Judson E.
Hair
Highlands,
NC -Dr. Judson E. Hair went home to be with his Lord on Sunday,
September 16, 2012.
He was predeceased
by his beloved wife of 63 years, Mary P. Hair. He is survived by
his three sons and daughters in law, Judson and Betty Hair, James
and Victoria Hair and Harrison and April Hair and one daughter and
son in law, Anne and Kevin Killilea as well as his eight grandchildren,
Patrick Hair, Christopher Hair, Jessica Hair, MaryEllis Hair, Caitlin
Killilea, Beau Hawks, Peyton Hawks and Aubry Hawks, and his sister,
Mrs. Lillian Hair Jervey. He was affectionately known to friends
and family as Big Daddy.
Dr. Hair was
born in Columbia, SC on April 8, 1925, the son of Harrison B. and
Myrtle P. Hair. He attended Clemson University and graduated from
the College of Charleston and the University of South Carolina Medical
School. He also served in World War II as a pilot in the US Army
Air Corps.
After a short
time in private practice, he came to Clemson University to run the
student health service and also served as the team physician for
athletics until his retirement. As a pioneer in the field, he received
the Ruth Boynton Award for service to Student Athletic Medicine.
He also was inducted into the Clemson University Athletic Hall of
Fame in 2000.
At the time of his death, he was living in Highlands, NC and was
a very active member and Deacon Emeritus at the First Baptist Church
of Highlands. The church was the center of his life and he was loved
by all as a spiritual and Godly leader. Dr. Hair had attended a
very sweet Homecoming Service where he led the prayer and was sharing
lunch with all of his church family when he died of a sudden heart
attack. His family and friends have found peace in the Lord taking
him home in a place and at a time that meant so much to him.
There will be
a celebration of his life on Saturday, September 22 at 4 pm at the
First Baptist Church of Highlands. Pastor Charles Harris will officiate.
A special supper for family and close friends will be served at
the church following the service.

First Baptist Church of Highlands, 220 Main Street, Highlands, NC

Highlands - Mrs. Frances Rose (Bagdonas) Hajdukiewicz, of Clearwater,
FL and Highlands, NC died October 27, 2009.
She was born
Nov. 11, 1917 in Athol, MA. widow of beloved husband, William V.
Hajdukiewicz. She is survived by her sister Matilda Bullock of Gardner,
MA. and brother Augustine F. Bagdonas of Elmira, NY.; daughter,
Mary Ann Stanford (Aubrey) of Otto, NC and son, David F. Hajdukiewicz
(Barbara) of Lawrenceville, GA. and two grandchildren, Heather Hajdukiewicz
of Decatur, GA. and Tad Stanford (Kristina) of BelleIsle, FL. Frances
was a resident of Gardner, MA. Largo and Clearwater, FL.
Frances was
mentioned in two books written by Pearl K. McGown for her handmade
hooked rugs. She was a member of the Pinellas Deanery, Tampa U.,
Polish Heritage and Knights of Columbus Ladies. Memorial services
for Mrs. Hajdukiewicz will be determined at a future date to be
held at St. Catherine of Siena, Clearwater, FL.

Eddis Holbrook
Hall
Winston Salem
- Mrs. Eddis Holbrook Hall, 97, entered eternal rest on October
15, 2011 when she passed away peacefully at her home in Winston-Salem.
She was born on December 11, 1913 in Franklin, NC to the late James
Robert and Mattie Pearl Holbrook, one of ten children. She was preceded
in death by her beloved husband, Herbert Hayes Hall, who died in
1988. She was a member of Ardmore Baptist Church, the Mary Martha
Sunday School Class and the Senior Citizens Club. Since her birth
in 1913, she was also a member of Cowee Baptist Church in Franklin.
Eddis spent
her summers in Franklin but when cool weather arrived, she returned
to her home in Winston-Salem. She will be remembered for her dedication
to both her churches where she remained active almost to the end
of her life. She was a wonderful cook and will be long remembered
for her pound cakes and cheese rings which she lovingly made for
friends and family.
She leaves behind
one beloved sister, Mrs.Vennie Davis of Winston-Salem; dear nieces
and nephews: Zena Pearl Brogdon, Ernest Childers, Evelyn Gregory,
Diane Holbrook, Jim Holbrook and Jane Wright all of Franklin; David
Burrell of Walnut Cove; Betsy Chapman of Arlington, VA; Nancy Cheek
of Lexington; Alden Childers and Jean Childers of Whittier; Wayne
Davis of Kernersville; Sandra Dorton of Concord; Debra Dula of Charlotte;
Margaret Duvall of Aynor, SC; Susan Medford of Milwaukee, WI; Patti
Sisson of Asheville; Bob West of Mocksville, Betty Wills of Norfolk,
VA. Eddis did not have children but she truly loved her stepfamily
and treated them as her own. Surviving members of her stepfamily
are one son-in-law, William R. Nunn, Jr., of Bermuda Run; four grandchildren,
Herbert R. Hall, Jr. (Fleeta), Judy Everhart (Clarence), Daughn
Eagan (David) all of Winston-Salem; and Gordon Nunn of Pittsburgh,
PA; and six great-grandchildren, Brooke DiSorbo (Steve), Sandy Hall,
Christopher and Kerry Eagan, and Ryan and Lane Everhart.
The family is
grateful to her special neighbors, Steve and Judy Motsinger, who
made dinner for her every Saturday night and helped her in so many
ways.
In Winston-Salem,
the family will receive friends on Monday, October 17, from 6:00
to 8:00 p.m. and a Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday,
October 18, at 11:00 a.m. Both services will be held at Vogler and
Sons Funeral Home, 2951 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem.
In Franklin,
NC, the family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 19, at
noon followed by a 1:00 p.m. funeral service with internment to
follow at Cowee Baptist Church, 6301 Bryson City Road, Franklin.

Franklin,
NC - Mary Isabelle Hall, age 84, of Franklin, NC, passed away Wednesday,
February 16, 2011 in a local nursing home. She was a native of Macon
County, the daughter of the late Friday Hawshaw and Mattie Thompson
Porter. She was married to the late Gilmer Lee Hall. She worked
as a waitress.
She
is survived by a step daughter, Ophelia Burgess of Petersburg, VA
and a sister-in-law, Mabel Thompson of Franklin, NC. One step-grandchild,
several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Hall, Jr.,
Morganton -
A kind and gentle man, Walter Lee Hall, Jr., 75, of Morganton, closed
his eyes to this world on Friday, October 23, and awakened refreshed,
renewed, and in the presence of his heavenly Father.
He is survived
by and awaits a joyful reunion with his family: his wife of 55 years,
Roberta Snyder Hall; his son and daughter-in-law, Howard and Melissa
Hall of Morganton; and his three grandsons, Hayes, Leighton, and
John Coleman Hall. He is also survived by sister-in-laws: Margaret
and L.C. Howard of Franklin, NC; Ann Norton of Marriottsville, Maryland;
Ruth and Edwin Curley of Ann Arbor, Michigan; and a brother-in-law,
Hayes and Margaret Snyder of Franklin, NC. He is also survived by
numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Walter was born
in Sylva, NC, on January 28, 1934, the son of the late Walter Lee
Hall and Wilma Hall Crisp. His early years were spent in Franklin.
He served as the Business Manager-Treasurer for Montreat-Anderson
College and, later, worked as the Finance Officer for Macon County.
He retired and moved to Grace Ridge Retirement Community in Morganton
seven years ago to be closer to his grandchildren.
An avid reader,
Walter was passionately interested in genealogy and in history,
particularly the history of Western North Carolina. He authored
a book regarding his hometown of Franklin entitled "An Afternoon
in Franklin." He was a dedicated Christian and was active in
several churches: First United Methodist of Franklin, First United
Methodist of Morganton, and, previously, Montreat Presbyterian in
Montreat, where he served as an Elder. He was actively involved
in numerous church and civic organizations including: the Gideons,
the Rotary Club, the Old Buncombe Genealogical Society, the Macon
County Historical Society, the Burke County Historical Society,
the Sons of the Confederacy, the Civil War Roundtable, the Sons
of the American Revolution, and the First United Methodist Book
Club.
After a private
burial at Woodlawn Cemetery in Franklin, funeral services will be
held Tuesday at 3 pm at Franklin's First United Methodist Church.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday afternoon at 3 pm in
Morganton at the First United Methodist Church.
The family will
receive friends immediately following each service. Details can

Leon Hamilt, age 74, of Kent Drive, Highlands, NC passed away Monday,
March 30, 2009 at his residence. He was born in Haverhill, MA, the
son of the late Albert and Gladys Pononsky Hamilt. He grew up in
the Haverhill and Boston area. He was a US Airforce Veteran serving
during the Korean Conflict. He worked for years as supervisor in
the cutting department of Pandora Industries in Manchester, NH.
He moved to Peachtree City in 1978. He had worked for a General
Motors Dealership as a Internet Computer Manager in Griffin, GA
for 26 years. He was loved by everyone he met with his great sense
of humor and love of music. He was a Ham Radio operator (KD4UK)
and rode a Honda Motorcylce which he continued to ride until Dec.
2008. He retired to Highlands, NC in 2004.
He
is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sandra Baty Hamilt; two sons,
Gregory W. Hamilt of Suwannee, GA and Douglas M. Hamilt of Atlanta,
GA; one grandson, Jonathan Hamilt and two granddaughters, Elizabeth
and Melanie Hamilt; one sister, Judith Yaffi of Boston, MA; two
nephews, Richard Yaffi and Warren Yaffi of Boston, MA; one niece,
Laurie Yaffi of Boston, MA; one grandniece, Tara Yaffie of Boston,
MA; two daughter-in-laws, Ona Hamilt and Amy Hamilt. He was preceded
in death by one son, Keith Alan Hamilt.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, April 11 at 3:00 PM
at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home in Highlands with Chaplain Mary Wetzel
officiating. Fran Keck will also say a few words. The family will
receive friends from 2:00-3:00 PM, one hour prior to service at
Bryant-Grant Funeral Home in Highlands.

Ellie Justice Vinson. She was married to Randall O. Harbour who
passed away in 1984. She was a homemaker, she enjoyed gardening
and flowers and was an avid Braves fan.
She is survived
by one daughter, Judy Harbour of Franklin, NC; one son, Randall
V. Harbour and his wife, Helen of Longwood, FL; grandchildren, Melanie
and Luis Rivera and Kelly Harbour. Many nieces and nephews also
survive. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Mabel Marchette,
Myrtle Ballew, and Bernice Vinson; five brothers, Howard, June,
Bob, Hoyt and Bill Vinson.

He was a mechanic, and was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
He loved his Harley.

Brendan Harkin

NC - > Edward Brendan Harkin, born October 17, 1925 passed away
peacefully in the arms of his loving wife Jeannine on November 25,
2010.
Born
in Stamford, CT, Ed began his career in aviation at the age of 15,
and retired as Chief Pilot of The Reader's Digest Association. He
touched the lives of so many and was instrumental in helping many
other young men achieve their dream of a career in aviation. In
addition to Jeannine, he leaves behind his loving children; E. Brendan
Harkin, Jr., Barry Harkin, Melissa Harkin and Wendy Harkin Kosloff.
He will also be missed by his grandchildren,nieces and nephews,
as well as the numerous friends he made in life. We have all been
blessed having him in our lives.

Lee Hart, died peacefully at his home on Friday, January 4, 2008,
at the age of 74. He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 50
years, Jane (nee Fox) Hart; daughters, Linda Lee (Mark) Piegore
and Mary Jane (Neal) Weintraub; grandchildren Mark Jr., and Ashley
Piegore, and Sylvia and Daniel Weintraub, sisters, Pat Dudick, Gerry
Sullivan and Mary Hart, numerous nieces and nephews and his loving
companion Bubba. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth and
Raymond Hart and his sister Sally.
Dan
graduated from St. Anthony's High School in Ft. Lauderdale, FL,
in 1951, where he was a star football and basketball player. He
accepted a scholarship to play football for the University of Florida
Gators. Dan then served in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of
Master Sergeant, in the newly created Special Forces (Seventh Division,
Green Berets). The miltary remained a lifelong passion for Dan,
who considered making it a career. However, he returned to the University
of Florida to finish his education, graduating in 1960. Dan worked
in the Background Music Industry, where he served in executive positions
with several companies. He was one of the 12 Limited Partners in
the Muzak Corporation when he retired in 1997 to enjoy the mountains
of North Carolina with his wife. Subsequently, Dan and Jane moved
to Iowa City in 2005, and to Cincinnati in 2007, to be near family.
Up until his death, Dan maintained an active role in the Background
Music Industry, serving as President of the International Business
Music Association since 1997. He also served as a volunteer at the
Iowa City VA from 2005-2006.
Dan
was an avid sportsman who loved fly fishing and football. He was
a lifelong fan and supporter of Notre Dame University, GO IRISH!
Dan had a terrific wit and befriended everyone he met. He was a
loving and generous person who had a great sense of caring for his
fellow man. Dan will be remembered fondly by the hundreds of family
members and close friends whom he touched.

services will be held Wednesday, March 26 at 10:00 AM at Bryant-Grant
Funeral Home. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Sunday, July 31, 2011 in a local nursing center. Born in Queens,
NY, she was the daughter of the late Albert K and Caroline S. Corwin
Drake. She was a homemaker; loved playing bridge and was a member
of St. Agnes Episcopal Church.
Grace is survived
by her husband of 66 years, Theodore W. Hawes, Jr; a son, Theodore
W. Hawes III; four grandchildren, Jessica, J. R., Jennifer and Shelly
Gerba; three great-grandchildren and longtime friend and caregiver,
Sue Passmore. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death
by a daughter, Gail Hawes Gerba and a great-grandchild, Anthony
Gerba.

will be held Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. at St. Agnes
Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dorrie Pratt officiating. Burial

married to William C.Hawkins I who passed away in 1985. She was a
homemaker and a member of Clear Creek Baptist Church. She loved gardening
and flowers.
She is survived

NC; two step-sons, Dr. Larry Hawkins of Huntsville, AL and Jerry
Hawkins of San Diego, CA; three grandchildren, Corbin, Hayley and
Samuel Hawkins; four sisters, Opal McCall and Doris Hicks of Highlands,
NC, Gail Henry of Easley, SC and Mae Ivester and her husband Dennis
of Satolah, GA; two brothers, Homer Bryson and his wife Eloise of

-Frank
J. Hayes, Jr, age 85, of Highlands, NC formerly of Tamarac FL. passed
away Friday, December 19, 2008. He was born June 4, 1923 in Staten
Island, New York. He was the son of the late Frank Joseph Hayes,
Sr and Jennie Wood Hayes. He was married to the late Mary Crunkleton
Hayes, who died July 7, 2008. He was a US Navy Veteran of the Korean
Conflict. He was a retired Police officer of NYPD with 20 years
service and worked for JC Penneys for 15 years. He was a Past
Grand Knight of Assumption Council. Frank was a member of Gold Star
Post of American Legion and a member of the VFW. His greatest joy
was golfing and fishing with his grandchildren. He was a member
and parishoner of the Holy Family Catholic Church.
He is survived
by two daughters, Kathleen Castella and her husband, Richard of
Frisco, TX and Mary Brooks and her husband, William; and his two
sons, Frank Hayes, III and his wife, Julia and John Hayes and his
wife, Maggie all of Staten Island, NY; a brother-in-law to Mildren
Kessler and Lydia Langell; grandchildren, Frank Hayes, IV, Catherine
Hayes, Joey, Justin and Matthew Hayes, Katlyn, Ricky and Jesse Castella,
Billy, Travis, Austin and Casey Brooks. He was preceded in death
by a sister, Dorothy Abbott and a granddaughter, Annie Castella.
Funeral services
will be held Monday, December 22 at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of the
Mountain Catholic Church with Father Dean Cesa officiating. Burial
will be at the Miller Cemetery. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Funeral Home in Highlands.

Highlands, NC - Mary
Virginia Crunkleton Hayes passed away on Juy 7, 2008 in Tamarac,
Florida. Mary was born in Highlands, NC on July 1, 1931 to Ralph
and Virginia Crunkleton. She is survived by two sisters, Mildred
Kessler and Lydia Langell. Mary graduated from Highlands High School
in 1949. She moved to Staten Island, NY in 1950. She is survived
by her husband Frank J. Hayes, Jr. In addition to her husband of
55 years, she is survived by two sons, Frank J. Hayes, III and John
Thomas and two daughters, Kathleen Ann Hayes Castella and Mary Eileen
Hayes Brooks. She is survived by 12 grandchildren and preceded in
death by a granddaughter Ann Marie Castella. Mary was an avid bingo
player and enjoyed bowling and playing golf. She enjoyed shopping
as well. She was a member of the Knights of Columbus Columbietts
and of the Red Hat Society. She was retired from Staten Island University
Hospital as a head cashier.
Funeral
services will be held Saturday, July 12, 2008 at 10:00am at Our
Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church, with Father Dean Cesa officiating.
The family will receive friends fro 6:00 to 8:00pm Friday evening
at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home in Highlands. Burial will be in Miller
Cemetery. In lieu of flowers any donations to the Highlands Biological
Center in the name of Mary Crunkleton Hayes would be appreciated.

"Dottie" Evelyn Hazlett, age 86, passed away Friday, December
2, 2011. Born in Villagrove, IL, she was the daughter of the late
James Robert and Scotta Mae Sebastian Henry. She was married for
18 years to the late Luther Scott Hazlett who died October 7, 2011.
She was sub-registrar for vital statistics for Hillsborough Co.
Health Dept in Tampa, FL for 18 years. She was a member of Macon
County Senior Games and was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church.
Dottie is survived
by one daughter, Gayle Whittle of Tampa, FL, two sons, Gary Whittle
of Franklin, NC and Glen Whittle and wife Tina of Mills River, NC;
one granddaughter, Callie Lynch and husband Joel and two nieces,
Gladys Schneider of San Mateo, CA, and Cheryl Aldridge of Jacksonville,
FL and one nephew Leonard Thomas Henry of Tampa, FL.
Funeral services
will be held Thursday, December 8, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at Holly Springs
Baptist Church with Rev. Ed Trull officiating. Burial will be in
the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Kelly Corbin, Kevin Corbin,
Harvey Hauversburk, Joel Lynch, Shawn Keener, Gary Whittle and Glen

Scott Hazlett, age 88, of Franklin, NC passed away Friday, October
7, 2011. Born in South Point, OH, he was the son of the late George
and Mary Webb Hazlett. He was a retired command sergeant major in
the United States Army with 32 years of service; he served in the
Armour Division from 1943-1969; was a 32nd degree mason; a member
of VFW; participated in the Macon County Senior Games and was an
avid golfer. He was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church.
Luther is survived
by his wife of 18 years, Dorothy E. Hazlett, one step-daughter,
Gayle Whittle of Tampa, FL; three sons, Glen Whittle and wife Tina
of Mills River, NC, Gary Whittle of Franklin, NC, and David Hazlett
of Gastonia, NC; three sisters, Betty Drew, Venice Craddock and
Bernadell Blumenstock; one granddaughter, Callie Lynch and husband
Joel of Franklin, NC; 2 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces
and nephews.
Funeral services
will be held at 3:00 PM Monday Oct. 10 at Holly Springs Baptist
Church with Rev. Eddie Trull officiating. Burial will be in Holly
Springs Baptist Church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Glen Whittle,
Gary Whittle, Joel Lynch, Frank Hauversburk, Donald Bruce Tallent
and Jeffery Shawn Keener. Franklin VFW Post #7339 and American Legion

Friday, April 15, 2011 in Dahlonega, GA. She was a native of Macon
County, the daughter of the late Frank and Minnie Clark Stiwinter.
She was married to the late Elmer Hedden, who passed away in 1977.
She was a homemaker and a member of Walnut Creek Baptist Church
since 1953. She attended church regularly.
She
is survived by three sons, Wiley Hedden of Franklin, NC, Marshall
Hedden of Winston-Salem, NC and Larry Hedden of Dahlonega, GA; and
one brother, Otis Stiwinter of West Virginia. Twelve grandchildren
and sixteen great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in
death by two daughters and two sons; one sister and one brother.
Funeral
services will be held Monday, April 18, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Walnut
Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Alton Dendy and Rev. Wesley Hooper
officiating. Burial will be in Strain Cemetery. Pallbearers will

away Friday, May 13, 2011 in a local care center. A native of Macon
Co., he was the son of the late John and Ruie Woods Hedden. He was
a carpenter and a Veteran of the United States Navy. He attended
the Church of God.
He is survived
by his wife of 66 years, Arvina Moss Hedden; his daughter, Marveta
Shaw of Naples, FL; his two sons, Willard Hedden of Naples, FL and
Verlie Hedden of Inverness, FL; two sisters, Allie Gibson and Ina
Carpenter of Franklin, NC; one brother, Homer Hedden of Franklin,
NC. Four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive.

Saturday, June 25 at a local hospital. She was a native of Macon
County, the daughter of the late Frank Morgan and Mamie Shepherd.
She was married to the late Lensy Hedden who died in 1989. She retired
from Belden after 25 years as a machine operator. She was a loving
mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved growing flowers
and gardening. She was a member of the Liberty Baptist Church.
She is survived
by four sons, Richard Hedden of Alto, GA, Jimmy Hedden of Frankin,
NC, Charles Hedden of TN and Earl Hedden and his wife, Gail of Buford,
GA; three sisters, Pennie Hedden, Daphine Green and Ann Bogan all
of Franklin; one half-sister, Terri Queen of Franklin; one brother,
Walter Shepherd of Asheville, NC. Seven grandchildrenand nine great-grandchildren
also survive. She was preceded in death by one brother and one half-brother;
two sisters and two half-sisters and three grandchildren.
Funeral services
will be held Monday, June 27 at 2:00Pm in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant
Funeral Home with Rev. Wiley Gibson and Rev. Alton Dendy officiating.
Burial will be held at the Woodlawn Cemetery. Ronnie and Randy Hedden,

NC - Cedric (Whitey) Hefferan, age 84, of Franklin, NC passed away
January 11, 2010 at Angel Hospice. He was born in Chicago on Feb.
16, 1925. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, June; three sons,
Steven (Krystal)of Boulder, Co, Brian (Patty) of Inverness, IL,
Kevin (Jeni) of Wonder Lake, IL; Stepson Steve (Trudy) Mueler of
Salt Spring Island, BC; stepdaughter, Wendy (Drake) Mertes of Inverness,
IL; 9 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren, and his Annie. He will
be sorely missed along with his own sense of humor.
He
was a decorated veteran of WWII, serving in the Third Infantry Division
and was wounded twice in action. He retired from Centel Telephone
where he had started as a lineman after the war, and was very proud
of his role under four presidents as White House Communication Liaison
for presidential visits to Chicagos OHare Field.
Whitey
was proud of his accomplishments as a high school athelete who never
lost his love of sports throughout his life. He played semi-professional
hockey as a young man, and had a passion for golf until the end.
The
family would like to extend its sincere gratitude to the nurses
and staff of Angel Hospital and Hospice for their care, support
and compassion. We will be forever indebted to them for their exceptional
personal involvement. Contributions to Angel Hospice, 170 Church
Street, Franklin, NC 28734 , would be greatly appreciated to help
in their acquiring a Hospice Home.
A

Hefner, age 74, went to be with his Lord, Friday, March 09,
2012 at Sylva, NC. He was a native of Jackson County, NC the son
of the late William H. and Bonnie Cunningham Hefner. He was married
to Nancy Dills Hefner who passed away in 2011. Bones was retired
from Champion Paper Company and had worked at Auman Furniture Manufacturing
for several years. He loved to play the Harmonica and loved hunting,
fishing and camping. He was a member of Locust Field Baptist Church.
He is survived
by two sisters, Patsy Whittington of Andrews, NC and Jeannean Wilson
and her husband, Doyle of Andrews, NC; three brothers, Conrad Hefner
and his wife, Donna of Franklin, NC, Jack Hefner and his wife Kay
of Trinity, NC and Dick Hefner and his wife Myrtle of Clyde, NC.
Several nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death
by a brother Billy Hefner.

Athens, AL and Sammy Hedden of Franklin, NC; six sisters, Lora Hedden

Community Church. He was a coach in Fannin County for 28 years.

Hardin Hendricks who died in February 2008. She was an elementary
school teacher in Duval County school system in Jacksonville, FL;
was a member of Highlands Womens Club and a member of Community
Bible Church where she was a Sunday school teacher.
Mrs. Hendricks
is survived by one son, John Bryant Hendricks and wife Karen of
Highlands, NC and two grandchildren, Hannah Marie Hendricks of Conroe,
TX and Joshua Bryant Hendricks of Cullowhee, NC. She was preceded
in death by a son, Ronald "Ronnie" Hendricks; three sisters,
Elsie, Mary Elizabeth and Betty and one brother, Willard Bryant.

will be held Sunday November 11, 2012 at 4:00 pm at Community Bible
Church in Highlands with Pastor Gary Hewins and Pastor Steve Kerhoulas

NC - Samuel Hardin Hendricks, age 94 of Fallen Leaf Lane, Highlands,
NC passed away Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at his residence. He
was born in Murray, KY, the son of John Hendricks and Ona Wadkins
Hendricks. He moved to South Florida with his family when he was
10 years old. He lived in Jacksonville, FL for most of his career,
working for the Navy Department as a Systems Analyst.
Survivors
include his wife of 67 years, Charlene; a son, John Bryant Hendricks
of Highlands, a daughter-in-law, Karen, and two grandchildren, Hannah
& Joshua. Mr. Hendricks was a Christian and his life as a Christian
was very important to him. At one time, while living in Jacksonville,
his peers gave him the honor of naming him the most outstanding
"Layman of the Year" award in the Christian churches in
the state of Florida.
A
memorial service will be held in his honor at the Community Bible
Church at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 15. In lieu of flowers, donations

nursing home and was of the Baptist faith.

to her mother and husband she is survived by one daughter, Pamela
Ann Gilbert of Murfreesboro, TN; one step-son, Chad Hensley and
wife Cathy of Franklin, NC and one brother, Jack Thomas Hughes of
Springfield, MO. Four grandchildren also survive.

the US Forest Service and Department of Transportation. He was a

He
is survived two sisters, Bessie I. Zachary of Franklin, NC and Annie
Mae Hensley of Scaly Mtn., NC; a number of nieces and nephews also
survive.

He had one step-daughter Shannon (Eugene) Shuler. He was Pops to

the delight of his life.

both of Highlands; two sisters Betty Butts of Highlands and Helen
(Zane) Talley of Anderson. He was predeceased by his Dad and Mom,
Ed and Alma Henry of Highlands; a sister, Jane Henry Edems of Pickens,
SC. He was a proud uncle to many nieces and great nieces, nephews
and great nephews.
He
was a graduate of Highlands High School and Lakeland Florida Forestry
School. He worked for US Forest Service and Macon County Sheriffs
Dept. for many years and was a retired caretaker for Westbrook Farms.
He was a member of Blue Ridge Lodge 435 AF & AM; loved old cars
and trucks and singing.
Funeral
services will be held Thursday, September 16, 2010 at 1:00 p.m.
at Highlands First Baptist Church with Rev. Andy Cloer and Rev.
Hugh Westbrook officiating. Burial will be in Clear Creek Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Tim Hunter, Josh Talley, Bill Smith, Kevin Henry,
Eugene Shuler and Steven Foster. The family will receive friends
from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at Highlands

- Fredrick Glenn Henry, age 79, of Franklin, NC, passed away Tuesday,
May 15, 2012 in an Asheville hospital. He was born in Pickford,
Michigan, the son of the late Glenn and Edna Brown Henry. He was
a US Army Veteran, and was a recipient of the Purple Heart during
the Korean War. He had worked for the State Mental Health Clinic
in Pontiac, Michigan, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing,
and was a member of the Kiwanis of Franklin.
He is survived
by his wife of 59 years, Julia Ann Wood Henry, two sons, Patrick
Henry and wife Carlene of Waterford, Michigan and Jeff Henry of
Franklin, NC; a brother, Ernie Henry and wife Linda of Texas, several
grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in
death by a son, Christopher Henry and a brother, Keith Henry.

- Johnny Delano Henry, age 70, of Highlands, NC, passed away Saturday,
January 9, 2010 at his residence. He was a native of Macon County,
the son of the late Spear and Dessie Ramey Henry. Mr. Henry retired
as Street Supervisor for the Town of Highlands with 35 years service.
He was of the Baptist Faith. He was a loving husband and father
and the best Paw Paw in the world.
He
is survived by his wife of 51 years, Anna Lee Webb Henry, five daughters,

Tommy of Clayton, GA, Linda Rollins and husband Robby of Franklin,

St. Cloud, FL and Terry Henry and wife Linda of Highlands, one brother
Kibby Henry Sr. of Franklin. 15 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren

chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home in Highlands with the Rev Junior
Jenkins officiating. Burial will be in Highlands Memorial Park.

NC - J. L. Henry, age 71, of Franklin, NC, passed away Thursday,
March 11, 2010, in a Sylva Nursing Home. He was a native of Macon
County, the son of Bernice Smith Henry of Franklin, NC, and the
late Roy "Nick" Henry. He was a Science Teacher and Basketball
Coach at Piedmont College for several years and had taught school
at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School and Macon County Schools. He also
had worked for Burrell Motor Company for several years. He coached
several Little League Basketball Teams in Macon County. He was a
Baptist by faith.
He
is survived by his sister, Lucy Pickens and husband Charles of Franklin,
NC; three nieces and four nephews and several great-nieces and nephews
also survive. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Don Henry
and Ray Henry and a niece, Jana Byrd.
Graveside
services will be held Sunday, March 14th at 3:00pm at Woodlawn Cemetery,
with Rev. David Powell officiating. The family will receive friends,
one hour prior to the service at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home.

custodian.

of Jacksonville, FL and Danny Moore of Middlesburg, VA. Nine grandchildren

NC - Gladys Naomi Hensley, age 95 of Franklin, NC passed away Friday,
January 21, 2011 at a local nursing center. She was born in Logan
County, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Dennis and Rhoda
Thompson Berry. She was married to Bruce Hensley who died July 06,
1995. She worked at a Shell factory and was a member of the Franklin
Church of Christ. She was an outdoor person who loved to garden
and camp. She also loved going to Church and worshiping God.
She
is survived by her daughter, Geraldine Nash of Franklin, NC; four
grandchildren, Dianna Dooley, Donna Nash, Duane Nash and Annette
Bragg; eight great-grandchildren, Christi Jones, Jessica Betts,
Eric Seymour, Jill Seymour, Amy Provost, Chad Seymour, Ashley Bragg
and Daryan Nash and six great-great grandchildren. She was preceded
in death by a son, Jerry Hensley; a son-in-law, Robert Nash, a sister,
Louise Curry and five brothers.
The

a friend to all in his community and an active member of Asbury
United Methodist Church.

of the US Army. He owned and operated a dairy farm for over 40 years
and was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church. He was a
very loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
He is survived
by his wife of 55 years, Anna Howard Henson; two sons, Barry Henson
and Scott Henson and his wife, Rhonda Caudill Henson of Otto, NC;
one granddaughter, Jessica Henson; one sister, Roberta Palmer of
Marysville, CA. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He was
preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Grant and Maybur Norton
and two brothers, Ralph and Calvin Henson.
Funeral services
will be held Sunday, August 28 at 2:00PM in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant
Funeral Home with Rev. Duane Corle and Rev. Janet Greene officiating.

In addition
to her mother and step-father, she is survived by one daughter,
Savannah Herman of Franklin, NC; one son, Cody Herman of Franklin,
NC, one sister, Lisa Smith of Chesapeake, VA; two brothers, John
Usher of Apopka, FL and Michael Boruch of Portsmouth, VA and several
nieces and nephews. She is also survived by extended family members,
Jackie Herman, Mackenzie Herman and David and Stacy Herman all of
Franklin, NC.

of Tampa, FL; stepson, Jose C. Gonzalez; son in law, Chris Dillard
of Franklin, NC; three sisters, Margie Mason, Selma Craine, and
Faye Wilson all of Franklin, NC; one grandchild, EmaLeigh Raine
Dillard. She
was preceded in death by her grandson, Randall Skylar Dillard.

Curtis Preston
Hester
Highlands -
Curtis P Hester, 82, went to be with his Lord on August 7, 2011.Curtis
was born on November 19, 1928 in McRae, GA to parents Thelma and
Claude Hester. The family later moved to Miami Florida and he graduated
from Edison High School in Miami. He joined the US Navy from 1952
to1953, then went on to a work for the Clark, Cameron and Barclay
Company and eventually for Goodall Rubber Company selling industrial
rubber supplies.
After friends
Bill and Evelyn Hall introduced him to Highlands, NC he fell in
love with the area and visited many times over the years with his
family. In 1990, after retiring from a career with Goodall Rubber
Company, he moved to Highlands permanently. There he was an active
member of society as a member at the Community Bible Church of Highlands
and volunteering at the Fidelia Eckerd Living Center, the Community
Playhouse, delivering Meals on Wheels, and for the Literacy Council,
teaching children math.
He always maintained
a curiosity and zest for life, friends and new experiences. Even
in retirement he remained productive by working locally selling
electronics, as a security guard, as a postal worker, doing tax
preparation and as a census enumerator. In between these various
careers he found time to explore the world visiting Australia, New
Zealand, Hawaii, the Panama Canal, Belize, Mexico, Scotland, England,
France, British Columbia, Alaska, the Bahamas, and Jamaica.
He is survived
by his wife, Hazel W Hester of Highlands, NC; son, Gary Hester and
wife Donna Hester of Orlando, FL; daughter, Lynn Hester Human of
Jacksonville, FL; step-daughter, Michelle Truman of Orlando, FL;
grandson, Jason Human and wife Carly Human of Orlando, FL; granddaughters,
Jennifer Human of Jacksonville, FL and Nicole Hester of Orlando,
FL; sister, Grace Wilson of Kissimmee, FL; brother Jon Hester of
Pembrook Pines, FL;. He was preceded in death by his first wife
Wanda Lynn Hester; brothers, Gereld Hester and David Hester; and
sister, Jeannie Keith.
Services will
be held Thusday, August 11 at 10:00AM at Vista Memorial Gardens
in Miami Lakes, FL with Rev. Harry Laverne Keith, II officiating.

Mrs. Frank and Hazel Sager Helzel. He was married to the late Sylvia
Hubner Helzel. He was a US Navy Veteran, serving during World War
II, and was a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church, serving on
the Church Council. He previously owned a heating and air company,
and taught at Santa Fe Junior College in Gainesville, FL.
He is survived
by 5 sons and four daughter-in-laws, Jon and Ana Rhoads and Alan
and Debbie Rhoads both of Alachua, FL, Randy Rhoads of Gainesville,
FL, Todd and Neida Rhoads, of Orlando, FL, and Phil and Debbie Rhoads
of Greer, SC; one sister, Barbara Monday of Gainesville, FL; eight
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive.

NC - Joyce Meredith Hetzel of Highlands, NC, formerly of Sanford,
Florida, died October 23rd in Highlands. She was the daughter of
H. C. and Geraldine Hetzel who had a summer cottage here since 1924.
She graduated from the University of SC, where she was a Delta Delta
Delta, and attended Tulane University where she received her Masters
Degree in Social Work. She specialized in child welfare work in
Dayton Beach & Sanford, FL. After retirement, she moved to Chestnut
Hill in Highlands. She was an active member of the Episcopal Church
of the Incarnation, where she served on the Vestry & was a choir
member. She was a volunteer at the Highlands-Cashiers Hospital.
She was a talented artist, loved Nature, gardening, music &
singing. She spent her life caring for & helping other people.
To know her was to love her.
Survivors
include her two sisters, Ann Beatty of Atlanta & Janet Fisher
of Miami, one brother, Rev. Alan Dorn Hetzel & his wife Hazel
of Black Mountain, NC. Also surviving is her long-time companion,
Martha Wight and numerous nephews and nieces.
In
lieu of flowers, memorial remembrances can be made to Hospice of
Highlands at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital and The Church of the Incarnation
in Highlands.
Her
service will be held in the Chapel of The Church of the Incarnation,
Sunday, October 26, 2008 at 2:00pm. Rev. Brian Sullivan and Rev.
Alan Hetzel will officiate. A Reception will follow at the Club
House at Chestnut Hill (off Buck Creek Road) for friends and family.

Roper Higdon, 96 of Franklin went to be with her Lord Friday March
23, 2012. She was a native and lifelong resident of Macon County,
the daughter of the late Lawrence and Carrie Ann Tallent Roper.
She was married to Howard Higdon who died in 1984. Mrs. Higdon was
a homemaker and was the second oldest member of Oak Dale Baptist
Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother
and great-great-grandmother. She loved her family and enjoyed quilting
and gardening.
Surviving are
three sons, Charles Higdon and wife Judy of Franklin, George Higdon
and wife Linda of Sevierville, TN and Jimmie Higdon and wife Mary
Nell of Franklin. two sisters, Ethel Ammons and Louise Williamson
both of Franklin. 8 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 1
great-great-grandchild also survive. She was preceded in death by
three sisters, Ruby Reeves, Lillie Bryant and Marie Dayton, two
brothers, Roby and Harvey Roper.
Funeral services
will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday March 27th at the Oak Dale Baptist
Church with the Rev. Guy Duvall and Rev. John Raby officiating.

- Betty Louise Higdon, age 90, of Paris, TN, formerly of Franklin,
NC, passed away Tuesday, July 26, 2011. She was born in West Union,
West Virginia, the daughter of the late Glennwood and Mary Agnes
McInTosh Phillips. She was married to the late James Dean Higdon,
who passed away July 4, 1997.
She is survived
by two daughters, LaVerne Williams and husband Joe of Paris, TN,
and Kathryn Marshall and husband Larry of Roswell, GA; two brothers,
Marvin Phillips of West Virginia and William Phillips of Pennsylvania.
In addition
to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers,
Max Phillips and Bob Phillips.
Graveside services
will be held Saturday, July 30th at 2:00 pm at Sugarfork Baptist
Church Cemetey.

- Katheryn Carolyn DeWeese Higdon, age 80. went to be with the Lord
Thursday, November 10, 2011. She was born September 23, 1931 in
Hazelwood, NC to Gaye DeWeese and Ada Penley DeWeese. She graduated
from Woodfin High School in 1949 and Blantons Business School. She
was formerly employed by Beacons Manufacturing office, the V.A.
Hospital and The Farmers Federation. She retired from Memorial
Mission Hospital as a medical transcriptionist in 1998. Carolyn
was a member of Elk Mountain Baptist Church in Woodfin, NC, where
she proudly played the piano for 14 years. She was also a member
of the Eastern Star, Weaverville Chapter. She was a beautiful, giving
person and a wonderful loving mother and grandmother and will be
greatly missed by her family and all who knew her. In addition to
her parents, she was preceded in death by a baby sister, Jacksie
and a brother, Carmel.
She is survived
by her sons, Joe Higdon & his wife Kathy of Asheville, NC, Bruce
Higdon and George Higdon of Franklin, NC; her daughters, Stephanie
Ramsdell of Wooster, OH and Mary Lee Blaine & husband, John
of Franklin, NC. Carolyn was a proud grandmother to 5 beautiful
grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service
in celebration of her life will be scheduled in the spring.

- Rosemary Highsmith, age 67, of Franklin, NC passed away Sunday,
August 12, 2012 at a local nursing home. She was born in Duval County,
FL, the daughter of the late Elton Roy and Lula Mae Scott Moore.
She was married to the late Jerome Marvin Highsmith, Sr. She was
employed as a waitress and was of the Baptist faith. She was a loving
mother, grandmother and aunt. She loved gardening.
She is survived
by her daughter, Latresa Mason and husband, Ricky of Franklin, NC;
four sons, Robert Reibach and James Highsmith and wife Jennifer
of Jacksonville, FL, Jerome Marvin Highsmith, Jr and wife Tracy
of Franklin, NC and Jeffery Ramon Highsmith of Jacksonville, FL;
grandchildren, April, William, Heather, Stephanie, Robert, Deborah,
Felicia, Marybeth, Jessica, Casey, Katlyn, Aubri, Laya, Brayden,
and Gabriel; one great granddaughter and one great grandson; four
sisters in law; three brothers in law and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.
The family will
receive friends Tuesday, August 14 from 6:00 7:00 at Bryant Grant
Funeral Home.

- Ransom "Bud" Dana Hill, age 80, of Franklin, NC passed
away Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at a local nursing home. He was born in
Morrisville, VT the son of the late Glenn and Hazel Perry Hill.
He was married to the late Joan Hill. He was a retired plumber and
was President of the Pittsburg NH Snowmobile Club.
He is survived
by a daughter, Joyce Stanley and her husband, Jerry, of Franklin,
NC; a sister, Patricia Dimick of Weathersfield, VT and two grandchildren,
Matthew Triller and Lucas LCuyer.

Winifred May Bellingham Hill, 103 years young, died Saturday, Aug.
22, 2009 . Born in London, England on January 10th, 1906, she came
to America when she was one. She grew up in New York, went to secretary
school in Herkimer, NY where she went to work. In 1926, she married
Allen M. Hill. They lived in many places including Lakeland, Fl.,
St. Petersburg, Fl. and Franklin, N.C. coming to Georgetown, Fl
in 1990. She loved to travel including going back to England on
many trips. In her lifetime, she worked as a secretary, bookkeeper,
seamstress and made shell jewelry. Her hobbies were crocheting and
many other crafts. She was a member of the Howe Memorial United
Methodist Church.
Mrs. Hill is survived by two daughters: Phyllis Pritchard of Amherst,
N. Y. and Doris Tompkins of Flagler Beach; seven grandchildren,
fifteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
A
graveside service will be held Thursday, September 3, at 1:00 PM
at Iotla Methodist Church Cemetery.

Hill
Franklin, NC
- Ronald L. Hill was born in Norwalk, Conn., May 9, 1923, the son
of Roy and Ruby Dennis Hill.
He graduated
from Norwalk High School where he was a percussionist in the band
and orchestra. He was active in Boy Scouts and youth group of the
Congregational Church where he was a member.
He enlisted
in the Navy in January, 1941. After training, he was assigned to
the Fleet Air Wing II in Pearl Harbor. He survived bombing and strafing
when the Japanese attacked on December 7th. He served in the Flag
Unit under Admirals Mitchner and Halsey.
His next assignment
was the Carrier Air Craft service unit 54. From there he went to
the V12 program at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania; he was assigned
to the U.S.N. base on Saipan.
Returning to
civilian life after the war he was purchasing agent at Reflecton
Corp. He was recalled by the navy in the Korean War, serving in
London, England in the Military Sea Transportation Service. After
the conflict he was employed by Martin Marietta as a subcontract
analyst and negotiator. He retired as assistant subcontract director.
He was married
to Sylvia Spates for 52 years when she passed away in 1996. He is
survived by two sons, Bruce and Craig; two grandsons; two granddaughters
and seven great-grandchildren. He married his second wife Peggy
Hopkins in 1997.
Ron had been
a member of the American Legion and the VFW. He was a member of
the First Methodist Church where he sang in the choir for many years.
Memorial services
will be held Monday, June 25, 2012 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant
Funeral Home with Dr. John Foster officiating. The family will receive
friends Monday from 1:00 until 2:00 pm, one hour prior to the service,
at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may

Walter Hirt, Jr
Sylva,
NC - Warren W. Hirt, Jr, age 78, of Sylva, NC passed away Sunday,
August 16, 2009. A native of Detroit, Michigan the son of the late
Warren Walter Hirt, Sr and Hilda Gobbetti Hirt, he was a US Marine
Veteran during the Korean conflict. After his military service,
he relocated his family to South Florida, where they remained for
over 40 years. Before owning and operating a family insurance agency
in Fort Lauderdale for 20 years, he and his father owned a real
estate development business. In 2002, he and Mitzi moved to their
mountain home in Western NC where he dedicated his retirement to
serving the community, supporting Habitat for Humanity of Macon
County, NC and working with other non-profit organizations.
He
is survived by his wife, Mitzi Fairfield Hirt to whom he was married
for 58 years; one daughter, Gretchen Harkins and her husband, Robert
of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; three sons, Paul Hirt and his wife Linda
Jakse of Tempe, Arizona, Warren Hirt III of Ft. Pierce, FL and Stephen
Hirt of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; one sister, Janice Jackson of Michigan;
three grandchildren, Chana, Daniel and Evan. Three great-grandchildren
also survive.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 until 6:00pm, Friday, August
21st in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home, with the memorial
service beginning at 6:00pm.

George Martin "Bud" Hogsed, age 63, of Franklin, NC passed
away Friday, May 11, 2012. Born in Macon County, he was the son
of the late Evan Washington Hogsed and Louise Hamby Hogsed. He worked
for the local power company for 38 years. He was a lifelong member
and supporter of United Steel Workers Local #7202. He was also a
member of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter #094.
He is survived
by his wife of 44 years, Selma J. Hogsed of Franklin; one son, Brad
Hogsed and his wife Jennifer Hogsed; two grandchildren, George Samuel
Hogsed and Emily Louise Hogsed, two sisters, Patricia Rutherford
of Conway, SC and Kathy DeLay of Atlanta, GA; and one brother, Doug
Hogsed of Franklin. To the many friends Bud left behind, a final
message: It all pays the same.

Daisy Robbins Hamby. She was married to the late Evan Hogsed who
passed away June 18, 2000. She was a homemaker and a member of the
First Assembly of God Church. She was retired from Belden. Louise
loved gardening and yardwork. She also loved helping children and
cooking.
She
is survived by two daughters, Patricia Rutherford and her husband,
Patrick of Conway, SC and Kathy DeLay of Dacula, GA; two sons, Bud
Hogsed and his wife, Selma and Doug Hogsed and his wife, Donna all
of Franklin, NC; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Ethel Herd and one brother,
William Leroy "Bud" Hamby.

on Hickory Knoll on Friday, December 19, 2008 after a lengthy illness.
She was a life long resident of the Hickory Knoll Community. She
is preceded in death by her husband, Alex L. Holbrook who passed
away in 1986; her son, Larkin A. Holbrook of Rabun Gap, GA; two
grandsons, John Edward Holbroook, Michaeal Ray Leedom; her parents,
Ingram and Sadie Conley; two sisters, Betty Waldroop and Louise
Conley; four brothers, Bill Conley, Jim Conley, John Conley, and
Joe Conley all of Franklin. She was a homemaker and a member of
Coweeta Baptist Church. She loved to garden and her flowers. She
was "Granny" to all the grandchildren and will be missed.
She is survived
by her daughter, Margaret Crotty (Peggy) of the home; six grandchildren,
Jeff Holbrook of Mountain City, GA, Timothy Leedom of Virginia Beach,
VA, Tammy Vaughn and her husband, Billy of Augusta, GA, Steven Leedom
and his wife, Dana of Evan, GA, Christopher Leedom of Atlanta, GA,
Billy Leedom of the home. Also fourteen great-grandchildren and
five great-great grandchildren.

2001. Hazel was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She was a homemaker; loved to camp, read and cook for family and
friends and was a member of East Franklin Baptist Church.
She is survived
by a daughter, Beverly "Sissy" Jenkins and her husband
Ray of Franklin, NC; two sons, Richard Dale Holland and his wife
Jerdy of West Columbia, SC and Ronnie W. Holland and his wife Carolyn
of Franklin, NC. Three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren;
five step-great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; three
half-sisters and one half-brother also survive.

away peacefully on November 28, 2012 at her home in Naples. She
was born in Macon County, the daughter of the late Nelson Lewis
Ledford and Edna Ledford. She had been a resident of Naples since
1962. Mrs. Holland had owned her own real estate companies, Tropical
Realty in Naples and Turner River Realty in Everglades City. She
was a loving wife, mother and doting grandmother, and loved working
crossword puzzles, arts and crafts, camping, traveling, and attending
music festivals. She attended the Franklin Church of God.
She will be
dearly missed by her loving husband of 53 years, Charles "Chuck"
Holland; sons, Jeffrey Holland and wife Samara of Brevard, NC, and
Michael Holland of San Francisco, CA and his loving ex wife Conda
Holland of Tampa, FL; brother, Buddy Ledford of Andrews, NC; four
grandchildren, Kristen Harper, Wesley Holland, Ryan Holland and
Delaney Holland; two great grandchildren, Micah Harper and Lily
Harper.

will be held Thursday, December 6th at 11:00 am in the Chapel of

Lavae Mashburn Holland, age 94, passed away Sunday, April 29, 2012.
She was born in Macon County, NC, May 17, 1917, the daughter of
the late Bert Mashburn and Florence Bryson Mashburn. She was married
to the late Lester K. Holland who died February 12, 1982. She was
also preceded in death by her grandparents, Andrew M. and Amanda
Crisp Bryson, with whom she went to live on Peaceful Cove when her
mother died in 1920. Also preceding her were her infant brother,
Andrew and her sister, Bonnie M. George; her daughter, Lolita H.
Williams and her son, Arvil L. Holland. She was a member of Pine
Grove Baptist Church. She drove a school bus for about twenty-five
years for Macon County Schools. She loved and was greatly loved
by her family.
Mrs. Holland
is survived by a daughter, Deloris H. Cook, and two sons, Landy
Holland and wife Elaine of Franklin, and Leo Holland and wife Helen
of North Pole, Alaska; son-in-law, Ray A. Williams of Anchorage,
Alaska; nine grandchildren, Renee Williams Leyland, Sabrieta Holland,
Shelly Holland, Robbie Holland, Tim Holland, Lester Holland, Gregg
Cook, Pam Cook Owens, and Landon Holland and nineteen great-grandchildren.
Other survivors include her sister, Jessie Marie M. Henson and three
special nieces, Sylvia George Osbon, Kathy Tankersley and Villa
H. Freeman.

will be held Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at 4:30 PM in the Chapel of
Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Greg Rogers, Rev. John Rogers
and Rev. Mike Chastain officiating. Burial will be in the Sugarfork

James Leroy Holland, age 69 of Franklin, NC passed away Saturday,
September 24, 2011 in a Jackson County Nursing Home. Born in Cherokee
County, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Kerma and Mavis
Young Holland. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army; an avid musician
and was of the Baptist faith. He was a long haul truck driver and
was an off-shore well driller.
He is survived
by two daughters, Teresa Holland and Angie Holland both of Waterford,
MI; one son, Jimmy Holland of Waterford, MI; four sisters, Janet
Holland, Kathy Moffitt and husband Don, Loretta Holland and Shelby
Holland all of Franklin, NC; two brothers, Ronnie and Phillip Holland
both of Franklin, NC; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers Wade Holland, Gilbert
Holland and Michael Holland.

four granddaughters, Ashley and Sara Holland, Angel Ward and Madison

- Hattie Othel Holloway, age 82, of Highlands, NC passed away Saturday,
August 4, 2012 at an Asheville hospital. She was born in Hillsborough
County, FL the daughter of the late Henry Holland and Hattie Cooper
Tyler. She was the youngest of nine children and her main joy in
her life was her grandchildren who called her Mom Mom. She loved
to sew, loved meeting new friends and traveling with her husband
to different jobs all over the country. She had worked as a legal
secretary and was a member of Highlands First Baptist Church.
She is survived
by her husband of 60 years, Frank Harris Holloway; her daughter,
Lisa Maselli and her husband John of Evans, GA; two sons, Lamar
Brown and his wife, Malinda of Hampton, SC and Rick Holloway and
his wife Carolyn of Tomball, TX; one sister, Thelma Glattli of Highlands,
NC; four grandchildren, Anthony Maselli, Angela Maselli, Tyler Holloway
and Leigh Anna Brown.
Funeral services
will be held Friday, August 10 at 11:00 AM at the Highlands First
Baptist Church with Dr. Charles H. Harris officiating. Lamar Brown,
Rick Holloway, Anthony Maselli, Tyler Holloway, Joe Simmons and

passed away Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital.
He was a native of Dothan, Alabama, and resided in the Pine Creek
Community. He was the son of the late Dan and Cubie Corrnett Holmes.
He was a member of the National Guard also a cabinet maker and attended
Pine Creek Baptist Church.
He is survived
by his wife of 54 years, Helen Freda Crawford Holmes; two daughters,
Tina Marie Coggins of Cashiers, NC and Roma Ann Rogers of Pine Creek;
a son, Phillip Adrian Holmes of Pine Creek; a sister, Kathrine Alexander
Baxter of Bonifay, FL; a half sister, Nerva Shuman; six grandchildren,
and nine great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death
by a brother, Joe Dan Holmes.

She

son, Joey Lee Holt, all of Franklin. She is also survived by one
brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Wanda Mason of Franklin. Surviving

Kainen and Kelsie Bryant, one great-grandchild, Haylee Leddford,
two nephews, Jacky Mason of Franklin and Chet Barlow of Morganton,

Ron Swanson, and Sharon and her husband, Randy Anderson all of Franklin,
NC; one son, Richard Hood and his wife, Mirna of Guatamala, CA;
three sisters, Martha Miller of High Hill, MO, Betty Lauer of Franklin,
NC and Virginia West of Albany, GA; four brothers, George Bowen
of St. Ann Missouri, Walter Bowen of Heber Springs, AK, Frank Bowen

L. Hooper
Waynesville
- Dr. Robert L. Hooper, age 74 of Waynesville, passed away January
17, 2012 at Medwest Haywood Hospital.
He was born
in Haywood County to the late Leslie B. and Gertie Bumgarner Hooper.
Dr. Hooper graduated from Waynesville Township High School in 1955,
Wake Forest University in 1959, Bowman Gray Medical School in 1964,
and completed his internship and residency at Brooke General Hospital
in San Antonio TX in 1968. He served in the US Army as a radiologist
and worked at the 85th Evacuation Hospital during the Vietnam War.
He then practiced medicine as a radiologist at the following hospitals:
CJ Harris in Sylva, Swain County in Bryson City, Cherokee Indian
Hospital in Cherokee, District Memorial in Andrews, Highlands-Cashiers
in Highlands, and Haywood County Hospital in Waynesville. Dr. Hooper
was an active member of his church, where he served as a Deacon,
Sunday School Teacher, Superintendent of Sunday School, and as a
member of the choir.
Left to cherish
his memory is his wife Freda Breece Hooper of Waynesville; son John
D. Hooper and his wife Delane of Winston Salem; daughter Daphne
H. Buchanan of Waynesville; sister Regina H. Cable and her husband
Bob of Waynesville; grandchildren Ross H. Buchanan, Morgan A. Buchanan,
Austin G. Hooper and Lauren E. Hooper.
Funeral Services
will be held at 4:30PM on Friday January 20, 2012 at Grandview Baptist
Church, where Dr. Hooper will be placed in state at 3PM. The family

September 18, 2008 at his mountain home after an extended battle
with lung cancer. He was well loved and was surrounded by his family

The Highlands Art Walk, Highlands Chamber Activities, and The Highlands
Dog Show (Paws In the Park). He was also a member of the Mirror
Lake Association.

David "Jay" Hopkins, age 92, of Brendle Rd., Franklin,
NC passed away Thursday, April 21, 2011 in a local hospital. A native
of Macon County, he was the son of the late Sam and Mattie Sorrells
Hopkins. He was married first to Margie Sanders Hopkins who died
in 1982 and then to Maude Mary Brendle Hopkins who died in 2009.
He worked for Macon County Supply for forty-seven years as a sales
and delivery person. He was a member of Watauga Baptist Church where
he was former treasurer and oldest deacon.
He is survived
by two sisters, Etta Tallent of Franklin, NC and Lucille Potts of
Greenville, SC. Several nieces and nephews as well as great and
great-great nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in
death by one sister, Mary Wilson and five brothers, Ed, Howard,
Ralph, Ernest and Avery Hopkins.
Funeral services
will be held Monday, April 25, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Watauga Baptist
Church with Rev. Wesley Price and Rev. Vic Greene officiating. Burial

away in 1980, and is survived by her second husband,, of 24 years,

Van Raalte, and was the oldest member of Watauga Baptist Church,
where she was a former choir member.
In
addition to her husband, she is survived by a by a number of nieces
and nephews. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Bessie Beeco,
Minnie Clayton, Vinnie Brendle and Mattie Fouts and seven brothers,
J. B., Frank, Fred, Wiley, Dee, Robert and Barnard Brendle.

for Rhodes Paving, Taylor-Murphy Construction and Desoto Trail Trucking

and American Legion Post #108.

She is survived
by three daughters, Arlenea Chapa, Ruth Taylor and husband Howard
and Edna Hornbuckle and companion Richard Teesatsskie all of Cherokee,
NC; step daughter, Leighann Hornbuckle and companion Bobby Brady
of Cherokee, NC; six sisters, Wahnetah Stamper and husband Ned,
Carol Bernhisel, Violet Lee, Sybil Ledford, Arlena Lanning and husband
Bob, all of Cherokee, NC, and Lois Swanson of Virginia; four brothers,
Tony Bernhisel and wife Sue, Joe Bernhisel and wife Lotta, Walter
Bernhisel and wife Sarah all of Cherokee, NC, and Edward Bernhisel
of Florida; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild also survives.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother,
Bud Bernhisel and a grandson, Mario Bernhisel.
Funeral services
will be held Wednesday, October 10th at 2:00 pm at Yellow Hill Baptist
Church, with Rev. James Bo Parrish officiating. Burial will be in
the Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers
will be Joseph Toinetta, Kyle Chapa, John Toinetta, Antonio Bernhisel,
Chad Bernhisel and Howard Taylor. The family will receive friends
beginning at 6:00 pm Tuesday at the Church. .

Boyde Horton, Jr., age 85, of Franklin, NC passed away Thursday,
December 29, 2011. Born in Raleigh, NC, he was the son of the late
Exum Boyde Horton Sr. and Mary Fleming Horton. He was married to
Victoria Elizabeth Adams Horton for 40 years. He grew up in Chapel
Hill, NC where he attended Chapel Hill High School. He was a graduate
of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he received
a degree in electrical engineering. He was a veteran of both the
Second World War and the Korean Conflict. He retired from AT&T
and Western Electric where he worked as an electrical engineer.
He loved electronics, flying, and loved to travel.
In addition
to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mary Yardley of Silver
City, NM and Amy Johnson of Panther Creek, NC; three sons, Roger
E. Johnson of Fletcher, NC, Neil Johnson of Greensboro, NC and Artemus
Autlav of Franklin, NC; seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Johnson.
A memorial service
will be held at a later date at his residence.

the son of Jane Talley Houston of Highlands, NC and the late John

and loved to hunt and fish.

to his mother he is survived by three brothers, Stanley Houston
and wife Angie, Stacy Houston, and Scott Houston all of Highlands,

NC passed away Thursday, February 9, 2012. A native of Macon County,
he was the son of the late Melvin and Lillie Belle Ballew Houston.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during WWII.
He was a member and Quarter Master of Franklin VFW Post #7339.
He is survived
by two daughters, Sharon Grist of Tifton, GA and Dianne Van Valkenburg
of Kennesaw, GA; one son, Lawton Houston of Cashiers, NC; one sister,
Ruby Woodring of Franklin, NC; and one brother, Kelly Houston of
Marietta, GA. Six grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Marie Moss, Edith Dendy,
Hallie Moses and Nonie Hooper and one brother, Harley Houston.
Funeral services
will be held Sunday, February 12, 2012 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel
of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Alton Dendy officiating.
Burial will be in Sugarfork Baptist Church Cemetery. Franklin VFW

Sunday, March 13, 2011 at a local nursing home. She was a life-long
native of Macon County, the daughter of the late Thomas Houston
Barnes and Annie Mae Alexander Barnes. She was married to Hillard
Houston who passed away in 1993. She was an assembly worker for
Burlington Industry and was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church.
She was active in the old Macon County Rescue Squad. She was a loving
mother and grandmother and she loved to garden, crochet and cook
for her family.
She
is survived by a daughter, Annie Mae Guy and husband, Joe of Franklin,
NC. Four grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild
also survive. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Frances Kay
Houston and eight brothers.
Funeral
services will be held Friday, March 18 at 11:00AM in the Chapel
of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Rodney Guy, Rev. Paul Hill,
and Rev. Joe Guy officiating. Burial will be held at Longview Baptist

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Johnny Bishop, who
passed away in 1982, and her second husband, Ed Huffman, who passed
away in 2005. She was a homemaker and a faithful member of Zion
Hill Baptish Church, where she was a former Sunday School Teacher.
She is survived
by one daughter, Edwina Deas and her husband Cecil of Franklin.
NC; two sons, Dewight Bishop and his wife Janie of Canton, GA and
Rodney Bishop and his wife Tara of Harlem, GA. Sixteen grandchildren
and sixteen great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in
death by two sons, Lee Bishop and Ricky Bishop, and a daughter,
Mary Alice.

Veteran during WWII and received a Purple Heart. Mr. Hughes was
a retired Master Carpenter and a member of First baptist Church
in West Palm Beach, FL.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Goins Hughes, a
daughter Patsy Lee Hughes Carter and a sister Marie Parker.
Surviving is one son, Rod Hughes and his wife Louise, four grandchildren,
Amy Stewart anad her husband Steve,Jennie Holbrooks, Katie Hughes

Allena Singleton Hunter, age 93, of Belle Dowdle Road, Franklin,
NC passed away Friday, November 21, 2008 at a local hospital. She
was born in Rabun County, GA, the daughter of the late Robert Russell
and Elizabeth Williams Singleton. She was married to the late Thomas
Hudson Hunter who passed away in 1968. She was a homemaker and was
a faithful member of Prentiss Baptist Church. She was a former member
of the Home Demonstration Club and one of the first graduates of
Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School. She enjoyed cooking, especially her
family.
She
is survived by three daughters, Nancy Carol Hunter Tallent and her
husband Wayne of Charleston, SC, June Darlene Hunter of Sandy Springs,
Ga and Dinah Hunter Bishop of Franklin, NC; six sons, Thomas R.
Hunter of Franklin, NC, James Robert Hunter and his wife Margaret
of Dacula, GA, Alvin Edison Hunter and his wife, Gracie of Seneca,
SC, Frank Richard Hunter and his wife Sue of Franklin, NC, Walter
Charles Hunter and his wife Terri of Franklin, NC and David Allen
Hunter of Franklin, NC. Twenty grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren
and three great-great-grandchildren.
She
was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Elizabeth Hunter Reynolds
who passed away in 1984, one sister, Belle Singleton Ledford; three
brothers, Robert Singleton, Alexander Singleton and Faye Singleton.
Funeral
services will be held Sunday, November 23 at 3:00PM in the Chapel
of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Randy Drinnon and Rev. Michael
McMahan officiating. Burial will be at Prentiss Baptist Church Cemetery.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The
family will receive friends Sunday, November 23 from 2:00-3:00PM
at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home.

Lyndal
Stagner Hunter
Franklin,
NC - Lyndal Stagner Hunter, passed on July 10, 2009. Lyndal was
born February 6, 1916 in Grove Town, Georgia, where she grew up
on the family farm. She enlisted in the Navy following Pearl Harbor.
Upon being discharged from the navy she moved to Miami, Florida.
She married Frank Stagner and was the mother of Frances Kelly and
Judy Stagner of Miami. Lyndal was the grandmother of Lyndal Bardin,
Canton, Georgia, Tommy Kelly, Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Kyle Kelly,
Miami, Florida. She was the great-grandmother of Trent and Kaitlyn
Bardin.
Lyndal
summered in Franklin from 1962 at Echo Valley and south Skeenah.
She retired to Patton Valley in 1980. She married John Hunter in
2000 and was a member of the Louisa Chapel United Methodist Church.
A
memorial service will be held July 24, 2009 at 5:00pm at Louisa
Chapel United Methodist Church, 470 Louisa Chapel Road, Franklin,
NC.

Agnes Setser
Hunton
Greenwood SC
- Agnes Setser Hunton, 81, wife of the late Dr. Richard E. Hunton,
died January 29, 2012, at Hospice House in Greenwood. Born
in Franklin, NC, she was the daughter of the late Gilmer and Nina
Setser. She was a Registered Nurse and graduate of the Mission Memorial
Hospital Nursing program in Asheville, NC. She attended East Side
Baptist Church in Greenwood.
Surviving are
a daughter, Jenifer Diachenko and husband, Steve, of Taylors; and
a son, Richard E. Hunton, Jr. and wife, Cynthia of Columbia; brother,
Richard Setser; sisters, Grace Harrison, Jean Wilson, Anna House,
and Helen Gent; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services
will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Blyth Funeral Home
Chapel, with Rev. David Thomasson of East Side Baptist Church officiating.
Private family burial will be in Oakbrook Memorial Park. Pallbearers
will be Richard Hunton, Jr., Steve Diachenko, Richard Setser, Reubin
Diachenko, Ian Diachenko and Richard Hunton, III.
The family will
receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 to 2:00 Tuesday afternoon.
The family would

- Annie
Birdell Hurst, age 91, of Rose Creek Road, Franklin, NC passed away
Saturday, July 18, 2009 at a Haywood County Care Center. She was
a native of Macon County, the daughter of the late William Fred
and Eva Easter Houston Lowe. She was married to Manuel Ardell Hurst
who passed away in 1963. She was a homemaker and a member of Liberty
Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening and loved children.
She is survived
by four daughters, Sue Thompson and her husband, Bill of Austell,
GA, Frieda Corbin and her husband, Jim of Waynesville, NC, Bea McCracken
and her husband, Doyle of Dallas, GA and Barbara Post and her husband,
Larry of Austell, GA; two sons, Danny Hurst of Douglasville, GA
and Larry Hurst of Franklin, NC; one sister, Irene Ramsey of Franklin,
NC. Twenty-one grandchildren including Deby Woody of Franklin, NC,
twenty-eight great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren
also survive. She was preceded in death by a step-daughter, Irene
Dowdle; a daughter-in-law Pam Hurst; two sons, Fred Hurst and Lyndon
Hurst; two sisters, Cleo Mashburn and Ruth Robinson.
Funeral services
will be held, Tuesday, July 21 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant
Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Stevens and Rev. Alton Dendy officiating.
Burial will be at Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery. Kevin Woody,
Terry Post, Jamie Hurst, Nicholas Woody, Anthony Abrams and Billy
Norton will serve as pallbearers.
The family will

- Barbara Jean Hurst, age 62, of Franklin, NC, passed away Monday,
October 8, 2012. She was a native of Macon County, the daughter
of the late Junior and Pearl Russell Webb. She was a homemaker and
loving mother and grandmother. She loved to take pictures and spending
time with family, she was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived
by her husband of twenty years, John C. Hurst; a daughter, Selena
Lakey of Franklin, NC; two sons, John Webb and wife Jennifer of
Sylva, NC and Brannin Lakey, Jr. and wife Rebecca of Knoxville,
TN; five grandchildren, Daniel, Abigail, Kaitlyn, Noah, and Logan
also survive.
Funeral services
will be held Friday, October 12th at 2:00 pm at Zion Hill Baptist
Church with Rev. Eddie Stillwell officiating. Burial will be in
the Church Cemetery.
The family will
receive friends Friday one hour prior to the service at the Church.

Alicia Rae
Hyatt
Franklin, NC
- Beloved mother Alicia Rae Hyatt, 34, passed away in Otto, North
Carolina on April 21st 2012 due to complications of her health.
In her short years she had successfully fought off several rounds
of cancers, she has both won and lost against the battle of the
body. She was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist church of Franklin.
A native of
Macon County, she is survived by her adored daughter Andie Jolene
Muncey Hyatt, 15, her parents Ben and Patti Carpenter, sister and
brother Annette and Bennett Carpenter, and husband of 13 years Simon
Philip Hyatt. Successful
in education and work, her scholastics and career both cut short
by her health complications. She was of intuitive mind and a master
chef. She
was a lover of animals, and enjoyed spending times outdoors with
her pets and family.
Bryant-Grant
Funeral Home graciously is providing her wishes, there will be no
public services, and the family will take visitors personally.
The family has
asked that folks plant a tree in her memory, a memorial trust fund
has been setup to contribute to the collegiate education of her
teenage daughter, once her daughter completes college, the fund
will continue to support childrens education that lose a parent
during the High School year s.
