Ruth Virginia Nausbaum

Highlands, N.C. - Ruth Virginia Nausbaum, age 92, of Mayflower Drive, Highlands, NC, passed away Monday, May 5, 2008 at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital after a short illness. She was a native of Lakewood, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland, and the daughter of Harriett and Gustav Braun.

She was a neighbor, playmate and schoolmate of John Otto Nausbaum, whom she married in 1937. They were married for 71 years. During World War II, when Otto was in Europe, Ruth worked as a lathe operator making valves for war aircraft engines. She later became a sterling silver buyer for an exclusive gift shop in Cleveland. After retiring, she was a homemaker an exclusive gift shop in Cleveland. After retiring, she was a homemaker and dog handler in addition to gardener in the many homes she and Otto built, including two in central Mexico. She was also a very talented artist.

Ruth is survived by her husband John Otto Nausbaum, a niece from Tennessee, a niece and nephew from Ohio, and her extended family at Chestnut Hill of Highlands.

Maybelle Chastain Neely

Highlands, NC - Maybelle Chastain Neely, age 93, of Clear Creek Community, Highlands, NC passed away Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at Fidelia-Eckerd Nursing Home.

She was a native of Macon County, the daughter of the late David E. and Ada Bryson Chastain. She was married to the late James Philo Neely, who passed away in 1963. She was a homemaker, a loving mother and a granny to all. She loved to have visitors and loved gardening. She was a member of Clear Creek Baptist Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Kathryn Neely Vaughn and her husband, Randall of Grayson, GA; two sons, James Crawford Neely and Carl Edward Neely both of Highlands; one sister, Carrie Crain of Highlands; nine grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by a son, William Philo Neely, three sisters, and three brothers.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 17, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Clear Creek Baptist Church, with Rev. Zane Talley, Rev. Oliver Rice, Rev. Walter Wilson and Rev. Everett Brewer officiating.

Burial will be in the Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Darwin Vaughn, Derrick Vaughn, Dwayne Vaughn, Matthew Neely, Edison Neely, and Vaughn Neely. The family will receive friends Thursday, July 16th from 7:00-9:00 PM in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home in Highlands.

William Richard Nilsen

Franklin, NC - William Richard Nilsen, age 69, of Franklin, NC, and Melbourne, FL, passed away Monday, June29, 2009 in a local hospital. He was a native of Bronx, NY, the son of the late Hans and Christina Rich Nilsen. He was a retired Deputy Sherrif in Brevard County, FL, and a US Airforce Veteran. He attended Grace Bible Church in Mountain City, GA.

He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Carol Suzanne "Suzie" Roberts Nilsen, two daughters, Christina Davidson and her husband Kelly of Clearfield, Utah and Tracey LaGrange and her husband Michael of Hiedelberg, Germany; two sons, Michael Nilsen of Jacksonville, FL and Thomas Volk and his wife Ulku of Turkey; grandchildren, Aaron Harms, Kalin Sleeper, Whitney Chaney and Lindsey Nilsen; four great-grandchildren also survive.

Memorial services will be held at later date.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to MDS, PO Box 1648, Franklin, NC 28734.

Charles H. Noble, III

Glocester MA - Charles H. Noble, III, 67, Gloucester, Mass died on April 23, 2009 after a long battle with Cancer.

Mr. Noble attended Gloucester Public Schools and was a Graduate of The University Of Massachusetts with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1963. He was the only son of Charles Noble, Jr. and Jennie (Strescino) Noble of Gloucester, Massachusetts.

Mr. Noble began his career with MassMutual Financial in Springfield, Mass., and spent most of his career in Commercial Real Estate, eventually becoming President of IDS Financial Services and later an Executive Vice President with Eliot Bank in Boston. In 1992, Mr. Noble purchased The Hampton River Marina, Hampton, NH, which was later sold in 2004. He and his wife retired in Sarasota, Florida where he was an accomplished golfer and sailor.

Mr. Noble is survived by his wife Cheryl Burns-Noble, of Wenham, Mass and Cashiers, NC, his mother, two sons, Dr. Charles Noble IV, wife Dr. Stephanie Noble, Oxford, Miss., Mark Noble of Chicopee, Massachusetts, daughter Kristen Noble, Orlando, Florida and three grandchildren.

Services for Mr. Noble will be held at a later date in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

In lieu of flowers his family requests donations are made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice.

Iris Jane (IJ) Norman

Highlands - Iris Jane (IJ) Norman, age 97, of Highlands, NC, passed away Wednesday November 4, 2009 at Fidelia Eckert Nursing Home. She was born in Lockney, Texas, the daughter of the late John and Wilhemina Hassell Witherspoon. She was a registered nurse and a member of Broadway Church of Christ. She was a member of Professional Women's Society, while she served as Superintendent of Student Health Service at Texas Tech University.

She is survived by her daughter, Jane Lea Norman Sticka and her son in law Dale Sticka, and her Granddaughter Shannon P. Sticka all of Highlands, NC. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Athalee Genn and Lucille Freeman, a twin brother, D.J. Witherspoon, and brother Hack Witherspoon.

She spent most of her life in Lubbock and Dallas,Texas. Growing up during the Great Depression which made her a person who could work hard, but also a person who developed the grace and poise to run a hospital and also entertain royalty. Those that knew her were amazed by her presence and her ability to win you over quickly with her grace. Yes, she will be missed by all who knew her.

By her request, no services are planned, she believed in celebrating life not death. For those who would like to make a contribution to a cause she embraced, please acknowledge Highlands Cashiers Hospice and Friends for Life.

The family would like to take this time to praise both Fidelia Eckert and Highlands Cashiers Hospice where all went out of their way to aid and assist us during this difficult time. Life is fragile so live like there is no tomorrow, dance like no one is watching, laugh often, and help one another.

James Edward "Eddie" Norton

Franklin, NC - James Edward "Eddie" Norton, age 50, of Hatfield Road, Franklin, NC passed away Thursday, September 25, 2008 at his residence. He was born in Greenville, SC, the son of the late Carson Henry Norton and Doris Owens Norton of Easley, SC. He was a respiratory therapist at Angel Medical Center. He enjoyed playing music in a band and loved animals and gardening. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Rowena Abella Norton; one daughter, Alexandra Nicole Norton of the home; one son, Jaime Norton and his wife, Alicia of Franklin, NC; two sisters, Donna Finley and her husband Don of Kershaw, SC and Becky Franklin and her husband, Jerry of Greenwood, SC; two grandchildren, Tori and Ethan Norton. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He is also survived by his first wife, Debra Lynn Crosby Norton.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 27 at 11:30 AM at St. Francis of Assisi with Father Tien H. Duong officiating.

The family will receive friends after the service at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home from 2:00-3:00PM, Saturday, September 27.

Graveside services will be held Sunday, September 28 at 3:00 PM at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Easley, SC.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriner Children’s Hospital, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.

Maybur Henson Norton

Franklin, NC - Maybur Henson Norton, age 93, of Big Oak Drive, Franklin, NC, passed away Wednesday, December 3, 2008 in a local nursing home. She was a native of Macon County, the daughter of the late Lonnie and Ora Norris Henson. She was married to Paschal Norton, who passed away in 1976. She was a retired school teacher, she had taught school for 36 years in the Macon County School System. She was a former Pink Lady at Angel Hospital, a member of the Macon County Chapter of Retired Teachers Association, and a member of Asbury United Methodist Church. She attended First Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sons, Rick Norton and his wife Anita and David Norton and his wife Suzy all of Franklin, NC; two sisters, Helen Grant of Asheville, NC and Roberta Palmer of Goose Creek, SC; two brothers, Ralph Henson and Gilmer Henson both of Otto, NC; two grandchildren, Darryn Norton and Laura Norton; three step-grandchildren, Blake, Evan and Justin Harrell. She was preceded in death by a brother, Calvin Henson.

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 5th at 2:00pm in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home, with Rev. Guy Duvall officiating. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Darryn Norton,Blake Harrell, Evan Harrell, Justin Harrell, Scott Henson and Bud Henson.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00pm, Thursday evening at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to a favorite charity of one’s choice.
