M. Gaff
Franklin,
NC - Thelma M. Garrison Gaff, 86, of the Holly Springs Community,
formerly of Homestead, FL passed away peacefully on February, 29,
2008 while surrounded by her family. She was born in Fitzgerald,
GA, the daughter of the late Wiley and Suzanna Williams Garrison.
She had worked at Minor's Market in Homestead, FL for the past 37
years. She had attended Redland Church of the Nazarene in Homestead,
and Holly Springs Baptist Church in Franklin.
She
is survived by three daughters; Voncile Brannan and husband Harold
of Franklin; Katherine Carney and husband Billy of Toomsaba, MS;
and Brenda Grady of Ocala, FL; one sister, Peggy Luke and husband
Phil of Fitzgerald, GA; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren
and one great-great-grandchild. She was precedeed in death by her
husband Woodrow "Woody" Gaff and son, Rick J. Gaff.
There
will be no services in Franklin. A memorial service will held at
Redland Church of The Nazarene, April 5 at 11:00 AM in Homestead,
FL. with Rev. Darin Pound officiating. Bryant-Grant Funeral Home

Highlands, NC
- Roland Ernest Galam, age 92, of Buckberry Rd., Highlands, NC passed
away Thursday, June 16, 2011 at his residence. Born in Baltimore,
MD, he was the son of the late Josef and Bertha Kohler Galam. He
was a veteran of the USN, joining the "Seabees" during
WWII and serving from 1943-1945 after which he worked for the Navy
Dept. as a civilian employee, retiring after 20 years. He was employed
by Chris Craft Corporation as foreman of their yacht building division
where he retired with 20 years service. Roland was a member of Our
Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church where he was an usher for
20 years. He enjoyed making furniture items for his wife.
He is survived
by his wife of 70 years, Claire Mary Bacon Galam and one daughter,
Valerie Cousino of Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
Funeral Mass
will be held Saturday, June 18, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of
the Mountains Catholic Church with Father Dean Cesa officiating.
The family will receive friends, Friday, June 17 from 6:00-8:00
p.m. at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home in Highlands. In lieu of flowers,
memorial donations may be made to Four Seasons Hospice, 571 South

Garber
Santa Barbara
CA - Annette Moore Garber, 93, formerly of Otto, North Carolina,
died in Santa Barbara, California on August 26, 2011, where she
had been living for the past three years to be near her daughter.
Born Fairy Annette
Moore on Sept 19, 1917 in Rabun Co, Georgia, she was the first child
of the late William Henry Moore and Delia Elizabeth Whitmire. After
graduating with honors from high school and junior college at Rabun
Gap Nachoochee School in Dillard, Georgia, she worked in food service
management at the Federal Reserve Bank and the National Youth Adminstration
in Georgia. While with the NYA, she became the first woman member
of the Georgia National Guard. Her early career also included time
at Bell Aircraft and then as a recruiting representative for the
U.S. Civil Service Commission.
In 1945, she
married Air Force Capt. Willis Roy Garber in Atlanta, Georgia. After
the war, they moved to Sacramento, California where their daughter,
Janice, was born. A successful businesswoman, she was active in
the Sacramento community, serving in many church and civic organizations
that drew frequent mention in the local newspapers. In 1962, she
appeared as a guest on the Art Linkletter Show and thereafter became
known nationally as the Rose Lady. In 1986, they retired
to Bell Rd, Otto.
She was preceded
in death by her husband of 59 years, two sisters, Margaret Picklesimer
and Ella Donaldson and two brothers, Newton Moore and J.B. Moore.
In addition to her daughter, son-in-law Paul Hanke of Warren, Vermont
and grandson, Brian Hanke of Burbank, California, she is survived
by a sister, Elizabeth Donaldson of Knoxville, Tennessee and two
brothers, John Moore of Franklin, North Carolina, Bob Moore also
of North Carolina and many nieces and nephews. A private burial
is planned in Otto, NC.

Rice Garrett
Frankllin, NC - Philip Rice Garrett, age 84, of Old Mill Creek Road,
Franklin, NC passed away Monday, November 3, 2008 at a local nursing
home. He was born in Irvine, KY, the son of the late McKinley and
Anna Jane Rice Garrett. He was retired from sales and service for
a building supply company, in Orlando, FL. He was a US Navy Veteran
serving during World War II and the Korean War, and was a member
of Memorial United Methodist Church.
He
is survived by his wife of 63 years, Phyllis Jean Folsom Garrett;
one daughter, Cherie D. Eicher and her husband Dave of Chiefland,
FL and one son, Stephen H. Garrett and his wife Rita of Gainesville,
FL; two brothers, Larry M. Garrett of Irving, KY and Dale W. Garrett
of Garland, TX; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren
also survive. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby G. Garrett.
Memorial
services will be held Saturday, November 15th at 2:00pm at Memorial
United Methodist Church, with Rev. Keith Newell officiating. The
Franklin VFW Post #7339 and American Legion Post #108 will conduct
military rites. The family will receive friends after the service
at the Church. Memorials may be made to a Charity of ones
choice.

NC - Ruth Eva Keener Garland, age 98, of Highlands, NC passed away
Wednesday, October 28, 2009 in a Clayton, GA hospital. She was born
in Rabun Co., GA, the daughter of the late Emory and Huldah Holbrook
Keener. She was a homemaker and a member of the Highlands United
Methodist Church where she was a member of the United Methodist
Womens Association. She is survived by two daughters, Rebecca
Cragg of Coppers Cove, TX and Mary Garland Newton of Pendleton,
SC; two sons, Dean Garland of Seneca, SC and Willard Garland of
Highlands, NC. Seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren
and two great-great grandchildren also survive. She was preceded
in death by a sister, Mattie Cabe and three brothers, Lee Keener,
Will Keener and George Keener.
Memorial
services will be held Sunday, November 1, at 2:00 PM at Highlands
First United Methodist Church with Rev. Paul Christy officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service.
In

- Virginia Lee Gash, age 86, of Franklin, NC went to be with the
Lord Monday, September 10, 2012 at the Tsali Care Center in Cherokee,
NC, where she leaves a family of staff and a host of friends. She
was born in Ela, NC on July 12,1926,
the daughter of the late Mose and Cora Lee Rogers Sanders of Franklin,
NC.
She was married
to the late Charles Gash. She was a homemaker as well as a member
of Macedonia Baptist Church in the Soco Community, and also attended
New Bethel Baptist Church in Franklin, NC. She loved working crossword
puzzles. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded
in death by four brothers, Theodore, Vernon, Harold and Judd Sanders
and one sister, Jena Mae Smith.
Mrs. Gash is
survived by a brother, William "Bill" Adron Sanders of
Franklin, NC, two sister in laws, Hattie Sanders of Brevard, NC
and Lula Mae Sanders of Sylva, NC, and a host of nieces, nephews,
great nieces and great nephews, family and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 14th at 2:00 pm
in the Chapel of Bryant Grant Funeral Home, with Rev. Keith Eddings
officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Nephews will serve
as pallbearers.
The family will

25, 2011. Born in Knoxville, TN, she was the daughter of Pat Spivey
Bell of Franklin, NC and the late Jerry Bell. She was married to
Lou Gasperin for 30 years and was a homemaker. She was a loving
wife and mother. Karin was retired from Raymond James in St. Petersburg,
FL.
In addition
to her mother and husband, Karin is survived by two daughters, Jessica
and Carley Gasperin of the home; two sisters, Pam and Melanie Bell
of Florida, and one brother, Joe Bell and wife Michelle of Otto,
NC. Two nieces, Savannah and Adrienne Bell also survive.

- Thomas Rudolph Gee 83 of the Clarks Chapel Community died Friday
May 28, 2010 at his residence. He was a native of Vero Beach , FL,
the son of the late Arthur Clair, and Julia Stanland Gee. He was
a supervisor for Florida Power company. He was a veteran of the
U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force, he served in WWII, he was a member
of the LST association ship # 723 organization, and a member of
Watuga Baptist Church.
He is survived
by his wife of 62 years Dorothy June Worrell Gee of Franklin, NC.
One daughter Karen Elaine Handwerker and husband Thomas Samuel Handwerker
of Salisbury, Maryland. Three sisters Joyce Miriam Dixon of Lakeland,
Florida, Winona Elizabeth Gribble of Gainesville Florida, and Bettye
Carolyn Lewis of St. Petersburg Florida. Three Brothers Harry Gee,
Donald Gee, and A.C Gee. Three Grandchildren Thomas Eugene Handwerker,
Kasey Niccole Handwerker, and Kelcie Michelle Handwerker.
Graveside services
will be held Monday May 31st at 3 p.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery with
Rev. Wesley Price and Rev. John Hartley officiating. Pallbearers
will be Bobby Gibson, J.D Gibson, Roger Bishop, Caleb Gibson, Alvin
Johnson, and Blaine Keener. Honorary Pallbearers will be Donald

NC passed away Thursday, April 30, 2009 at his residence. He was
born in Stephens County, GA, the son of the late James Lamar and
Myrtle Sapp Geoghagan. He was a welder and was of the Methodist
faith. He was Pit Master for Blue Valley BBQ Competition Cooking
Team. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and racing. He was a
loving husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, uncle and friend.
He
is survived by his wife of 42 years Judy Bennett Geoghagan; two
sons, Clinton Geoghagan and his wife Geanine of Martin, GA and Michael
Geoghagan and his wife, Kristi of Franklin, NC; three grandchildren,
Seth Masten, Bryson Geoghagan and Elijah Geoghagan. One sister also
survives. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bo Geoghagan.

10, 2012. Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Luther
and Minnie Angel Gibson. He was married first to Nancy Crawford
Gibson who died in 2003; then to Joyce Dobias Gibson for seven years.
He was a telephone cable splicer; he loved music and played the
steel guitar; he loved to garden, raising tomatoes and watermelons;
he liked his truck and loved his dogs, Heidi and Brandy. He attended
Mashburn Branch Baptist Church.
In addition
to his wife, Joyce, he is survived by one sister, Nell Cabe and
husband Robert of Franklin, NC and one niece, Shirlene Spradlin
and husband Melvin of Franklin, NC.

2010 in an Asheville, NC Hospital. He was a native of Macon County
the son of the late Lewis (Pete) and Helen Angel Gibson he was a
care taker, he graduated from Franklin High School Class of 1971.
He enjoyed NASCAR Racing, woodworking, raising cactus plants, and
collecting heavy equipment models. He was a member of Mashburn Branch
Baptist Church.
He is survived
by two Aunts, Ruth Griffin of Franklin, NC and Rosa Lee Gibson of
Waynesville, NC and several cousins.

NC passed away Monday, May 25, 2009 at a local care center. She
was a lifelong resident of Macon County, the daughter of the late
Samuel and Nannie Sellers Green. She was married to J.D. Gibson
who passed away in 1961. She was a sales clerk having worked for
the 5 & 10 cent store, Bowers Department Store and the Army
Store. She worked for the Job Corp for over ten years. She was a
member of Louisa Chapel United Methodist Church where she served
as a choir member. Kate loved to fish.
She
is survived by her daughter, Audrey Ledbetter and her husband, Max
of Franklin, NC; her son,, Dan Gibson and his wife, Edna, Eight
grandsons, fifteen great-grantchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mavis Bates, three sons,
Robbie Gibson, L.T. Gibson, Carroll Gibson; six sisters, Rittie
Waldroop, Laura Waldroop, Anna Henson, Gwendolyn Reese, Beatrice
Wallace, Genevive Johnson; three brothers, Hamilton Green, Tim Green
and Bill Green.

services will be held Wednesday, May 27 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel
of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. David Crunkleton and Rev.

husband Johnny of Sylva, NC and one brother, Tracy Gibson and wife

- Richard
Elliot (Homey) Gilfillan, age 75, of Cashiers, NC passed away Monday,
July 11, 2011 at his residence. Born in Mount Vernon, Ohio, he was
the son of the late Paul and Beth Cooley Gilfillan. Richard was
a real estate and tax attorney, graduating from the University of
Arizona and the University of Michigan Law School. He was a sailor,
participating in four Transpac races and several Baja, California
and Key West, FL races. Richard was a scuba diver, baseball coach,
and a master wood craftsman. He was of the Episcopal faith.
He is survived
by his wife of 33 years, Karen Gilfillan; two daughters, Stefanie
Bacon of Santa Barbara, CA and Julie Ingram of Evergreen, Colorado;
a step-daughter, Kimberly Robertson of Brentwood, TN; son. Daniel
Gilfillan of Kailua, HI; a step-son, Clay Carpenter of Brentwood,
TN; step-mother, Millie Gilfillan and two sisters, Mary Beth Showerman
of St. Petersburg, FL. and Laura Harrod of Havana, FL. Ten grandchildren
also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister,
Helen Brain and one brother, Paul Gilfillan, Jr.
Family and friends
know hes happily sailing the ocean blue, loving the smell
of salt water, the smack of the sails and the sounds of the hull
cutting through the water. A rum and tonic in hand, his beloved
folk music playing and a satisfied grin on his tanned blue-eyed
ole salt face. Bless him. Capn Homey was just passin
through and now hes home.

October 16, 2011. Born in London England, she was the daughter of
the late James and Annie Perry. She was married first to Arthur
James Weston and later to David Loos Gill. She was a seamstress
and loved to sew for her friends. She was a member of St. Agnes
Episcopal Church.
Ethel is survived
by one son, Brian Weston and wife Nancy of Franklin, NC; one sister,
Shirley Smith of Harlow England and one brother James Perry of London
England. Six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive.
In addition to her parents and husbands she was preceded in death
by a daughter, Maureen Weston and a son, Graham Weston.

will be held Monday, October 24, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel
of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Dorrie Pratt officiating.

Bertha Fay Edwards Girard, age 97, of Durham, NC, formerly of Brevard,
NC, passed away Tuesday, January 18, 2011. She was born in Macon
County, the daughter of the late Mack Daniel Edwards and Perdita
Bolick Edwards. She was married to the late Harold Addison Girard.
She was a member of Brevard United Methodist Church. She had worked
in a paper mill for 45 years. She loved to garden (much more than
house work) and was known for her excellent road work and bizarre
method of performing same in the rain. She knew the importance of
liming apple trees, loved to wear Pith helmet, rubber galoshes and
culottes. She loved to travel and keep in touch with her many relatives,
she loved music - thought the Beatles harmonized well. She loved
the ocean, lakes, ponds, creeks and streams.
She is survived
by two daughters, Virginia Johnson and husband Leon "John",
and Jerry Taylor and husband Lee; two grandchildren, Dianna Lee
Taylor and husband Sean Smith and Christopher Harold Taylor. She
was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Johnson,
who died in 1982. She was the last of the children of Perdita and
Mack Daniel Edwards. She was preceded in death by her siblings,
Dan, Virginia (Sis), Truie, Floyd, Troy, John, Eric, Cecil, Bruce,
and Felicia.
Funeral services
will be held Saturday, January 22nd at 2:00pm in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant
Funeral Home in Highlands, with Paul Edwards officiating. Burial
will be in Horsecove Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Lee Taylor, Chris
Taylor, Terry Edwards, Paul Edwards, Joel Waldon, and Sean Smith.

Milton "Pond" Gold, Jr., age 69, of Sylva, died Sunday,
March 28, 2010, at his residence following a brief illness. Services
will be held at a later date.
Born
August 19, 1940, in Charlotte to the late Clara Hord Gold and Paul
Milton Gold Sr., he attended Myers Park High School, the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Kentucky,
where he earned a doctorate. After beginning his career in broadcast
radio as a radio personality and in radio station management, he
taught communications at Western Carolina University and Southwestern
Community college.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother.
Surviving are his wife, Marilyn; and one sister, Kathleen "Kathy"
Gold Lee of Charlotte. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's
choice.

NC passed away Sunday, February 1, 2009 inTitusville, FL. She was
born in Birmingham, AL, the daughter of Rufus and Elizabeth Robertson.
She was married to William Goode who passed away in 1996.
She
is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral
services will be held Sunday, February 8 at 3:00 PM in the Chapel
of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Abel officiating. The
family will receive friends Sunday from 2:00-3:00 PM, one hour prior
to service. Burial will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery.

- Robert
Frenger Goorey, Sr., age 85, of Franklin, NC, passed away Sunday,
January 31, 2010 in a local hospital. He was a native of Charleston,
West Virginia, the son of the late Albert Samuel Goorey and Severine
Virginia Frenger Goorey. He spent most of his life in Columbus,
Ohio. He owned a watch and jewelry store, and it is carried on by
his son Raymond. He was a US Navy Veteran of World War II and was
a Pearl Harbor survivor. He was a member of the National Association
of Watch and Clock Collectors, and a member of the Franklin American
Legion Post 108.
He
is survived by his wife of 43 years, Julia Russell Goorey; two daughters,
Linda Van Scoten of Virginia Beach, VA, and Sheri Goorey Pappas
and husband Dorian of Foothill Ranch, CA; a step-daughter, Barbara
Buckner White and husband Stephen of Nashville, TN; three sons,
Robert Kenneth Bishard and wife Bonnie, of Virginia Beach, VA, Robert
F. Goorey, Jr., of Rock Hill, SC, and Raymond Goorey of Pasadena,
CA; eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral
services will be held Friday, Feb. 5, 2010 at 2:00pm in the Chapel
of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home, with the American Legion Chaplain
officiating. The Franklin VFW Post #7339 and American Legion Post
#108 will conduct military rites. The
family will receive friends Friday from 1:00-2:00PM, one hour prior
to the service at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home.
The
family would like to extend its sincere gratitude to the staff of
Angel Medical Center for their care, support & compassion.

'Tennie" Grant, 68 of Plant City, FL formerly of Nantahala,
NC passed away July 26, 2012 at Tampa General Hospital in Tampa,
FL. Christeen
loved to live for the Lord. She used her talents of singing and
playing the piano to share her faith with others. She and her husband
Marvin went on mission trips to Africa annually from 1992-2006.
She also went on mission trips to Jamaica and Turks & Caicos
Islands.
Christeen was
the daughter of Anna Nichols Rowland of Aquone, NC and the late
Elmer "Red" Rowland. She is survived by her husband of
53 years, Marvin Grant; her three children, Darla Jones, Brad Grant
and wife Jayne of Nantahala, Tyra Grant of Gibsonville, NC; eight
grandchildren, Tristan Smith and wife Dana of Nantahala, Nathan
Grant and wife Carrie of Robbinsville, Jessica and Amanda Grant,
Kasidy, Dustyn and Levi Garrett; two great grandchildren, Miracle
and Noah Grant; one step-great granddaughter, Danielle Crabtree;
two sisters, Phyllis Bateman and husband Bert of Aquone, Shirley
Oswalt and husband Tom of Aquone and Lakeland, FL, and one brother,
Joe Rowland and wife Judy of Aquone, numerous nieces, nephews, great
nieces, and nephews, cousins and family friends. She
will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers,
the family requests that memorials be made in memory of Christeen
Grant at the United Community Bank, Andrews, NC to assist with medical
expenses.
The memorial
service will be held at Briartown Baptist Church at 12:00 p.m.,

- Helen Henson Grant, 91, formerly of Franklin, died August 15 at
Brooks-Howell Home in Asheville. Mrs. Grant was born Nov. 19, 1919,
to the late Lonnie and Ora Henson of Otto. She was married for 53
years to Dr. Ben P. Grant, a Franklin dentist who died in 1994.
She worked as a bookkeeper at the former Burrell Motor Company and
later was office manager for her husbands dental practice.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.
Although family and friends were always her first priority, she
was also an avid gardener and bridge player.
Survivors include
one son, Benn Grant and his wife Beverly, of Asheville; one daughter,
Rebecca Sexton and her husband Ken, of Morehead, Ky.; one granddaughter,
Helen Gentry and her husband David, of Franklin; and one great-granddaughter,
Victoria Gentry.
Survivors also
include one brother, Gilmer Henson and his wife Anna Will, of Otto;
one sister, Roberta Palmer, of Marysville, California; and many
nieces and nephews.
In addition
to her late husband, Mrs. Grant was also preceded in death by two
brothers, Calvin Henson of Franklin, and Ralph Henson of Otto; one
sister, Maybur Norton, of Franklin; and also by sisters-in-law Lena
Henson and Mary Delaney, both of Franklin, Maureen Henson of Otto,
Louise Rogers of Andrews, and Alice Dillahunt of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services,
officiated by the Rev. Janet Greene, will be held at the Payne Place,
380 Ledford Drive, in Franklin, at 11:00 a..m. on Friday, August
19. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to
Macon County Public Library, 819 Siler Rd., Franklin, NC, 28734.
In addition,
the family would like to express their sincere gratitude and appreciation
to the staff and residents at Brooks-Howell Home for eight years
of loving care and to Care Partners Hospice for their devoted care
and guidance.

NC - Robert "Bob" D. Graves, age 74, of Otto, NC passed
away Friday, January 11, 2008 in an Asheville Hospital. He was born
in Dean County, WI, the son of the late Emerson Frank and Emily
Jean Carterson Graves. He was an aircraft mechanic for the US Air
Force with 20 years of service. After retirement he worked for Hampton
Electronics in Hampton, VA. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist
Church.
He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Frida Henson Norton Graves;
two sons, Robert Michael Graves of Hampton, VA and Frank Emerson
Graves and his wife, Donna of Hampton, VA. Two grandchildren also
survive. He was preceded in death by a son Ronald Dean Graves.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 16 at 2:00 PM at
Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Binger officiating.
Burial will be at Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery. Dennis
Henson, Randy Henson, Jamie Henson, Steve Henson, Jimmy Norton and
Pat McCall will serve as pallbearers. The VFW Post # 7339 and the
American Legion Post #108 will perform complete military graveside
rites.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, January 16 from 1:00-2:00

- Windell Ray Gravitt, age 36, of Franklin, NC passed away Thursday,
February 21, 2008 in an Asheville Hospital as a result of an automobile
accident. He was born in Walker County, Ga., the son of Mary Alice
Headrick Gravitt of Chickamauga, GA. and the late Anthony L. Gravitt.
He was a truck driver for Koster Construction.
In
addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 16 years,
Angela Thomas Gravitt; his three daughters, Samantha and Kayla Gravitt
of the home and Adrianna Bryant of the home; his son, Dalton Gravitt
of the home; his mother and father-in-law, Dewey and Barbara Thomas
and his brother-in-law, Danny Thomas; his sister, Lucy Barrett;
his brothers, Darrell Gravitt and his wife, Sharon of Franklin,
NC, Charles Gravitt and his wife, Wanda and Tony Gravitt and his
wife Cheryl all of Chickamauga, GA and Daren Gravitt of Ft. Oglethorpe,
GA.
Several
nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral
services will be held Monday, February 25 at 2:30 PM in the Chapel
of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Benny Hurst and Rev Ricky
Potts officiating. Burial will be at Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery.

Carlene Owenby Grant, age 92, of the Nantahala Community went home
Saturday, April 7, 2012 in Clay County Care Center. She was the
daughter of the late C. B. "Tump" and Emma Grant Owenby.
She was married to Noel Grant who passed away in 1986. Carlene was
a member of Bethel Hill Baptist Church and had served on the cemetery
committee for several years. She loved her family and loved singing
and quilting. Carlene sang with the Hampton Branch Quartet for several
years. She was retired from Owenby Manufacturing Company.
Surviving are
two sons, Gerald Grant and wife Della Mae of Thomasville, NC and
Guy Grant and wife Charlotte of Hayesville, NC. Four grandchildren,
Edwin, Terry, Danny, and Paula Grant; eight great-grandchildren
and three great-great grandchildren also survive.
She was preceded
in death by four sisters, Genessa Owenby, Exie Taylor, Beulah Wishon,
Gladys Owenby; a half-sister, Kate Trammell; one brother, Buford
Owenby and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services
will be held Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at 2:00 PM at Bethel Hill Baptist
Church with Rev. S. J. Waters, Rev. Darrell Dockery and Rev. Doyce
Waters officiating. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery. Pallbearers
will be grandsons and nephews. The family will receive friends one

Rodney
Gordon Grantham
Scaly
Mtn., NC -Rodney Gordon Grantham, age 80 of Rocky Knob Lane, Scaly
Mtn., NC passed away Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at his residence.
He was born in Jamestown, NY, the son of the late Rodney Gordon
Grantham, Sr and Irene Wahl Grantham. He served as a surgical scrub
nurse in the US Navy during WWII and the Korean War. He had a long
career as a Hydrologist specializing in ground and surface water
for the US Geological Survey. He was also a musician for a number
of years playing both saxaphone and clarinet. While stationed in
Yokuska, Japan, during the Korean War, he began the study of Judo,
eventually reaching the rank of third degree black belt. After returning
to the states he began teaching judo and established several judo
schools in Alabama. In 1967 he began the study of Aikido and reached
the rank of sixth degree black belt.
He
founded the Aikido Center of Atlanta which is the third oldest Aikido
dojo on the East Coast and is still in existence having been given
over to one of his students. He and his wife Janet also collected
Japanese woodblock prints (ukiyo-e) and amassed a collection spanning
250 years. He became one of the few experts in the Southeast and
did appraisals and identifications. They exhibited parts of their
collection at Japan Fest and Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, GA
and at The Bascom-Louise Gallery in Highlands, NC as well as several
other places.
He
is survived by his wife of 35 years, Janet Davids Grantham; one
step-daughter, Christine Reid Shaw of Atlanta, GA; three sons, Rodney
Grantham, III of Roswell, GA, Dana Grantham of Hartwell, GA and
Mark Grantham of Atlanta, GA; one step-son, Steven LeConte Shaw
of Silver Springs, MD. Three grandchildren also survive. He was
preceded in death by a daughter, Marie Grantham and a son Richard
Grantham.
A
memorial service will be held at a later date in Atlanta, GA

May 1, 2012. Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of the late
Ervin and Sybil Moss Bradley. She was married to Arthur Green, Jr.
for thirty-nine years. She was a secretary for the U. S. Forest
Service for twelve years; she was a member of Louisa Chapel United
Methodist Church where she was the Childrens Sunday School
Teacher. Judy was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who loved
being with people, especially children.
In addition
to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Greg Allen of Otto,
NC, Rick Green and wife Pat and Larry Green all of Franklin, NC;
three sisters, Noreen Gibson of Dallas, NC, Merle Adameit of Otto,
NC and Freda Justus of Clayton, GA; two brothers, Lawrence Bradley
of Marietta, GA and Richard Bradley of Otto, NC; six grandchildren,
Morgan Green, Lauren Bowen, Jennifer Bowen Gilbreath, Amber Allen,
Mitchel Green, Brittany Green Carr; two great-grandchildren. In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister,
Geneva Potts; one brother, Gene Bradley and a grandson, Adam Green.

will be held Thursday, May 3, 2012 at 4:30 PM in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant
Funeral Home with Rev. David Crunkleton officiating. Burial will

NC - Grady Joyce Greene, age 79, of Pat Rogers Rd., Franklin, NC,
went to be with his Lord, Monday, December 20, 2010. A native of
Macon County, he was the son of the late Homer Calfax and Esther
Reece Greene. He was married to Carolyn Jean Houston Greene for
53 years. He was a weight and balance operations agent for Eastern
Airlines; a Veteran of the US Air Force during the Korean War; he
was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church where he was very
active and held various positions in the Church incuding singing
in the choir, a member of the finance committee and the building
committee as well as being a member of Patton String Band.
In
addition to his wife he is survived by one daughter, Kathleen Joyce
Greene Daum and husband Rick of Austell, GA and one son David MacLane
Greene and wife Connie of Newnan, GA. Two grandchildren, Zachary
Daum and Sean Greene also survive. He was preceded in death by one
sister Janelle Sanders and two brothers, Homer L. and Max Greene.
A
memorial service will be held Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at 2:00
pm at Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Keith Newell officiating.
The Franklin VFW Post #7339 and American Legion Post #108 will conduct

- James Silas Green, age 95, passed away Saturday, October 30, 2010
at a local hospital. He was a native of Macon County, born May 6,
1915 to William Hillard and Hattie Mae Beasley Green. He was married
fifty-five years to his wife, Eula Shepherd Green who passed away
in 1993. His second wife, Ida Feltner Green preceded him in death
in 2008. He was preceded in death by four sons, Thomas Paul, J.
B., Rufus, and Ira: one daughter, Hattie Josephine Green; six brothers
and six sisters. He was a logger and a miner and was a member of
the Liberty Baptist Church. He enjoyed nature such as camping and
just being outdoors.
He
is survived by two daughters, Dorothy Wilkes and her husband, Ellis
and Florence Bulla, a son James David Green and his wife Janie;
three grandsons, one granddaughter, three great-grandsons; step-sons,
Frank, Paul, and Charles Feltner; step-daughters, Hazel, Meadie
Mae, and Rosie Feltner. A number of step-grandchildren also survive.
He is also survived by a special lady, Nina, who was a wonderful
caregiver and loved him very much.
Funeral
services will be held at 2:00PM, Tuesday, November 2, 2010 in the
Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with the Rev. Andy Cloer officiating.
Pallbearers will be Wesley Wilkes, Mitchell Wilkes, Danny McClain,
Junior Burch, Eddie Raby and Donald Messer. Burial will be in the
Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends

C.L Carpenter. She was a Bookkeeper and CNA for Britthaven Nursing
Home. She loved working with people at Britthaven and loved to do
embroidery. She worked as a cook in local restaurants.She was a
member of Bethesda Independent Baptist Church.

addition to her Mother, she is survived by her son, Sammy Carpenter
and his wife Amanda of Franklin, NC; her pet dogs, Charlie and Sissy.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Donna Stacey.

He was married
to the late Ruth Angel Griffin, who passed away April 4, 2011. He
was a US Navy Veteran, serving during the Korean War. He was a self
employed construction worker, he loved animals and was of the Baptist
Faith. He is survived by several nieces and nephews.

will be held Friday, August 19th at 3:30 pm in the Chapel of Bryant
Grant Funeral Home, with Rev. Alton Dendy officiating. Burial will

NC - Annette " Annie" Marcella Griffiths, age 81, of Locust,
NC formerly of Franklin, NC passed away Tuesday, February 2, 2010
at her residence in Locust, NC where she resided with her grandson
David and his family. She was born in New Haven, Connecticut the
daughter of the late Pasquale and Jennie Ginnestra Stellato. She
was married to Eugene Griffiths who passed away in 1987. She was
a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church where she served
as parish council, a Lector, and an extraordinary minister of Holy
Communion and was on the Board of Trustees.
She
is survived by one daughter, Linda Nardelli of Mint Hill, NC; one

St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Father Tien Duong officiating.

" Phyl " Sue Grindstaff
Franklin,
NC - Phyllis " Phyl " Sue Grindstaff , age 53, of Jacobs Branch
Road, Franklin, NC, went home to heaven on Wednesday, April 16,
2008 at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC. She was
a native of Macon County, the daughter of Daphine Jones Green of
Franklin and the late James Crawford Jones. She was a Pharmacist
Assistant at Walmart Pharmacy, and attended Franklin Church of God.
She shared her strong faith with everyone around her. She loved
her family and her numerous friends very much. She was such an inspiration
to everyone. She has blessed many lives. Her memories will last
forever.
She
is survived by one daughter, Amanda Holden and her husband Donnie
of Franklin, NC; three sisters, Hazel Scott and her husband Milton
of Franklin ,NC , Sue Darnell of Savannah, GA and Rachel Guthrie
and her husband Richard of Franklin, NC; four brothers, Paul Shuler
and his wife Ernestine, Lonnie Jones and his wife Wanda, and Jerry
Jones all of Franklin, NC; and L. R. Jones of Winter Haven, FL.
Many nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral
services will be held Sunday, April 20th at 3:00pm at Franklin Church
of God, with Rev. Allen Taylor, Rev. Alton Dendy and Rev. Clark
Sheffield officiating. Burial will be in the Sheperd Cemetery.
The
family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00pm Saturday evening
at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home, where the body will remain until taken
to the Church thirty minutes prior to the service.

- Bobby Ray Guest, age 58, of Wide Horizon Drive, Franklin, NC passed
away Thursday, April 21, 2011 at his residence. Born in Macon County,
he was the son of the late Fred Ernest and Lois Ledford Guest. He
was a veteran of the United States Air Force; he worked at the Normandie
Restaurant for several years and at the City Restaurant. He was
a radio announcer for WFSC radio; he loved farming and raising cattle.
Bobby was a member of Longview Baptist Church where he was Sunday
School Teacher; Chairman of Deacons and Teacher of RAs.
He is survived
by one brother, Terry Guest of Franklin, NC; two uncles, Raymond
Ledford of Webster, NC and Leonard Guest of Hertford, NC and one
aunt, Daralene Parris of Hendersonville, NC.
Funeral services
will be held Sunday, April 24, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Longview Baptist
Church with Rev. Nick Smith and Rev. Johnny Lee officiating. Burial
will be in Longview Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be
Ricky Scott, Fred Stiles, Glen Southards, Dennis Crunkleton, Colbert
Henson, Leon North, Frank Cabe, Joe Ballew, J. P. Moore and Dale
Holland. The family will receive friends Saturday, April 23, 2011

NC - Margaret Baldwin Guest, age 92, of Nut House Drive, Franklin,
NC passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at Flat Rock, NC. She was
a native of Macon County, NC the daughter of Harley E. and Allie
Humphrey Baldwin. She was married to the late Jack Guest who passed
away in 1977. She was a homemaker, a member of the pink ladies for
20 years at Angel Medical Center, a member of the home extension
club and former president of the Democrate Women. She was a member
of Holly Springs Baptist Church.
She
is survived by two daughters, Allie Sue Ray of Tuson, Arizonia and
Jewel "Frances" Hargrave and husband, Charlie of Ponca
City, OK; two sons, Roger Lewis Guest of Ann Arbor, MI and James
David Guest and his wife, Geri of Quincy, MI; one sister, Thelma
Freeman of Weaverville, NC; two brothers, Harold Baldwin of Marietta,
GA and Charles Baldwin of Texas. Fifteen grandchildren, twenty-nine
great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survives. She
was preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys Evanson and Olatta
Wells and one brother, Howard Baldwin.
Funeral
services will be held Saturday, July 26 at 10:00 AM at Holly Springs
Baptist Church with Rev. Eddie Trull, Rev. Judson Hall and Rev.
Lewis Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

family will receive friends Friday, July 25 from 6:00-8:00 PM at
Bryant-Grant Funeral Home where the body will remain until placed

NC - Robert Benjamin Guffey, age 95, of Franklin, NC, passed away
Friday, April 4, 2008 at his residence. He was a native of Macon
County, the son of the late Sam and Dovie Buchanan Guffey. He was
married to the late Clara Brendle Guffey, who passed away in 1976.
He was a construction worker and had worked for the NC Department
of Transportation. He was a US Army Veteran, he enjoyed farming
and was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by two daughters, Pauline White of Franklin, NC and
Jerdy Holland and her husband Richard of Columbia, SC; two sons,
Jerry Guffey and his wife Jackie and Tom Guffey all of Franklin,
NC; three grandchildren, Craig Holland, Chad Holland and Stacy Guffey;
seven great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death
by three sisters, Pearl DeHart, Margie Kelly and Bessie Guffey and
five brothers, Dewey Guffey, Lesley Guffey, Lonnie Guffey, Grady
Guffey and Kiser Guffey.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 6th at 3:00pm in the
Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home, with Rev. Wiley Gibson and
Rev. David Williams officiating. Burial will be at Watauga Baptist
Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Craig Holland, Chad Holland,
Stacy Guffey, James Guffey, Tyler Holland, Steve Harrin, and Donnie
Harrin. The Franklin VFW Post #7339 and American Legion Post #108
will conduct complete military graveside rites.

- Dale Guynn, 65, of Cody Rd, Franklin, NC, formerly of Jacksonville,
FL, passed away Saturday, July 31, 2010 in an Asheville hospital.
Born in Duval Co., FL she was the daughter of the late David Franklin
Smith and Ruth Juanita Cole Smith. She was retired from banking
in the customer service department. She loved gardening, crocheting
and loved animals.
She is survived
by two daughters Renee Ravan and Norman Williams of Yulee, FL and
Dawn Marie Goode of Franklin, NC; two sons Brian Ravan and Doreen
Jenkins of Semora, NC and Matthew Goode of Franklin, NC and one
brother David Smith and Sharon of Jacksonville, FL. One granddaughter
Celeste Bottorf of Franklin, NC also survives.
A memorial service
will be held Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel
of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Sharon Smith officiating. The
family will receive friends following the service at Bryant-Grant
Funeral Home.

Elizabeth Tallent Guyer, age 102, of Arvil Guyer Road, Franklin,
NC passed away Sunday, December 27, 2009 at an Asheville Hospital.
She was native of Macon County, the daughter of Jess and Fannie
Campbell Tallent. She was married to E. Arvil Guyer who passed away
December 28, 1999. She was homemaker and a member of Iotla United
Methodist Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother
and great-great grandmother.
She
is survived by two daughters, Betty Sue Bukowsky and Barbara Ann
Duncan of Franklin, NC; one son,Claude Guyer and his wife Nancy
of Franklin, NC; one sister, Grace Plott of Canton,NC. Six grandchildren,
twelve great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren also
survive. She was preceded in death by a son, Carroll "Edwin"
Guyer and a granddaughter, Deborah Sue Mason.
Funeral
services Will be held Wednesday, December 30 at 11:00AM in the Chapel
of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. John Raby and Rev. Stacy
Wood officiating. Burial will be at Iotla Baptist Church Cemetery.
