Brammer also served with the Sertoma Club, a charitable
business organization. He was founder and president of Seminole
Awning and Screening Company in Pinellas County, Florida and a member
of the Florida Mobile Home Association as well as the Largo Chamber
of Commerce.
He is survived
by his wife of 62 years, Gwendolyn Austin Brammer; two daughters,
Karen Brammer Austin of Los Angeles, CA and Leah Gwen Brammer Long
and her husband Ron Long of Portola Valley, CA; a son, Harold Austin
Brammer and his wife Christel Brammer of Largo, FL; three grandchildren,
Brendan Brammer Long, Bria Lorelle Long, and Olivia Grace Austin.
Memorial services
will be held Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at 11:00 am at the First
Presbyterian Church of Highlands, with the Rev. Dr. Lee Bowman officiating.
Visitation will follow the service at the Church.

Lionel Brendle all of Franklin, NC; two sisters, Ethel Osborne of
Bryson City, NC and Wanda Ball of Franklin, NC; two brothers, Edward
Brendle of Almond, NC and Dockie Brendle of Bryson City, NC. Three
grandchildren, Kayla Alyse Brendle, Talyah Belzie Brendle and Sarah
Carpenter, also survive. He was preceded in death by a sister, Vivian
Cody and a brother, Fonzie Brendle.
Memorial service
will be held Friday, May 27, 2011 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Bryant
Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Ricky Potts and Rev. Tim Hayes officiating.
Junaluska Masonic Lodge #145 will conduct Masonic rites. The family

G. Brendle, 81 of Franklin passed away Saturday, October 2 at his
residence. He was a native of Macon County and the son of the late
Lawrence G. Brendle Sr., Nell Rickman Brendle and Raymond Sanders,
step-father. He was married for 57 years to Evelyn Ray Brendle.
He was a member of Prentiss Baptist Church. After graduating from
Franklin High School he served in the US Air Force for two years..
He was a salesman for Slacks Auto Parts, Auto Parts and Equipment
Company and part owner and salesman for Motor Parts and Equipment
Company. He worked ar Belden Electric Cord Products and was a salesman
for McClure-Dills Tractor Co. of Clyde. NC. Lawrence was an avid
gardener and was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He was a member of American Legion Post 108.
In addition
to his wife he is survived by three daughters, Teresa Hall and her
husband Ralph of Greensboro, June Hodgin and husband Jack and Jean
Poindexter and husband Carroll both of Franklin. Seven grandchildren,
Christopher Cheek, Matthew Green, Mark Green, Andrew Hall, Darrell
Hodgin,Kecia Hursey and Justin Poindexter and fourteen great-grandchildren
also survive. He was preceded in death by two grandsons, Jacob and
Daniel Hall.
Funeral services
will be held at 2:00 PM Monday October 4, 2010 in the Chapel of
Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with the Rev. Lloyd Fish officiating.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Burial will be held at Prentiss
Baptist Church Cemetery
The family will

- Margaret Cochran Brendle, age 71, of Franklin, NC passed away
Sunday, October 28, 2012. Born in Swain County, she was the daughter
of the late Walter and Minnie Ledford Cochran. She was married to
the late Stan Brendle who died May 23, 2011. Mrs. Brendle owned
and operated the Pizza Peddler Restaurant, along with her husband
Stan, for 31 years. She was a loving mother and grandmother and
she loved cooking, playing softball, crossword puzzles, bingo and
playing cards.
Mrs. Brendle
is survived by three sons, Dale Brendle of Memphis, TN, Butch Brendle
and wife Sandra and Stacy Lionel Brendle all of Franklin, NC; four
sisters, Linda Owenby of Franklin, NC, Jane Cochran, Dalphene Wilson
and Jean Remke all of Bryson City, NC; two brothers, Wayne Cochran
of Bryson City, NC and Bud Cochran of Murphy, NC and three grandchildren,
Kayla Alyse Brendle, Sarah Carpenter and Talyah Belzie Brendle.
She was preceded in death by four sisters, Ruby Russell, Faye Barker,
Hazel Simons and Lexie Hampton and one brother, Johnny Cochran.
A memorial service
will be held Thursday, November 1, 2012 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel
of Bryant Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Ricky Potts, Rev. Tim Hayes

- William Martin Brennan passed away at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital
on December 18, 2011, born in Coral Gables, Florida, on June 24,
1933. He was a member of Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church.
He served in the United States Coast Guard. After retiring from
Gables Engineering in Coral Gables where he was an associate engineer
and moving to Highlands in 1994, he could fix almost anything you
put before him.
He is survived
by his wife of 46 years, Gail, daughter Kimberly, grandson Billy
of Highlands, son Michael Brennan, wife Amy of Saxapahaw, NC, daughter

NC - Juanita Gusta Bryson Brewer, age 75, of Edward Fowler Road,
Cashiers, NC passed away Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at a Highlands-Cashiers
Hospital. She was born in Jackson County, NC and the daughter of
the late Walter "Walt" A. and Sally Underwood Bryson.
She was a retired Supervisor for the AT & T Telephone Company
and was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy at Penrose, NC.
Juanita loved quilting, loved trees and planting flowers. She loved
going to Church and meeting new people and loved to travel. She
also enjoyed poems written by her husband, Gary.
She
is survived by her husband, Gary Brewer; a step-son, Rich Brewer
of Hendersonville, NC; three sisters, Chole Bevil of Asheville,
NC, Mamie Peeler of Franklin, NC and Geneva Hooper of Cullowhee,
NC; one brother, Hayes Bryson of Cashiers, NC. Six nieces and eight
nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by a sister, Emma
Villella and two brothers, Ralph and Herbert C. Bryson.
Funeral
services will be held Friday, December 11 at 11:00 AM at Pine Creek
Baptist Church with Rev. Johnny Norris officiating. Burial will

Friday, July 17, 2009 in a local nursing home. He was a native of
Swain County, the son of the late J. A. Brogden and Faye Hupp Brogden.
Mr. Brogden was a member of Cowee Baptist Church for 61 years, where
he served as a Choir Member. He was a US Army Veteran of World War
II, serving with the Military Police. He was a retired Barber, owning
Macon Barber Shop for thirty years, he also owned and operated Caler
Creek Ruby Mine for twenty years. He loved coon hunting and playing
golf, he was a member of Macon Co. Coon Hunters Association and
a member of Junaluska Masonic Lodge #145.
He
is survived by his wife of 61 years, Zena Pearl Rickman Brogden;
two sons, Rick Brogden and his wife Anne and Mack Brogden and his
wife Linda all of Franklin, NC; five grandchildren, Chris Brogden,
Lorrie Contino, Ericka Brogden, Dustin Brogden, and Joe Brogden;
four great-granchildren, Kendall, Caitlin, Abby, and Heidi Brogden
and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by five
sisters, six brothers.
Funeral
services will be held Sunday, July 19th at 3:30pm at Cowee Baptist
Church, with Rev. David Powell and Rev. Lloyd Fish, Jr. officiating.

He retired from GMAC as a District Sales Manager after 30 years
of employment.
He

of Phenix City, AL, and Teresa Bridges of Franklin, NC. Grandson,

Jiene Brinkley

NC - Gloria
Jiene Brinkley, a Jacksonville native and only child of Winton and
Margaret Brinkley, passed from this life into her new life in heaven
with her Lord on January 1, 2011 following a brief illness in Franklin,
NC. She was 83 years young.
As
an only child, Gloria prayed for a little brother. Her prayers were
answered when her parents took into their home a cousin, Speedy,
who lived with the family during the Depression.
After
graduating from Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, FL she
earned a B.S. Degree in Business and Secretarial Studies from Stetson
University. She taught in a private girls college in Illinois
for three years before returning to Jacksonville to be near her
ailing parents. After earning her Masters Degree from Presbyterian
School of Christian Education which is now affiliated with Union
Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, Virginia she taught at Florida
Community College at Jacksonville, now Florida State College at
Jacksonville, until her retirement in 1988. Following her retirement,
Gloria Jiene bought a home in her beloved Otto, NC and became active
in the Franklin community.
While
living in Jacksonville, Gloria Jiene was an active member and ordained
Elder at Lakeshore Presbyterian Church. While in NC she has been
an active member of First Presbyterian Church. Her hobbies included
counted cross stitich and reading.
Gloria
Jiene Brinkley leaves to mourn her passing her five cousins and
a large host of friends. A memorial service in witness to her resurrection
will take place at the First Presbyterian Church in Franklin, NC
on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at 2 PM. A reception will follow the
service in Tartan Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made

NC - James Wendell Brookshire of Annandale, Virginia, Nags Head,
North Carolina and Maui, Hawaii, passed away at INOVA Alexandria
Hospital on March 24, 2008, at the age of 82.
Visitation

on Saturday, April 5th at 10:00 AM, with funeral services following
at 11:00 AM. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery with military
honors.
He
is survived by his wife, Joan Potts Brookshire, daughters Saundra
Brookshire and husband Anthony Pagan of Nags Head, North Carolina
and Alisa Brookshire and husband, Leo Snead of Richmond, Virginia;
grandchildren, Morgan Myshin of South Lake Tahoe, California, Logan
Snead and Makenzie Snead of Richmond, Virginia.
He
was preceded in death by his brothers, Clinton, Hoyt, and Harold
Brookshire, and by his sister Lucille Ramey. He is survived by his
youngest brother, Dennis Brookshire and three sisters, Virginia
Smith, Barbara Kelley and Ivy Underhill, in addition to 15 nieces
and nephews.
Mr.
Brookshire, like many patriotic young men during World War II, left
Franklin High School to join the U.S. Navy. He was chosen to be
part of a very elite group who plied the waters of the Pacific on
the USS Spearfish (SS-190). Although he never talked about it, he
even found time while in the U.S Navy to become a Golden Gloves
boxer of the submarine fleet.
Upon
his return from the military, he graduated from Western Carolina
University. He taught school in Fairfax County Public schools for
several years before becoming a builder of fine homes in Northern
Virginia. He, his wife, children and grandchildren spent many hours
together at the beaches in Nags Head, NC and Maui, Hawaii. They
traveled extensively throughout the world.

December 8, 1988. She was a homemaker and a member of Prentiss Church
of God. She was a member of the Safe Club, former President to the
Ladies Ministry and was coordinator for showers and dinners at the
Church. She loved quilting, crocheting and sewing.
She
is survived by three daughters, Jeanette Conner and her husband,
Ray of Dillard, GA, Jackie Lovell and her husband Kenneth of Tiger,
GA, and Julia Wood and her husband, James of Otto, NC; three sisters,
Esther Hill of Clayton, GA, Naomi Johnston of Candler, NC and Loretta
Norris of Scaly Mtn., NC; one brother, James Miller of Scaly Mtn.,
NC. Four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren also survive.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, brother and sisters,

Franklin, NC passed away Thursday, July 1, 2010 in a local hospital.
Born in Fulton County, GA she was the daughter of the late John
Henry Clark, Sr. and Florida Chambers Clark. She was married to
the late Robert Brown. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist
faith. She is survived by one sister Mallie Fincher of Ocala, FL
and one brother Frank Clark of Bowman, GA. Several nieces and nephews
also survive.
The

NC - Carter Norman Brunk, age 81, of Franklin, NC, passed away Sunday,
January 13, 2008 in an Asheville hospital. He was born in Cook County,
Illinois, the son of the late Carter and Thelma Dickinson Brunk.
He was a US Air Force Major, and a World War II Veteran, serving
in strategic Air Command until he retired. He was married to the
late Valeria "Penny" Smithey Brunk.
He
is surivived by one daughter, Kelli Brunk of Miami, FL; two sons,
Charles "Butch" Parks of Cheyenne, Wyoming and Shawn H.
Brunk of Miami, FL; one sister, Lorraine of California; eight grandchildren,
Carter, Tommy, Sam, Audrey, Carlos Carter, Shawn Erik, Mollie Valeria,
and Tien Eng Brunk; the Barth-Brunk family of Illinois and Wisconsin;
brother-in-law, Lloyd and Earlene Smithey of Severna Park, Maryland
and their two daughters. He
was preceded in death by his loved wife, "Penny," and
his brother, Richard.

NC - Marvin Dewitt Bryant, age 85, of Upper Burningtown Road, Franklin,
NC passed away Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at a local nursing home. He
was a lifelong native of Macon County, the son of the late Mark
and Lucinda Poindexter Bryant. He was a Veteran of the US Army during
WWII and the Korean Conflict where he was a Purple Heart recipient.
He was retired from the Department of Transportation and was a member
of Oak Dale Baptist Church. Dewitt loved coon hunting and walking
in the woods.
He
is survived by his wife of 44 years, Lillie Roper Bryant of Franklin,
NC; two step-sons, Bill Higdon and his wife, Linda and Paul Higdon
and his wife Linda of Franklin, NC; son-in-law, Eddie Raby of Franklin,
NC, sisters, Margaret Roper and Dorothy Crawford of Franklin, NC
and Rosemary McPhatter of Charlotte, NC; one brother, D.L. Bryant
of Spray, OR; four step-grandchildren, Christa Ledford and husband,
Bobby, Heather Gibson and husband Michael. Justin and Lauren Higdon;
five step-great-grandchildren, Mallie and Sarah Ledford, Clay, Blake,
and Lexy Gibson. He was preceded in death by a step-daughter, Betty
Ann Raby; sisters, Elva Bryant, Burdell Hembree, Verdna Mae Rowland,
Elizabeth Bryant; a brother, Wayne Bryant.

services will be held Thursday, April 8, at 2:00PM in the Chapel
of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Guy Duvall and Rev. John
Raby officiating. Burial will be at the Roper Family Cemetery. David

- Charles
"Chick" Harris Bryson, 91 of 30 Pressley Road, died Saturday
at the Charles George Veterans Community Living Center in
Asheville, North Carolina.
A
native of Macon County, he was the eleventh surviving child of Earvin
Felix and Paralee Brooks Bryson. He was preceded in death by three
sons, Samuel Ted Ledford, Harrison Eugene Bryson and Charles "Tommy"
Bryson.
He
leaves to survive, his wife Mildred Bryson, daughters Yvonne Bryson
of Franklin, NC and Bobbie Bryson of Crofton, MD, one son Bert Bryson
of Canton, NC, grandchildren Kimberly of Charlotte, NC, Jada and
Norman Bryson of Franklin, three great-grandchildren, a half-sister
Ann Burgess Hall of Franklin, and a host of nieces and nephews.
He
was a Private First Class in the United States Armys 92nd
Division. Private Bryson served his country in Italy. His tour of
duty was from 1942-1945.
Many
years were worked at Cunningham Feed Store, Burlington Industries
Hosiery Mill, Burlington Industries Rabun Plant and the U. S. Forest
Service Older American Program.
He
was a long time member at St. Cyprians Episcopal Church where
he served on the Vestry Board as Senior and Junior Warden. He attended
Burgess Chapel and was a faithful member of the church choir "The
Joy Bells". Currently, he was attending church at Liberty Baptist
Church in Sylva, NC where he was a member of the Mens Choir
and Holy Tabernacle also in Sylva, NC.
He
was known through out the county for his love of singing, dancing
and walnuts.
In
October 2009, Chick was priviledged to participate in the Honor
Air trip to Washington, DC to visit the World War II memorial. In
January 2010, The Macon County Human Relations Council awarded Chick
the Outstanding Honoree Award for being the sole surviving African
American World War II veteran in Macon County.
Funeral
services will be held Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at 1:00 pm in the
Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Cyprians
Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Tuesday,
July 20, 2010 at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home. Memorials may be made
to The Waynesville Corps of The Salvation Army, 290 Pigeon St.,

Neville Bryson, age 85, of Highlands, NC, passed away Wednesday,
July 7, 2010 at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital. He was a native of
Macon County, the son of the late Walter Allen Bryson and Ruth Young
Bryson. He was a US Army Veteran of World War II. He began business
in 1951. He was a farmer, owner of Bryson Grading and Trucking since
1985, owner of B & S Haulers since 1997, and operator of Hickory
Flats Farm since 1961, which he dearly loved, and owner of Brysons
Gulf Service for 34 years. He was a member of Highlands United Methodist
Church, and a member of the Macon County Planning Board. He was
the first President of the Highlands Lions Club, a former member
of the Board of Commissioners in Highlands, former member of Macon
County Board of Education and Macon County Board of Commissioners.
He loved Highlands, his family and his Church. In addition to his
parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Walter N. Bryson, Jr.,
and a brother, William Y. Bryson.
He
is survived by his wife of 64 years, Edna Phillips Bryson; two sons,
James P. Bryson and wife Sheila and J. Michael Bryson and wife Becki
T. all of Highlands, NC; a daughter-in-law, Margaret Bryson; a sister,
Mozelle Postell of Robbinsville, NC, five grandchildren, Josh (Mandi),
Jennifer (Brian), Ryan, Jaime, and Maegan.
Funeral
services will be held Saturday, July 10, 2010 at 11:00am at Highlands
United Methodist Church, with Rev. Paul Christy officiating. Burial
will be at Highlands Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be
Jimmy Robins, Willard Turpin, Clarence Carpenter, Fred Bowers, Joe
Luke and Jim Luke. Honorary pallbearers will be Walter Wilson, Gene

served as a cook. He loved fishing, gardening and working in his
flower garden.

of Atlanta, GA and his son, Bruce Bryson and his wife Sue of Franklin,
NC; one sister, Otela Bryson of Asheville, NC; four grandchildren,
Sheri Dockery, Barry Bryson, Marna Peck, and Marcie Carpenter. Seventeen
great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by a
great-grandson and four brothers, Sammie, Vernon, Alton, and Mack
Bryson.

to be with his Lord after a courageous battle with cancer, Wednesday,

wife, Elizabeth Wright Buck. He was assistant manager of the Highlands
ABC store. David was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Highlands
and was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

home; three daughthers, Mary Beth Buck of Highlands, NC, Bailey
McBride Buck of the home and Katina Kenton of Wyoming; and one sister,
Diane Correll of Orlando, FL. Five grandchildren also survive including
Allie and Jonathan David.

her illness. She liked to sew and do embroidering. She also enjoyed
camping and loved her family.

away Sunday, June 22, 2008 at a Sylva Hospital. He was a native
and lifelong resident of Macon County, the son of the late Annie
Mae Scruggs Burgess and Wade Burgess, Sr. He worked for the town
of Franklin for 15 years. John was a faithful member of Burgess
Chapel Church of God and was a friend to everyone he met along the
way.
He
is survived by his sister, Bea Chavis and her husband, Fleetwood
of Franklin, NC. Several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and
great-nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by a sister,
Carrie Mae Stevenson and two brothers, Wade " Rabbit"
Burgess, Jr and Don Burgess.
Funeral
services will be held Friday, June 27 at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of
Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Elder C.W. Johnson officiating. Burial
will be at Woodlawn Cemetery. Timothy Chavis, Willis Chavis, Michael
Chavis, Greg Hall, Alex Hall, and Danny Breedlove will serve as
pallbearers.
The
family will receive friends Thursday, June 26 from 6:00-8:00PM at
Bryant-Grant Funeral Home.

Pat Burgess
Franklin, NC
- Pat Burgess, 49 of Roller Mill Rd., passed away Friday, July 23,
2010 in a local hospital. A native of Macon County he was the son
of Charles and Ann Burgess Hall. He was a retired street foreman
with the Town of Franklin. A member of Burgess Chapel Church of
God in Christ, he loved to hunt and fish, loved drag racing and
going to car shows. A 1980 graduate of Franklin High School he was
a member of FFA.
In addition
to his parents he is survived by one son Patrick Isaiah Burgess
of Franklin, NC; Mother of his son Beth Burgess of Franklin, NC,
one step-daughter Thia Heater Foster of Clayton, GA, two step-sons
Justin Heater of Asheville, NC and Jeremiah Gribble of Franklin,
NC. He is also survived by his maternal grandmother Josephine Burgess
of Franklin; three sisters Charlene Hall, Christine Hall and Leslie
Hall all of Franklin, NC; two brothers Chris Hall of Franklin, NC
and Alex Hall of Waynesville, NC and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services
will be held Monday, July 26, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of
Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. J. W. Gary and Supt. C. W. Johnson
officiating. Pallbearers will be Clarence Cullins, Greg Hall, John
Pressley, Michael Chavis, Justin Heater, Jeremiah Gribble, Willis
Chavis and Tim Chavis. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. The
family will receive friends Sunday, July 25, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00
p.m. at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations

Burnette
Highlands -
Francis Juanita Burnette, 76, of the Yellow Mountain Community passed
away Saturday, March 17, 2012 in Highlands. She was a native of
Macon County; the daughter of the late Eugene and Mary Houston Wood.
She was married to C. T. Burnette for over 61 years. She was a member
of Yellow Mountain Baptist Church and was a choir member. Mrs. Burnette
was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She
loved to bowl, crochet and read. She loved her church family, cooking
for family, friends and her church family.
In addition
to her husband she is survived by a son, Tommy Burnette and wife
Nancy of Glenville, NC; one sister, Jeannie Taylor of Otto, NC;
two brothers, Vic Wood and wife Betty of Highlands, NC and Larry
Wood and wife Leann of Manassas, VA. Two grandchildren, Jeffery
and Kristy Burnette; three great-grandchildren, Jeffery, Bradley
and Christopher Burnette, and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Services will
be held Saturday, March 24, 2012 at 3:00 PM at Yellow Mountain Baptist
Church with Rev. Keith Ashe, Rev. Johnny Norris and Rev. Ralph Campbell
officiating. Burial will be in the Stewart Cemetery. The family
will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church.

Elizabeth Carpenter Burrell, age 83, of Prentiss Bridge Road, Franklin,
NC, passed away Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at her residence. She
was a native of Macon County, the daughter of the late William Harley
Carpenter and Louisa Jane Norton Carpenter. She was a homemaker
and had worked at Clayburn Manufacturing. She was a member of Newman
Chapel Baptist Church, and volunteered in the Church Fellowship
Hall. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother,
she enjoyed singing and visiting at Britthaven. She was an avid
Atlanta Braves Fan.
She
is survived by her husband of 65 years, R. L. Burrell; a daughter,
Linda Sue Brooks of Franklin, NC; two sons, James Burrell of Franklin,
NC and Kevin Burrell and wife Patricia of Franklin, NC; two brothers,
Edward Carpenter of Otto, NC and Harley Carpenter, Jr. of Franklin,
NC; four grandchildren, Todd Burrell, Stephanie Robbins, Tricia
Carver, and Daniel Brooks; two great-grandchildren, Daylon Ammons
and Gavyn Carver. She was preceded in death by one sister, and three
brothers.
Funeral
services will be held Saturday, August 7, 2010 at 11:00 am at Newman
Chapel Baptist Church, with Rev. Alton Dendy and Rev. Danny Cannon
officiating. Pallbearers will be Tommy Carpenter, David Pitts, Glenn
Pitts, Caleb Tallent, Michael McDowell and Jeff Carpenter. Honorary
pallbearers will be Mike Welch, Jerry Rogers, Erskin Monteith, Tommy
McMahan, Billy Carpenter and Eugene Pitts. Burial will be in the
Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00
pm, Friday evening at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home, where the body
will remain until placed in the Church thirty minutes prior to the
service.

Franklin
-E leanor Burstein, 86 was born on July 11, 1924. The wife of Oscar
Burstein, daughter of Samuel & Yetta Sacks and the sister of
Lillian and brother, Alex, all of blessed memory. On March 8, 2011,
she passed away, survived by her adoring sons: Barry, Randy &
Maury. Loving daughters-in-law. Patricia, Melissa & Ivy. Admiring
grandchildren: Jennifer, Alan, Matthew, Lori, Jonathon, Connie,
Michael, Jeffrey, Josh, Roseli & Brandon. Beautiful great-grandchildren:
Shaun, Isabel, Zachery, Jocelyn & Addison. Nephews & Nieces:

Eleanor
was born in Brooklyn, New York where she spent the first years of
her life. Her family moved to South Florida where she met and fell
in love with Oscar, the man who stole her heart. She raised a beautiful
family and stood hand in hand with Oscar for a fulfilling 52 years.
Eleanor
will be interred at Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery in Franklin, NC.

Dorn Buzzell
Groton
MA / Highlands - Louise Dorn Buzzell, 94, passed away Friday evening
March 6 at the Groton, MA home of her eldest son, Robert Buzzell.
She was born February 22, 1915 in Larkins (now known as South Miami)
Florida, the eldest child of Robert William Dorn, Sr. and his wife
Mary Irene ( Wheeler) Dorn who were early pioneers of South Florida.
Mrs.
Buzzell graduated salutatorian in the Class of 1936, University
of Miami where she was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority.
She married her high school sweetheart, A.L.Buzzell at the Plymouth
Congregational Church in Coconut grove, FL. He predeceased her in
2002, shortly after their 65th wedding anniversary celebration in
Jacksonville, FL
She
is survived by five sons; Robert L. Buzzell of Groton, MA, Edward
P. Buzzell of Kenmore, WA, Stephen A. Buzzell of Tavernier, FL.,
Donald A, Buzzell of Annandale, VA, William A. Buzzell of Lake Mary,
FL and a sister, Martha A. Timanus of Miami, FL.
She
is also survived by 16 grandchildren: Ward Buzzell, Elizabeth Buzzell,
Amy Cook, Diane Buzzell, Shawn Evans, Mary Lewis, Shannon Normington,
Rob Buzzell, Brad Buzzell, Brian Buzzell, Mara Ehert, Steve Buzzell,
Laura McElhinney, Meredith Stevens, Leah Buzzell, Anna Buzzell,
and 17 great grandchildren.
Services
were held on Saturday, March 14, 2009 at 1:00 PM in the Bryant-Grant
Funeral Home Chapel in Highlands, NC. She summered in Highlands
with her family for many years and she will be buried in the Highlands
Memorial Cemetery, next to her husband.

Byrd
Franklin, NC - Mary Strain Byrd, age 97, of Franklin, NC, passed
away Thursday, May 21, 2009, in a local nursing home. She was born
in Baldwin, GA, the daughter of the late Floyd and Norma Stewart
Strain. She was married to the late Clint Byrd. She was a graduate
of Franklin High School and Western Carolina Teachers College. She
taught school 36 years in Macon County, teaching at Kyle, Holly
Springs, Clarks Chapel, Mulberry and Otto until her retirement in
1975. She was a member and past President of Macon County Retired
School Personnel, and past President of Macon County NCAE. She was
the oldest member of First Presbyterian Church, and a member of
Ruth Circle.
She
is survived by her daughter, Mary Ruth Byrd of Franklin, NC; a brother-in-law,
Thad Byrd and his wife Laura of Franklin, NC, several nieces and
nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her son, Scott
Byrd, her two sisters, Flora Richardson and Harriett Phillips and
her two brothers, Irvin Strain and Robert Strain.
Funeral
services will be held Sunday, May 24, 2009 at 3:00pm at First Presbyterian
Church, with Rev. Bob Abel officiating. Burial will be at Woodlawn
Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John Phillips, Paul Phillips, Joe
Phillips, Jerry Fulbright, David Woods, and Brian Stram. Honorary
pallbearers will be members of Ruth Circle and members of Macon
County Retired School Personnel.
The
family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00pm Saturday evening
at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home, where the body will remain until placed
