Thelma M. Gaff

Franklin, NC - Thelma M. Garrison Gaff, 86, of the Holly Springs Community, formerly of Homestead, FL passed away peacefully on February, 29, 2008 while surrounded by her family. She was born in Fitzgerald, GA, the daughter of the late Wiley and Suzanna Williams Garrison. She had worked at Minor's Market in Homestead, FL for the past 37 years. She had attended Redland Church of the Nazarene in Homestead, and Holly Springs Baptist Church in Franklin.

She is survived by three daughters; Voncile Brannan and husband Harold of Franklin; Katherine Carney and husband Billy of Toomsaba, MS; and Brenda Grady of Ocala, FL; one sister, Peggy Luke and husband Phil of Fitzgerald, GA; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was precedeed in death by her husband Woodrow "Woody" Gaff and son, Rick J. Gaff.

There will be no services in Franklin. A memorial service will held at Redland Church of The Nazarene, April 5 at 11:00 AM in Homestead, FL. with Rev. Darin Pound officiating. Bryant-Grant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

 

 

Philip Rice Garrett

Frankllin, NC - Philip Rice Garrett, age 84, of Old Mill Creek Road, Franklin, NC passed away Monday, November 3, 2008 at a local nursing home. He was born in Irvine, KY, the son of the late McKinley and Anna Jane Rice Garrett. He was retired from sales and service for a building supply company, in Orlando, FL. He was a US Navy Veteran serving during World War II and the Korean War, and was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Phyllis Jean Folsom Garrett; one daughter, Cherie D. Eicher and her husband Dave of Chiefland, FL and one son, Stephen H. Garrett and his wife Rita of Gainesville, FL; two brothers, Larry M. Garrett of Irving, KY and Dale W. Garrett of Garland, TX; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby G. Garrett.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, November 15th at 2:00pm at Memorial United Methodist Church, with Rev. Keith Newell officiating. The Franklin VFW Post #7339 and American Legion Post #108 will conduct military rites. The family will receive friends after the service at the Church. Memorials may be made to a Charity of one’s choice.

Ruth Eva Keener Garland

Highlands, NC - Ruth Eva Keener Garland, age 98, of Highlands, NC passed away Wednesday, October 28, 2009 in a Clayton, GA hospital. She was born in Rabun Co., GA, the daughter of the late Emory and Huldah Holbrook Keener. She was a homemaker and a member of the Highlands United Methodist Church where she was a member of the United Methodist Women’s Association. She is survived by two daughters, Rebecca Cragg of Coppers Cove, TX and Mary Garland Newton of Pendleton, SC; two sons, Dean Garland of Seneca, SC and Willard Garland of Highlands, NC. Seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mattie Cabe and three brothers, Lee Keener, Will Keener and George Keener.

Memorial services will be held Sunday, November 1, at 2:00 PM at Highlands First United Methodist Church with Rev. Paul Christy officiating. The family will receive friends after the service.

Thomas Rudolph Gee

Franklin, NC - Thomas Rudolph Gee 83 of the Clarks Chapel Community died Friday May 28, 2010 at his residence. He was a native of Vero Beach , FL, the son of the late Arthur Clair, and Julia Stanland Gee. He was a supervisor for Florida Power company. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force, he served in WWII, he was a member of the LST association ship # 723 organization, and a member of Watuga Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years Dorothy June Worrell Gee of Franklin, NC. One daughter Karen Elaine Handwerker and husband Thomas Samuel Handwerker of Salisbury, Maryland. Three sisters Joyce Miriam Dixon of Lakeland, Florida, Winona Elizabeth Gribble of Gainesville Florida, and Bettye Carolyn Lewis of St. Petersburg Florida. Three Brothers Harry Gee, Donald Gee, and A.C Gee. Three Grandchildren Thomas Eugene Handwerker, Kasey Niccole Handwerker, and Kelcie Michelle Handwerker.

Graveside services will be held Monday May 31st at 3 p.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery with Rev. Wesley Price and Rev. John Hartley officiating. Pallbearers will be Bobby Gibson, J.D Gibson, Roger Bishop, Caleb Gibson, Alvin Johnson, and Blaine Keener. Honorary Pallbearers will be Donald Gee, Harry Gee, and A.C Gee, and Thomas Eugene Handwerker. Military grave side services will be conducted by the funeral detail of the Franklin VFW Post #7339 and American Legion Post #0108.

Joseph Allen Geoghagan

Highlands, NC - Joseph Allen Geoghagan, age 66, of West Cypress Lane, Highlands, NC passed away Thursday, April 30, 2009 at his residence. He was born in Stephens County, GA, the son of the late James Lamar and Myrtle Sapp Geoghagan. He was a welder and was of the Methodist faith. He was Pit Master for Blue Valley BBQ Competition Cooking Team. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and racing. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, uncle and friend.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years Judy Bennett Geoghagan; two sons, Clinton Geoghagan and his wife Geanine of Martin, GA and Michael Geoghagan and his wife, Kristi of Franklin, NC; three grandchildren, Seth Masten, Bryson Geoghagan and Elijah Geoghagan. One sister also survives. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bo Geoghagan.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, May 2 at 6:00 PM in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home in Highlands with the Rev. Luis Ortiz officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 4:00-6:00PM, two hours prior to the service.

Mark Gibson

Franklin- Mark Gibson 57 of the Mashburn Branch Community died Saturday May 29, 2010 in an Asheville, NC Hospital. He was a native of Macon County the son of the late Lewis (Pete) and Helen Angel Gibson he was a care taker, he graduated from Franklin High School Class of 1971. He enjoyed NASCAR Racing, woodworking, raising cactus plants, and collecting heavy equipment models. He was a member of Mashburn Branch Baptist Church.

He is survived by two Aunts, Ruth Griffin of Franklin, NC and Rosa Lee Gibson of Waynesville, NC and several cousins.

Funeral Services will be Tuesday June 1st at 1 p.m. at the chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with the Rev. Alton Dendy officiating. Pallbearers will be Gene Angel, Issac Gibson, Jody Spradlin, Jim Graham, Mike Mincey, and J.D. Gibson. Burial will be at Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 12 p.m. till 1 p.m. one hour prior to the service.

Lula Kate Gibson

Franklin, NC - Lula Kate Gibson, age 94, of Granny Kate Lane, Franklin, NC passed away Monday, May 25, 2009 at a local care center. She was a lifelong resident of Macon County, the daughter of the late Samuel and Nannie Sellers Green. She was married to J.D. Gibson who passed away in 1961. She was a sales clerk having worked for the 5 & 10 cent store, Bowers Department Store and the Army Store. She worked for the Job Corp for over ten years. She was a member of Louisa Chapel United Methodist Church where she served as a choir member. Kate loved to fish.

She is survived by her daughter, Audrey Ledbetter and her husband, Max of Franklin, NC; her son,, Dan Gibson and his wife, Edna, Eight grandsons, fifteen great-grantchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mavis Bates, three sons, Robbie Gibson, L.T. Gibson, Carroll Gibson; six sisters, Rittie Waldroop, Laura Waldroop, Anna Henson, Gwendolyn Reese, Beatrice Wallace, Genevive Johnson; three brothers, Hamilton Green, Tim Green and Bill Green.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 27 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. David Crunkleton and Rev. Mike Bias officiating. Burial will be held at Carson Cemetery. Grandsons, Jay Gibson, Kent Gibson, Richie Gibson, Mike Gibson, Lee Gibson, and Matthew Gibson will serve as pallbearers.

Paul Milton "Pond" Gold, Jr

Sylva, NC - Paul Milton "Pond" Gold, Jr., age 69, of Sylva, died Sunday, March 28, 2010, at his residence following a brief illness. Services will be held at a later date.

Born August 19, 1940, in Charlotte to the late Clara Hord Gold and Paul Milton Gold Sr., he attended Myers Park High School, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Kentucky, where he earned a doctorate. After beginning his career in broadcast radio as a radio personality and in radio station management, he taught communications at Western Carolina University and Southwestern Community college.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother. Surviving are his wife, Marilyn; and one sister, Kathleen "Kathy" Gold Lee of Charlotte. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Franklin, NC - Ruth Goode, age 96, of Titusville, FL formerly of Franklin, NC passed away Sunday, February 1, 2009 inTitusville, FL. She was born in Birmingham, AL, the daughter of Rufus and Elizabeth Robertson. She was married to William Goode who passed away in 1996.

She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 8 at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Abel officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2:00-3:00 PM, one hour prior to service. Burial will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Robert Frenger Goorey, Sr.

Franklin - Robert Frenger Goorey, Sr., age 85, of Franklin, NC, passed away Sunday, January 31, 2010 in a local hospital. He was a native of Charleston, West Virginia, the son of the late Albert Samuel Goorey and Severine Virginia Frenger Goorey. He spent most of his life in Columbus, Ohio. He owned a watch and jewelry store, and it is carried on by his son Raymond. He was a US Navy Veteran of World War II and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. He was a member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, and a member of the Franklin American Legion Post 108.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Julia Russell Goorey; two daughters, Linda Van Scoten of Virginia Beach, VA, and Sheri Goorey Pappas and husband Dorian of Foothill Ranch, CA; a step-daughter, Barbara Buckner White and husband Stephen of Nashville, TN; three sons, Robert Kenneth Bishard and wife Bonnie, of Virginia Beach, VA, Robert F. Goorey, Jr., of Rock Hill, SC, and Raymond Goorey of Pasadena, CA; eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 5, 2010 at 2:00pm in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home, with the American Legion Chaplain officiating. The Franklin VFW Post #7339 and American Legion Post #108 will conduct military rites. The family will receive friends Friday from 1:00-2:00PM, one hour prior to the service at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home.

Robert "Bob" D. Graves

Otto, NC - Robert "Bob" D. Graves, age 74, of Otto, NC passed away Friday, January 11, 2008 in an Asheville Hospital. He was born in Dean County, WI, the son of the late Emerson Frank and Emily Jean Carterson Graves. He was an aircraft mechanic for the US Air Force with 20 years of service. After retirement he worked for Hampton Electronics in Hampton, VA. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Frida Henson Norton Graves; two sons, Robert Michael Graves of Hampton, VA and Frank Emerson Graves and his wife, Donna of Hampton, VA. Two grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by a son Ronald Dean Graves.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 16 at 2:00 PM at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Binger officiating. Burial will be at Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery. Dennis Henson, Randy Henson, Jamie Henson, Steve Henson, Jimmy Norton and Pat McCall will serve as pallbearers. The VFW Post # 7339 and the American Legion Post #108 will perform complete military graveside rites.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, January 16 from 1:00-2:00 PM, one hour prior to service at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home.

Windell Ray Gravitt

Franklin - Windell Ray Gravitt, age 36, of Franklin, NC passed away Thursday, February 21, 2008 in an Asheville Hospital as a result of an automobile accident. He was born in Walker County, Ga., the son of Mary Alice Headrick Gravitt of Chickamauga, GA. and the late Anthony L. Gravitt. He was a truck driver for Koster Construction.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 16 years, Angela Thomas Gravitt; his three daughters, Samantha and Kayla Gravitt of the home and Adrianna Bryant of the home; his son, Dalton Gravitt of the home; his mother and father-in-law, Dewey and Barbara Thomas and his brother-in-law, Danny Thomas; his sister, Lucy Barrett; his brothers, Darrell Gravitt and his wife, Sharon of Franklin, NC, Charles Gravitt and his wife, Wanda and Tony Gravitt and his wife Cheryl all of Chickamauga, GA and Daren Gravitt of Ft. Oglethorpe, GA.

Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Monday, February 25 at 2:30 PM in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Benny Hurst and Rev Ricky Potts officiating. Burial will be at Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery. Danny Thomas, Jr, Danny Thomas, Sr., Dalton Gravitt, Tony Gravitt, Charles Gravitt, and Charles Gravitt, Jr. will serve as pallbearers.

Rodney Gordon Grantham

Scaly Mtn., NC -Rodney Gordon Grantham, age 80 of Rocky Knob Lane, Scaly Mtn., NC passed away Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at his residence. He was born in Jamestown, NY, the son of the late Rodney Gordon Grantham, Sr and Irene Wahl Grantham. He served as a surgical scrub nurse in the US Navy during WWII and the Korean War. He had a long career as a Hydrologist specializing in ground and surface water for the US Geological Survey. He was also a musician for a number of years playing both saxaphone and clarinet. While stationed in Yokuska, Japan, during the Korean War, he began the study of Judo, eventually reaching the rank of third degree black belt. After returning to the states he began teaching judo and established several judo schools in Alabama. In 1967 he began the study of Aikido and reached the rank of sixth degree black belt.

He founded the Aikido Center of Atlanta which is the third oldest Aikido dojo on the East Coast and is still in existence having been given over to one of his students. He and his wife Janet also collected Japanese woodblock prints (ukiyo-e) and amassed a collection spanning 250 years. He became one of the few experts in the Southeast and did appraisals and identifications. They exhibited parts of their collection at Japan Fest and Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, GA and at The Bascom-Louise Gallery in Highlands, NC as well as several other places.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Janet Davids Grantham; one step-daughter, Christine Reid Shaw of Atlanta, GA; three sons, Rodney Grantham, III of Roswell, GA, Dana Grantham of Hartwell, GA and Mark Grantham of Atlanta, GA; one step-son, Steven LeConte Shaw of Silver Springs, MD. Three grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marie Grantham and a son Richard Grantham.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Atlanta, GA

Annette " Annie" Marcella Griffiths

Franklin, NC - Annette " Annie" Marcella Griffiths, age 81, of Locust, NC formerly of Franklin, NC passed away Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at her residence in Locust, NC where she resided with her grandson David and his family. She was born in New Haven, Connecticut the daughter of the late Pasquale and Jennie Ginnestra Stellato. She was married to Eugene Griffiths who passed away in 1987. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church where she served as parish council, a Lector, and an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion and was on the Board of Trustees.

She is survived by one daughter, Linda Nardelli of Mint Hill, NC; one sister, Betty Rivers of Orlando, FL and one brother, Marcelino "Mark" Stellato of North Fort Myers, FL; three grandsons, David Nardelli of Locust, NC, Tony Nardelli of Catawba, NC and Edward "Eddie" Nardelli of Mint Hill, NC; five great-grandchildren, MaKayla, Nicholas, Tori,Tony and Brock.

A memorial mass will be held Saturday, February 20 at 12:00 Noon at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Father Tien Duong officiating. A private burial will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church Youth Fund, 299 Maple Street, Franklin, NC 28734.

Phyllis " Phyl " Sue Grindstaff

Franklin, NC - Phyllis " Phyl " Sue Grindstaff , age 53, of Jacobs Branch Road, Franklin, NC, went home to heaven on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC. She was a native of Macon County, the daughter of Daphine Jones Green of Franklin and the late James Crawford Jones. She was a Pharmacist Assistant at Walmart Pharmacy, and attended Franklin Church of God. She shared her strong faith with everyone around her. She loved her family and her numerous friends very much. She was such an inspiration to everyone. She has blessed many lives. Her memories will last forever.

She is survived by one daughter, Amanda Holden and her husband Donnie of Franklin, NC; three sisters, Hazel Scott and her husband Milton of Franklin ,NC , Sue Darnell of Savannah, GA and Rachel Guthrie and her husband Richard of Franklin, NC; four brothers, Paul Shuler and his wife Ernestine, Lonnie Jones and his wife Wanda, and Jerry Jones all of Franklin, NC; and L. R. Jones of Winter Haven, FL. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 20th at 3:00pm at Franklin Church of God, with Rev. Allen Taylor, Rev. Alton Dendy and Rev. Clark Sheffield officiating. Burial will be in the Sheperd Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00pm Saturday evening at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home, where the body will remain until taken to the Church thirty minutes prior to the service.

Franklin, NC - Margaret Baldwin Guest, age 92, of Nut House Drive, Franklin, NC passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at Flat Rock, NC. She was a native of Macon County, NC the daughter of Harley E. and Allie Humphrey Baldwin. She was married to the late Jack Guest who passed away in 1977. She was a homemaker, a member of the pink ladies for 20 years at Angel Medical Center, a member of the home extension club and former president of the Democrate Women. She was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Allie Sue Ray of Tuson, Arizonia and Jewel "Frances" Hargrave and husband, Charlie of Ponca City, OK; two sons, Roger Lewis Guest of Ann Arbor, MI and James David Guest and his wife, Geri of Quincy, MI; one sister, Thelma Freeman of Weaverville, NC; two brothers, Harold Baldwin of Marietta, GA and Charles Baldwin of Texas. Fifteen grandchildren, twenty-nine great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survives. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys Evanson and Olatta Wells and one brother, Howard Baldwin.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 26 at 10:00 AM at Holly Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Eddie Trull, Rev. Judson Hall and Rev. Lewis Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends Friday, July 25 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home where the body will remain until placed in the Church thirty minutes prior to service.

Robert Benjamin Guffey

Franklin, NC - Robert Benjamin Guffey, age 95, of Franklin, NC, passed away Friday, April 4, 2008 at his residence. He was a native of Macon County, the son of the late Sam and Dovie Buchanan Guffey. He was married to the late Clara Brendle Guffey, who passed away in 1976. He was a construction worker and had worked for the NC Department of Transportation. He was a US Army Veteran, he enjoyed farming and was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by two daughters, Pauline White of Franklin, NC and Jerdy Holland and her husband Richard of Columbia, SC; two sons, Jerry Guffey and his wife Jackie and Tom Guffey all of Franklin, NC; three grandchildren, Craig Holland, Chad Holland and Stacy Guffey; seven great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Pearl DeHart, Margie Kelly and Bessie Guffey and five brothers, Dewey Guffey, Lesley Guffey, Lonnie Guffey, Grady Guffey and Kiser Guffey.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 6th at 3:00pm in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home, with Rev. Wiley Gibson and Rev. David Williams officiating. Burial will be at Watauga Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Craig Holland, Chad Holland, Stacy Guffey, James Guffey, Tyler Holland, Steve Harrin, and Donnie Harrin. The Franklin VFW Post #7339 and American Legion Post #108 will conduct complete military graveside rites.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00pm Saturday evening at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home.

Mary Elizabeth Tallent Guyer

Franklin, NC - Mary Elizabeth Tallent Guyer, age 102, of Arvil Guyer Road, Franklin, NC passed away Sunday, December 27, 2009 at an Asheville Hospital. She was native of Macon County, the daughter of Jess and Fannie Campbell Tallent. She was married to E. Arvil Guyer who passed away December 28, 1999. She was homemaker and a member of Iotla United Methodist Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother.

She is survived by two daughters, Betty Sue Bukowsky and Barbara Ann Duncan of Franklin, NC; one son,Claude Guyer and his wife Nancy of Franklin, NC; one sister, Grace Plott of Canton,NC. Six grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by a son, Carroll "Edwin" Guyer and a granddaughter, Deborah Sue Mason.

Funeral services Will be held Wednesday, December 30 at 11:00AM in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. John Raby and Rev. Stacy Wood officiating. Burial will be at Iotla Baptist Church Cemetery. Adam Burrell, Eddie Guyer, Jimmy Guyer, Eric Duncan, Steven Mason and Megan Toth will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, December 29 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home.
