Highlands, NC
- Arnold Richmond Keener, age 85, passed away Thursday, October
11, 2012 at Highlands Cashiers Hospital. He was a native of Macon
County, the son of the late John Richmond and Bertha Zona Smith
Keener. He was a WWII Veteran of the US Army in Germany and was
a member of the Goldmine Baptist Church. He was a retired foreman
for the Town of Highlands Electrical Crew.
He is survived
by his wife of 59 years, Eunice Martin Keener, two sons, Grant Keener
and his wife, Martha of Franklin, NC and Alvin "Skip"
Keener and his wife, Ladonna of Highlands, NC; one brother, J.B.
Keener of Highlands, NC; five grandchildren, Wesley Keener, Brooklynn
Keener, Perrin Keener, Sarah Rutter and Matthew Keener and two great
grandchildren, Nathan Keener and Lilly Rutter . He was preceded
in death by a sister Della McCall.
Funeral services
will be held Saturday, October 13 at 2:00PM at the Highlands First
Baptist Church with Rev. Roy Lowe, Rev. Greg Rogers and Rev. Charles
Harris officiating. Burial will be held at Highlands Memorial Park.
Thad Watson, Varney Watson, Farrell Justice, Grover McCall, John
McCall, Weldon Keener, Ervin Keener and Wayne Justice will serve
as pallbearers.

- Hester
Hedden Keener, age 74, of Destin, FL formerly of Highlands, NC went
to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 27, 2012. Born May 24, 1938 in
Gneiss, NC, to the late Quince and Emma Stewart Hedden. She was
preceded in death by a son, Terry Dean a daughter, Renee Gwen,
and a brother, Dwight Quincy Hedden. She was a loving mother, grandmother,
great-grandmother and sister. She spent many years in both Highlands
and Destin working in real estate sales and home construction industries.
Her greatest enjoyment came from spending time with her family and
hand-crafting many beautiful quilts.
She is survived
by a son, Don and wife Nancy of Destin, FL; three granddaughters,
Brandy Keener Highsmith of Atlanta, Georgia, Kalee Renee Keener
and Paige Marion Keener of Destin, FL; one great-grandson, Simeon
Highsmith of Atlanta, Georgia. Her sisters, Barbara Ledford of Franklin,
NC, June Hedden of Lilburn, GA, Mary Keener of Highlands, NC, Shelba
McFarland of Virginia Beach, VA, Helen Justice of Hendersonville,
NC, Alice Lee of Powell, TN and Hope Calloway of Cullowhee, NC.
Funeral services
will be held Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 2:00 pm at Yellow Mountain
Baptist Church, with Rev. Andy Cloer and Rev. Keith Ashe officiating.
Burial will be in Stewart Cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 till 2:00 pm Saturday,
one hour prior to the service at the Church.

Newton Keener
Highlands, NC - Isaac Newton Keener, age 88, of Perquin Road, Highlands,
NC passed away Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at his residence. He was
a native of Macon County, the son of the late Isaac N. and Martha
Calloway Keener. He was married to Emma Louise Henry Keener who
passed away in 1993. He was a US Army Veteran of WWII. He was a
carpenter and was of the Baptist faith.
He
is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Munger of Highlands, NC and
Peggy Lee Reese of Herndon, VA; two sons, Tony Keener of Enterprise,
AL and Michael N. Keener of Highlands, NC; two sisters, Myrtle Macky
of Franklin, NC and Maggie Gaynor of New Port Richey, FL. Eleven
grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral
services will be held Saturday, May 16 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel
of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home in Highlands with Rev. Walter Wilson
and Rev. Everett Brewer officiating. Christoper Reese, Jason Reese,
David Reese, Joseph Keener, Justin Odom, and Jeff Munger will serve
as pallbearers. Burial will be at Highlands Memorial Park.
The
American Legion Post #108 and Franklin VFW Post #7339 will conduct
complete military graveside rites.
The

passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2011 in a local nursing center.
Born in Jackson County, she was the daughter of Tommy Watts of Clayton,
GA and Sandra Cabe Shepherd and her husband, Dale of Franklin, NC.
She was married to Rickie Keener. She was a CNA at Britthaven Nursing
Home. Melissa was a loving wife and mother; she liked to do needlework;
loved meeting people and everyone loved her. She attended Franklin
Church of God.
In
addition to her parents and husband, she is survived by one son
Brandon Keener of Franklin, NC; one sister, Melinda Watts of Franklin,
NC and maternal grandfather, Buster Cabe of Franklin, NC. She was
preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Faye Cabe and paternal
grandparents, Fred and Ruth Watts.
Funeral
services will be held Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Franklin
Church of God with Rev. Richard Davis, Rev. Eugene Moore, Rev. Danny
Peterson and Terry Cabe officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn

Mason Hastings Keener
Franklin,
NC - Sarah Mason Hastings Keener, age 83, of Clayton, Georgia, formerly
of Franklin, passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2011 in a Stephens
County hospital. She was a native of Rabun County, the daughter
of the late Dan and Ida Hastings Mason. She was married first to
Frank Hastings, who died in 1977 and second to Jesse Roscoe Keener
for 31 years. She had worked at Burlington Mills as an Inspector.
She was a member of Black Rock Baptist Church, and liked to play
guitar and sing. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
In
addition to her husband, she is survived by five daughters, Sue
Worley and Tony of Clayton, GA, Dale McConnell and Lee of Franklin,
NC, Cathy Tippett and Bryan, Alice Bradley and Mike and Marilyn
Hastings all of Otto, NC; two sons, Harvey Hastings of Franklin,
NC and Sam Hastings and Debra of Clarksville, GA; a step-daughter,
Wanda K. Bleckley and Nathan of Clayton, GA; one brother, Frank
Mason of Franklin, NC; eighteen grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren
and one great-great-grandchild also survives.
Funeral
services will be held Sunday, April 3rd at 2:00 pm at Pleasant Hill
Baptist Church, with Rev. Phillip Cochran, Rev. Jim Green, and Rev.
David Hastings officiating. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery.

Evelyn
Carlson Kent
Highlands/Sarasota
- Evelyn Carlson Kent, of Sarasota, Fla., went to be with her Lord
on Sept. 12, 2010, in Highlands, N.C., at the age of 85. At
her side was Wendel, her husband of 59 years.
Evelyn
expressed her joy in Gods Creation through her gardens, which
she lovingly designed, planted and tended at their home in Sarasota
and at their summer home in Highlands.
She
was born Sept. 7, 1925, in Gilmore, Fla., a small fishing community
on the St. Johns River, to Edward and Tina Carlson, who had immigrated
from Scandinavia. She
grew up during the Great Depression in St. Petersburg, Fla., where
she graduated from St. Petersburg High School. The first of her
family to attend college, she earned her bachelors and masters
degrees at Cornell University. She was assistant dean of women at
Salem College, Winston-Salem, N.C., from 1949 to 1951.
Evelyn
and Wendel, who met at Cornell in 1946, were married in 1951 in
St. Petersburg. They spent their early married years in Champaign,
Ill. In 1959 they moved to Sarasota, where they raised their three
sons. After their children were grown, Evelyn, a lifelong gardener,
entered the floral business, owning and operating Hillview Flowers
and Greenery, Sarasota, for many years, during which she expanded
the business with outlets on St. Armands Circle and in Boca
Grande.
She was proud of her Norwegian heritage. She led her family to Norway
in 1973 to restore her grandfathers farmhouse, which had passed
to her, in the hamlet Kvestad. After
retirement she devoted her full attention to her gardens.
She
was a founding member of Siesta Key Chapel, Sarasota.
Surviving
are: her husband, Wendel; her sons, Stephen (Sara), Peter (Francine),
and Richard; her granddaughters, Melissa Morrill, Skye Kent, Emily
Kent and Wendy Kent; her niece, Sally Lock; and her nephews, David
Twardock, Robert Twardock and Paul Twardock. She
was predeceased by her sister, Elena Carlson Benedict.
Visitation
will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 17, at Toale Brothers Funeral
Home, 40 N. Orange Ave., Sarasota. Funeral service will be at 2:30
p.m., Saturday, Sept. 18, at Siesta Key Chapel.
In
lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Florida programs
of the Nature Conservancy, 222 S. Westmonte Dr., Ste. 300, Altamonte
Springs, FL 32714.

Topton, NC - Coy Killian Kerr, age 40, of Concord, NC, passed away
Sunday, December 28, 2008. He was a native of Los Angeles, CA, but
had lived most of his life in North Carolina. He was the son of
Weldon and Betty Lee Duvall Kerr of Topton, NC. He was a pipefitter
for A-1 Fire Control, and was a US Army Veteran, having served in
the 82nd Airborne.
In
addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Albert Kerr
and his wife Angela of Andrews, NC; a half brother, Robert H. Wood
of Aquone, NC and five nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death
by a half brother, James Wood and one nephew.
Funeral
services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 31st at 1:00pm in the Townson-Rose
Funeral Home Chapel in Andrews. Burial will be at Aquone Baptist
Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 1:00pm,

also survive. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Irene Mlakar
and Dorothy Kerzic.

She was a retail manager for The Avenue Ladies Store; was on the
Board of Directors of The Macon County Humane Society; volunteered
at The Macon County Humane Society Thrift Store and was a member
of ASPCA. Karen was a true animal lover.
She is survived
by her closest friend, Holly Rugg of Franklin, NC; one brother,
Kurt Keyser and wife Kathy of Virginia Beach, VA; one niece and
four nephews.

- James Ezra Kirk, Jr., age 85, of Hayesville, NC passed away Saturday,
October 15, 2011 at his residence. He was born in Toledo, Ohio,
the son of the late James E. Kirk, Sr and Josephine Kness Kirk.
He was a WWII Veteran of the US Navy. He was a salesman for chemical
industries. Mr. Kirk was a member of the Hayesville First United
Methodist Church, a member of the Scottish Rite and a member of
Toledo Ft. Industry Lodge # 144. He loved boating and fishing. He
was very active in the Chatuge Village Association.
He is survived
by his wife of 61 years, Carol Ritzman Kirk; his daughter, Patricia
Ann Beumel and her husband, Nicholas of Toledo, OH; his son, James
E. Kirk III and his wife, Janice of Swanton, OH and his granddaughter,
Amy Katherine Lombarbi and her husband, Jeff of Columbus, OH.

of the late Grover and Leona Franklin Watson. She was married to
the late Glenn Thomas Kirkland. She was a homemaker and a member
of Yellow Mountain Baptist Church. She worked at High Hampton Inn
and Cashiers sewing plant. She loved gardening and crafts.
She
is survived by her two daughters, Diane Bryson Moss and her husband
John of Yellow Mtn., NC and Laqueta Krikland Childers and her husband,
Dennis of Salem, SC; two sons, Wayne Fred Bryson and Keater Kirkland
both of Yellow Mtn., NC; one brother, Ira Grover Watson and his
wife Aileen of Gastonia, NC. Six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren
and one great-great-grandchild, Jaydon David Parris, that she didnt
get to know. She was preceded in death by two sons, David Lee Bryson
and Theron Thomas Kirkland; and one sister, Ina Watson.

three grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by a
sister, Gladys Stamey, and a brother Frank Kirkland.

William Edward
Kuipers, Jr
Wellington FL
/ Sapphire - William Edward Kuipers, Jr., of Wellington, Florida,
passed away at his summer home in Sapphire, North Carolina on Saturday,
August 1, 2009. Bill was 78 years old.
A long time
resident of Ridgewood, New Jersey, he graduated from Lehigh University
with a degree in Business Administration and Finance in 1952. He
entered the U. S. Army upon graduation and after serving for two
years in the Signal Corps, he was recruited by the IBM Corporation.
After a distinguished career with IBM, he joined the family business,
Haband Company, in 1964 as a principal and director.
In 1976, he
moved the family to the last working horse farm in residential Ridgewood,
New Jersey, where they bred thoroughbred horses. The small but picturesque
farm was a labor of love and source of great fulfillment.
He retired from
Haband in 1986 and moved to Wellington, Florida.
Bill was a man
known for his benevolence and many good deeds. He was on The Vestry
of St. Elizabeths Episcopal Church in Ridgewood for many years
and served as
Warden and Lay reader. He also served as Scout Master for Troop
7 in Ridgewood, where he had the privilege of helping both of his
sons achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. He was on the board of the
YWCA in Ridgewood. He supported numerous worthy charitable organizations
in New Jersey and Florida including the Valley Hospital Foundation.
An avid golfer,
he was a former member of Arcola Country Club in Paramus, NJ, and
Palm Beach Polo Golf and Country in Wellington, FL. He and his wife,
Amanda, recently joined the Wanderers Club in Wellington, FL and
The Country Club of SapphireValley
in Sapphire, North Carolina. He was a member of St. Peters
United Methodist Church in Wellington, FL.
He is survived
by his loving wife, Amanda Holloway Kuipers, and his children and
their families: William & Dawn Kuipers III of Haskell, NJ; John
& Cyd Kuipers of Jupiter, FL, and Marie & Ron Shepard of
Beulah, MI. He was very proud of his granddaughters, Allison, Jennifer
and Valerie Kuipers of Jupiter, FL.
The family requests
that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Palm Beach County,
5300 East Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL 33407 or Fishes and Loaves,c/o
Macon Bank, Hwy. 64 East, Cashiers, NC 28717.
