Franklin -Antoniette I Pace age 93, of Franklin passed away Friday, May 23, 2008. She was born in Italy and was the daughter of the late Nicola and Angela Chariella Ianeilla.

Mrs Pace is survived by a sister, Parcellyzzi Maria of New York and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at 11:00 AM in the Gillespie Chapel Cemetery. Rev. Frank Rodriguez will officiate.

Mary Frances Parker

Cherokee, NC - Mary Frances Parker, age 59, of Cherokee, NC passed away Friday, March 26, 2010 in a Swain County Hospital. She was born in Macon County, the daughter of Charles Roy and Frances Cope Morgan. She was a homemaker and she loved gardening and working with plants.

She is survived by her best friend and companion of 17 years, Bud Culpepper; one daughter, Lorrie Owens of Mt. Vernon, Washington and one son, Dale Parker of Mt. Vernon, Washington; one sister, Wanda Lohr of Franklin, NC; four brothers, Bobby Morgan of Franklin, NC, Charles Morgan of Darrington, WA, Jamie Morgan of Franklin, NC and Jimmy Morgan ; one aunt, Bonnie Powell of Rockport, WA. Three grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 31 at 2:00PM in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Frank Rodriquez officiating. Burial will be at Watauga Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, March 30 from 6:00-8:00PM at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home.

Raymond "Toro" James Parks

Franklin, NC - Raymond "Toro" James Parks, age 72, of Gaston Street, Franklin, NC passed away Friday, November 20, 2009 at a local nursing home. He was born in DeKalb County, GA the son of the late Roscoe and Mildred Border Parks. He was Veteran of the US Army during the Korean conflict. He was retired from the Dekalb County School System. He loved playing golf.

He is survived by three sons, Raymond A. Parks of Atlanta, GA, Ricky Parks of Franklin, NC and Gerald Parks and his wife, Shirley of Franklin, NC; five sisters, Robbie Harris, Alice Jean Strickland, Dorothy Parks, and Rosa Mae Parks all of Atlanta, GA and Verna Johnson of Houston, TX; three brothers, Harvey Joe Parks, Milton Parks and Timmy Parks all of Atlanta, GA. Six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive.

No services are planned.

Shirley Ann Calloway Parks

Franklin, NC - Shirley Ann Calloway Parks, 64 of Franklin, NC died Saturday November 14, 2009 in Hendersonville, NC. She was a native of Spartanburg, SC, the daughter of the late James Qulin, and Ophelia Waters Calloway. She was a waitress, she loved cooking, young children, gospel singing, and attending church. She was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sons Daniel and Rickey Gibson both of Franklin, NC, one brother James L. Calloway of Swannanoa, NC, and one grandchild Sarah Danielle Gibson.

Funeral services will be 2:00pm, Tuesday, November 17, 2009 in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Evangelist James Calloway and Rev. Tommy Fouts officiating. Burial will be in Ridgecrest Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Paul Shuler, Michael Calloway, Joshua Flynn, Randy Berry, Dennis Messer, and Jerry Griffin. Franklin, NC - James Leroy Parrish, age 60, of Edgewood Avenue, Franklin, NC passed away Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at his residence. He was a native of Macon County, the son of James Ardell and Velda Lee Brendle Parrish. He ran an antique business at the Flea Market.

He is survived by his three daughters, Pamela Sue Chyba and her fiance’ Rick Rooker of Davison, MI, Angela Lynn Parrish of Clare, MI, Laura Lee Penrod and her husband, Mike of Davison, MI.; four sisters, Kathy Brooks of Waterford, MI, Beverly Black of Hazel Park, MI, Marcia Bowman and Sonya Greer; two brothers, Eddie And Jimmy Franklin of Franklin, NC; grandchildren, Lea Marie Caswell, Antoinette Elizabeth Caswell, Brandi Sue Bowen, Briana Marie Bowen, Jarred Ray James Parrish, Jacob Michael Penrod, Brittany Susan Parrish and Danielle Lynn Riggs; one great-grandchild, Grant Leroy Caswell; one aunt, Barbara Parrish.

Betty Lou Passmore

Franklin, NC - Betty Lou Passmore, age 69, of Franklin, NC died Saturday, November 21, 2009 in an Asheville, NC hospital. She was a native of Macon County, NC the daughter of the late Frank and Maybelle Williamson Cowart. She was a homemaker and loved cooking, sewing, and taking care of her children. She was Baptist by faith.

She is survived by her husband of fifty-four years, James Passmore; two sons, Tony Passmore and his wife Angie of Sylva, NC, Taburn Passmore of Franklin, NC; one sister, Dorothy Scott of Franklin; four brothers, Fred , Jesse, and Earl Cowart of Franklin, NC and Ralph Cowart of Otto, NC; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, J. B. Passmore and three brothers, R. L., Wiley and Junior Cowart.

Funeral services will be held Monday, November 23, 2009 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home, Franklin, NC with the Rev. Gary McCoy officiating. Burial will be in the Union United Methodist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Justin, Sonny, William, Jason, Jerry Passmore Jeff Clark, and Sammy Lee.

Daniel (Boone) Passmore

Franklin, NC - Daniel (Boone) Passmore, age 76, of Frazier Road, Franklin, NC, passed away Monday, January 11, 2010 at his residence. He was a native of Macon County, the son of the late Johnny Coleman Passmore and Elsie Palmer Passmore. He had worked for Cook Brothers Sawmill for thirty years, and was a member of Rose Creek Baptist Church. He loved repairing lawnmowers and weed eaters and splitting firewood.

He is survived by a sister, Ruby Haskett and husband Mitchell, of Lenoir, NC; three brothers, Henry Passmore and wife Roberta of Franklin, NC, Junior Passmore and wife Mary Ann of York, SC, and Ernest Passmore of Dandridge, Tennessee; a special niece Alice McCall and husband Keith of Franklin, NC; and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Janie Roberta Passmore, a son, Millard Coleman Passmore; two sisters, Myrtle Mae Passmore and Lola Belle Passmore; three brothers, Herman Passmore, Leonard Passmore, and Vance Woodrow Passmore.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 14th at 2:00pm in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home, with Rev. Frank Rodriguez and Rev. Greg Rogers officiating. Burial will be in Clarks Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Rick Passmore, Aaron Beaver, James Conley, James Guyer, John Crisp, Doug Shaver, and Steven Stanford.

Earnest Jackson Passmore

Franklin, NC - Earnest Jackson Passmore, of Dandridge, Tennessee, formerly of Franklin, NC, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, February 17, 2010 in a Knoxville, Tennessee hospital. He was a native of Macon County, the son of the late Johnnie Coleman and Elsie Palmer Passmore. He was a small engine mechanic and was a member of Greens Chapel Baptist Church. He loved music and playing music. He loved fishing, swimming and most of all he loved his God.

He is surivived by two daughters, Sharon R. Betzhold and her husband, Michael of Lawrenceville, GA and Lisa M. Passmore and her friend, Michael Smith of Franklin, NC; two sons, Ronald E. Passmore and his wife Margaret of Birmingham, AL and Tim Passmore and his wife, Jenny of Gulf Breeze, FL; one sister, Ruby Haskett of Lenoir, NC; two brothers, Henry Passmore of Franklin, NC and Junior Passmore of York, SC; ten grandchildren, Malarie, Lindsay, Amberlee, Brittany, Emily, Holly, Alex, D. J., Ryan and Jeremy. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lola Belle Passmore and Myrtle Mae Passmore; four brothers, Leonard, Herman, Vance and Daniel Passmore.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 20 at 2:30 in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Frank Rodriquez and Rev. Jack Green officiating. James (J. B.) Bronlowe Passmore

Franklin, NC - James (J. B.) Bronlowe Passmore, age 51, of Pannell Lane, Franklin, NC, passed away Thursday, June 19, 2008 at his residence. He was a native of Macon County, the son of James C. and Betty Cowart Passmore of Franklin, NC.

He had worked as a sales and service representative for Terminix. He was a Country Musician and formed the J. B. Passmore Band. He was a member of Cartoogechaye Church of God.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of ten years, Diane Spencer Passmore; one daughter, Tomeka Ammons and her husband, Greg of Franklin; two sons, Jamie Passmore and his wife Christy and Jason Passmore and his wife Eva all of Franklin, NC; two step-daughters, Summer Passmore and her husband Kevin of Franklin, NC and Kelly Scoggins of Orlando, FL; two brothers, Tony Passmore and his wife Angie of Sylva, NC and Taburn Passmore of Atlanta, GA; eighteen grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 23rd at 11:00am at Cartoogechaye Church of God, with Rev. Phillip Cochran officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Zion Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mike Wooten, Jerry Lowery, David McFalls, Kyle Edwards, Tracy Kilpatrick and Bobby Sherman.

  Evelyn “Lyn” Patton

Franklin, NC - Evelyn “Lyn” Patton, of Marietta, GA formerly of Franklin, NC passed away, Tuesday, June 1, 2010 in Marietta, GA. Born in Macon County, she was the daughter of J. L. and Evelyn Suttle West. She was a beloved wife, mother, “Meme” and devoted Atlanta Braves fan. She was a member of East Cobb United Methodist Church in Marietta, GA.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband of forty-three years, Jerry Patton; one daughter Alicia Reed and husband Chad of Marietta, GA, one son Jerry Lee Patton of Marietta, GA, one brother Lyle West and wife Charlene of Asheville, NC and two grandchildren Shelby and Wyatt Reed. She was preceded in death by a daughter Rebecca Lynn Patton and a sister Pat Cabe.

Services will be Saturday, June 5, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. at First United Methodist Church in Franklin, NC with Dr. John Fowler officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 A.M., Saturday, June 5, 2010 one hour prior to the service at First United Methodist Church.

Mary Lee Smith Peek

Greeneville, TN and Franklin, NC - Mary Lee Smith Peek, age 79 of Snapps Ferry Road, Greeneville, TN formerly of Franklin, NC passed away Sunday, February 10, 2008 at Takoma Regional Hospital in Greeneville, TN. She was born, July 14, 1927 in Toccoa, GA, the daughter of Lewis William and Alice Wood Smith. She was married to Bassil Medford Peek who died February 9, 1963. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. Her family stated that she was a loving mother and a great and caring grandmother. She will be missed greatly.

She is survived by her two special sons, Richard W. Peek and his wife, Shirley of Franklin, NC and Bobby Joe Peek and his wife, Sandra of Greeneville, TN; a special friend of the home, Cooper; a special sister, Ann Brown and her husband, Robert of Brevard, NC; her grandchildren, Tony Peek of New Market, TN, Doug and Michael Peek of Indiana, William and Raymond Tyree both of Greeneville, TN, Bonnie Blankenship of Kentucky, Darren Tyree of New Jersey, and Cindy Peek of Franklin, NC. Several nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren also survive. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence Smith.

Wayne Avery Pendergrass

Franklin, NC - Wayne Avery Pendergrass, age 85, of Franklin, NC passed away Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at a local hospital. He was a native of Macon County, the son of the late James Napoleon and Cora Hopper Pendergrass. He was married to Katherine Conley Pendergrass who passed away March 16, 2007. He was retired from the post office after 25 years of service, and was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church. He was a US Navy Veteran. He loved watching baseball. St. Louis Cardinals was his favorite team.

He is survived by two sons, Michael Alan Pendergrass and his wife, Connie of Franklin, NC and Donald Wayne Pendergrass and his wife, Judy of Franklin, NC; four grandchildren, Dustin Pendergrass, Travis Pendergrass and wife Michelle, Brett Pendergrass, and Amanda Bateman. He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held Friday, January 22nd at 2:00pm in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Keith Newell officiating. Burial will be in Carson Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mike Houston, Ross Shields, Hank Southard, Bruce Conley, Mark Reynolds. and Caleb Tallent. Billy Gerald Penland

Franklin, NC - Billy Gerald Penland, age 76, of E. Hickory Knoll Road, Franklin, NC passed away Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at his residence. He was a native of Macon County, the son of the late Lawrence S. and Gorda Stiles Penland. He was a Veteran of the US Navy during the Korean Conflict. He retired from General Motors in 1982 as a test driver. He was a member of the VFW Post #7339 and American Legion#108. He attended Hickory Knoll Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Sandra Brown Penland; three daughters, Robin Penland Barrick and her husband Moody of Sky Valley, GA, Denise Schooley and her husband, Alan of Franklin, NC and Jennifer B. Geffen of San Antonio, TX: three grandchildren, Jesse Muns IV, Billy K. Penland and Jodi Fisher ; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Virginia Watts of Franklin, NC. He was preceded in death by a brother, Hoyt Penland and son, Jeffery M. Brown.

Memorial services will be held Sunday, March 7 at 2:00 PM at the Gorda Ruth Chapel, 1206 East Hickory Knoll Road, Franklin, NC 28734.

The VFW Post #7339 and the American Legion Post 108 will conduct Military rites.

Reverend Wayne Clyde Penland

Franklin, NC - Reverend Wayne Clyde Penland, passed away Sunday, January 31, 2010. He was born June 10, 1915 in Towns County, GA, the son of John Burton Penland and Mary Jane Johnson Penland. He is survived by a daughter, Mary Gladys Taylor and two step-daughters, Lou Jean Trulove Phillips and Janice Trulove Henson and husband Doyle. Three grandchildren, Randy Taylor, Regina Taylor Creech and husband James, and Freda Taylor Brooks and husband Chuck. Six great-grandchldren; eight step-grandchildren; a number of step-great-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Miller Trulove Penland, grandson, David Taylor, step-grandson, Robert Sorrells, step-daughter, Mary Ann Trulove Sorrells, son-in-laws, Ralph Sorrells, Don Phillips, Dewey Taylor and step-great-grandson, Chris Sorrells; brother, Von Penland, sisters, Ethel Sims, Irene Kimsey Phillips, Ruby Corpening and Euel Penland also two special nepehws, Harold and Floyd Kimsey.

Wayne was the last of Burt and Mary’s six children. He was the oldest member of Mount Hope Baptist Church. He had served as assistant Pastor at Battle Branch Baptist Church in Clayton, GA. He had also taught Bible classes in several nursing homes in Georgia and North Carolina. He built chairs and stools for family and friends. Wayne loved riding and working with horses and made several trips with earlier Wagon trains. He also used horses logging timber in his younger days. He also did horse shoeing for himself and others.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 3rd at 2:00pm in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home, with Rev. Waymon Lunsford, Rev. Alton Dendy, and Rev. Charlie Bass officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Zion Cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 2:00pm, two hours prior to the service Wednesday, at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home.

  John Alexander Perdue

Cashiers - John Alexander Perdue, 85, of Cashiers, North Carolina, passed away August 29, 2008, after an extended illness.

A native of Montgomery, Alabama, he was a son of the late William Monroe and Ruth Gardner Perdue, and is predeceased also by his sister, Mary Perdue French, and brothers, William Monroe Perdue, Jr. and Howard Gardner Perdue.

Mr. Perdue is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rosalyn Sasser Perdue, of the home; sons John Alexander Perdue, Jr. (Diana) of Selma, Alabama, and Allyn Donald Perdue of Bluffton, South Carolina; daughter Angelyn Perdue Streyer (William-deceased) of Greenville, South Carolina; granddaughters Rosemary Perdue of Wetumpka, Alabama; Suzanne Perdue Widgeon (Wesley), of Eclectic, Alabama; Dr. Emily Streyer Carlisle (Eric) of Baltimore, Maryland; grandson, William Henderson Streyer of Madison, Wisconsin; step-granddaughter Rachael Annette Langley of Selma, Alabama; sisters-in-law Marilyn Sasser Allen of Eureka, California and Mary Faye Perdue of Montgomery, Alabama; great-granddaughter Alexandria Lee Williams, great-grandson Evan Jackson Williams, both of Eclectic, Alabama; step-great-grandsons Peyton and Adam Widgeon, also of Eclectic, Alabama, and a number of nieces and nephews.

He graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery, Alabama, and was a 1948 graduate of Auburn University in Building Construction. Mr. Perdue became a registered Professional Engineer and retired as Chief of Engineering Design Branch with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mobile, Alabama District, primarily designing locks and dams. Following his retirement, he was a structural engineering consultant traveling to foreign countries in this capacity. A thirty-six-year resident of Mobile, he was a member of the Cottage Hill Civitan Club, Skyline Country Club, Bienville Club, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and United Methodist Church.
John Perdue served his country for four years during World War II in the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Navy Achievement Medal and Air Medals with four gold stars in recognition for his service as a radar operator and turret gunner with Marine Air Corps Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron VMD-254. Their most hazardous mission was to photograph heavily-fortified Truk Lagoon without escort. The images yielded critical mapping data which assisted the U.S. Navy with Operation Hailstone, a massive assault on the Japanese Navy, which was a major turning point in the war.

Mr. Perdue was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Marine Corps League Smoky Mountain Detachment 973. During his seventeen-year residency in Jackson County, North Carolina, Mr. Perdue volunteered with Meals on Wheels, as well as being a long-time volunteer at the Highlands-Cashiers Hospital and The Highlands-Cashiers Hospital Foundation.

A military memorial service will be held at a later date.

Katherine Long Perry

Franklin, NC - Katherine Long Perry, age 84, of Porter Street, Franklin, NC, passed away Wednesday, February 18, 2009 in an Asheville hospital. She was a native of the Prentiss Community of Macon County, the daughter of the late Erwin Wesley Long and Zoah Dowdle Long. She was married for 49 years to Victor Horn Perry, who passed away in 1997. She retired from the Social Studies Department of Franklin High School after a long career of teaching. She spent the War years at Women’s College of Greensboro, NC, then returned to Franklin in 1946 to begin teaching. She then married Victor Horn Perry. After retirement she helped her husband manage Perry’s Drug Store. She was a member of the Retired Teachers of Macon County, a Charter and longest living member of Ladies Auxilliary of the Franklin VFW. She was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church, and served as treasurer of the Wesleyan Sunday School Class. She was a Charter member of Macon County Historical Society and spent many hours preparing "Macon County Heritage’ for publishing. She served as a volunteer and Board Member of the Society as long as her health permitted.

She is survived by two daughters, Martha Tallent and her husband Douglas of Asheville, NC, Carolyn Perry Burst and her husband Joseph of Knoxville, TN; one son, Victor Horn Perry, Jr.,and his wife Margaret of Franklin, NC; one sister, Carolyn Long Stephens of Lumberton, NC; five grandchildren, Joshua and Joseph Tallent of Asheville, NC, Winton Burst of Knoxville, TN, Miranda Manley and Erin Kimsey both of Franklin, NC. Three nieces, Carolyn Watson of Red Springs, NC, Beth Nicholson and Susie Perry Ledford both of Franklin, NC, Special caregiver and friend, Violet Pannell. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Jane Perry Rollow and a brother, Elmo Long.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 21st at 3:00pm at First United Methodist Church, with Dr. John Fowler officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Josh Tallent, Joseph Tallent, Winton Burst, Adam Nicholson, Andrew Nicholson, and Rocky Pattillo.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3:00, prior to the service Saturday at the Church.

Harold R. Pickens

Franklin - Harold R. Pickens, age 71, of Piney Grove Road , Franklin, NC, passed away Sunday, June21, 2009, in an Asheville Hospital. He was a native of Macon County, the son of the late Marvin and Edith Hurst Pickens. Mr. Pickens was a retired businessman, He was co-owner of Franklin Discount Furniture, Franklin Discount Carpet and North End Chevron.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Judy Miller Pickens, two sisters Lucille McCall and her husband Ken, and Kathy Rogers and her husband Michael of Franklin.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, June 23rd, in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with the Revs. David Powell and Lloyd Fish officiating. Burial will be in Cowee Baptist Church Cemetery. Rick Tallent, Randy McCall, Rusty McCoy, Edwin Grant, Jerry McCall and Shane Ramey will be pallbearers. George Stanley Picklesimer

Highlands -George Stanley Picklesimer 51, of Cumming, GA formerly of Highlands passed away Friday, February 5, 2010 in Cumming. He was a native of Macon County and a son of the late JohnL. and Bertha Owens Picklesimer.

Surviving is a sister Kathy Bale of Franklin, one brother John Picklesimer of Cumming GA. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday Feb. 7, 2010 at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Rusty Wolfery officiating.

Howard Pierce

Franklin - Howard Pierce, age 97, of Kingwood Circle, Franklin, NC, passed away Friday, January 15, 2010 at his residence.  He was a native of Portland, Oregon, the son of the late Charles Norton Pierce and Alberta Jameson Pierce.  He served in the Merchants Marine during World War II, and was a lifetime member of the American Legion.  He was a carpenter and had made mach-ups for North American Aircraft Manufacturing.  He was Catholic but attended the Methodist Church.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by a daughter, June Hunter and husband, Joseph Ripley of Franklin, NC; a son, James Pierce of Duvall, Washington, step-son, Kirk Babcock of Missman, Idaho; Twelve grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren also survive.

Joseph Richard Pierce

Otto, NC - Joseph Richard Pierce, age 67, of Coweeta River Lane, Otto, NC passed away Sunday, August 24, 2008 at a local hospital. He was born in Warren County, NJ, the son of the late Joseph A. and Appolenia Feltes Pierce. He was a security guard and culinary worker for Wildcat Cliffs Country Club. He enjoyed traveling, camping and photography.

He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Lynne Wallace Pierce; a sister, Joan Castner of Enola, PA; two brothers, John Pierce of California and William Pierce of Anchorange, Alaska.

Highlands, NC - Stephen Hart Pierce, 58, died April 1, 2008 at his home.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Sterling Blackwell Pierce and Josephine Hobart Pierce. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Sterling and Marjorie Pierce of Mount Olive, N.C. and Blowing Rock, N.C., one nephew, one niece and his partner of twenty-five years, Jeremy Wilcox Carroll.

Robert Thomas Pillifant

Franklin, NC - Robert Thomas Pillifant, Jr., 54, of East Sunset Road, Franklin, NC, passed away Monday, Sept. 8, 2008 at a local hospital. He was a native of Dade Co., FL, the son of the late Robert Thomas Pillifant, Sr. and Ruby M. Phillips Pillifant. He was a carpenter, and a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Jung Woo Chang Pillifant; one daughter, Laurel Pillifant of Franklin, NC; one son, Richard Thomas Pillifant of Franklin, NC; one sister, Regina Fowler of Gainesville, FL.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 11th at 4:00pm at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, with Father Tien Duong officiating. Pallbearers will be Stacy Keener, Doug Keener, Ronnie Fowler, Danie Dills, Boomer Keener, and Morlan Bowman.

Franklin, NC - Phillip Olan Pittman, age 58, of Rainbow Springs Road, Franklin, NC passed away Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at an Asheville Hospital. He was born in Avery County, NC, the son of the late Oscar L. and Hattie Carlton Buchanan Pittman. He served 8 years in the US Airforce and served in Vietnam during 1969 and 1970. He was a Church Sexton for the First United Methodist Church. He enjoyed his work at the Church and the many friends he met. Phillip was a loving father and grandfather. He was a member of Mtn. Leland Phythyon

Franklin - Leland Phythyon, age 92, of Carl Slagle Road, died Sunday, February 8, 2008 in a Franklin, NC, Nursing Home. He was a native of Westmorland County, PA, the son of the late James and Emily Maude Molton Phythyon. He was married to the late Ann Naylor Phythyon who died in 1992. He worked for U. S. Steel for 39 years. He loved woodworking, and building houses. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was of the Methodist faith.

He is survived by two sons, Jay Phythyon of New Hope, PA , and Jim Phythyon and his wife Ginger of Franklin, NC. Grandchildren, Lynne Kiser, and Dan Phythyon, great-grandchildren Alex, Natalie and Emory Kiser, and J. D. Phythyon. He was preceded in death by one sister and four brothers.

Memorial services will be at 2 PM Wed. Feb. 11, 2009 at Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Keith Newell officiating.

Steven Polan

Franklin, NC - Steven Polan, age 64, of Medlin Road, Franklin, NC, formerly of Venice, FL passed away Saturday, March 14, 2009 at his residence. He was born in Hungary, the son of Elizabeth Sonji Godri Polan of Cortland, NY and the late Kalman Polan. He was a US Army Veteran during the Vietnam Conflict. He was a welder for Ace Boat Lift Company.

He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Bettie Adema Polan; one step-daughter, Leilani Polan and her husband, Frank of Apex, NC; two sons, Jeffrey D. Polan of Coconut Creek, FL, and Michael Polan of Mt. Laurel, NJ; three brothers, Frank, Kalman and Les Polan all of Cortland, NY. Two grandchildren also survive.

Joseph Ponds

Highlands, NC - Joseph Michael Ponds, of Highlands, NC, passed away on December 29, 2008, at the age of 87 after a long, hard fought battle with cancer. Joe was born and raised in Detroit, MI. When WWII started, he became a Navy pilot. While assigned to Corsair flight school at Virginia Beach, VA, in 1943, he met the love of his life, Elizabeth (Betty) Webb. They were married for 61 years when she passed away in October, 2007. After flight school,

Joe was assigned to the aircraft carrier Antietam as part of the original crew, eventually seeing action in the South Pacific. He was the last surviving pilot from the Antietam original “plank owner” crew. After the war, Joe continued with the Navy and Air Force as a flight instructor, becoming one of the first to be jet certified. Joe and Betty retired to Highlands in 1981, where he became known as the consommé candy maker at Kilwin’s candy shop on Main Street.

Joe is survived by two older sisters, a daughter, a grandson and a great-great grandson. He was a wonderful man and will be sorely missed.

Bruce Karol Powell

Murphy - Bruce Karol Powell, age 50, of Murphy, NC passed away Monday, July 20, 2009 at Mission Memorial Hospital in Asheville, NC.
Mr. Powell was a native of Dade County, Florida and had attended Franklin High School, in Franklin, NC; he was the son of Karol Edward Powell of Murphy, NC and the late Asela Mendoza Powell. He was an electrician and enjoyed motorcycles.

In addition to his mother he was preceded in death by his wife, Deborah Canham Powell.

He is survived by two sons, Christopher Powell and Kyle Powell both of the home; one brother, Michael Powell of Florida and two sisters, Christy Fountain of Clayton, GA and Cindy Powell of Ocala, Florida.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, July 25, 2009 at Ranger Baptist Church in Murphy, NC. Rev. L.B. Adams will officiate.

Eleanor Louise Powell

Franklin, NC - Eleanor Louise Powell, age 51, of Durham, NC formerly of Franklin, NC passed away Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at her residence. She was born in Swain County, NC the daughter of the late Carrie Hall Powell and Richard Powell, Sr. She was a receptionist for the YMCA in Durham, NC. She was a loving mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her daughter, Ayofemi N. Powell of Durham, NC; two brothers, Richard Powell, Jr and LeRoy E. Powell; three grandchildren, Bobby C. Waller, Ethan S. Waller and Kamylle C. Waller.

Daphne Elizabeth Winstead Powers

Franklin - Daphne Elizabeth Winstead Powers, died on January 23, 2010, at her residence in Cowee Valley, at the age of 84, after a long and valiant battle with cancer. She was a native of Elm City, NC. She was the daughter of the late John Clayton and Pallie Rickman Winstead. She was preceded in death by her husband, W.S. Powers, and her sister, Lou Ree Winstead Batts.

She grew up in Elm City and lived there until she went away to college. She was a graduate of Louisburg College and Woman’s College (now UNC-G). After college and marriage, she moved to Lumberton, NC. Her mother was a native of Macon County, and she spent many childhood memories here with family. She always wanted to live in the mountains and was able to do so since 1987, when she retired here to be near her extended family.

She was employed with the Farm Credit Association in Lumberton for 33 years. She held many positions with the association. She enjoyed her work and her co-workers were blessed to know her. She was a member of Barker’s United Methodist Church, Lumberton, NC, and was very active in her church until she moved full time to the mountains. She has attended and supported Cowee Baptist Church, the church of her forefathers, since being in Franklin.

Faith and Family were the most important things in her life. She had the most uplifting spirit in all circumstances. People came to cheer her up, but left cheered up themselves. Her positive attitude in all things will be remembered by all. One was blessed to know her.

She is survived by her daughter; Brenda Powers Walker, of the home, and her son; Wayne Powers and wife, Jane, of Durham, NC. Also surviving are granddaughters; Kimberly Walker of New York City, NY, and Johelen Walker Courliss, and husband, Ben, of Durham, NC. Her twin great-granddaughters, Natalie and Abigail Courliss, were the light of her life. Her sister, Joyce Phillips, of Franklin, NC, and her brother, Dr. John Winstead, and wife, Linda, of Mesa, AZ, also survive. Many cousins, nieces, and nephews will miss her also.

The family acknowledges the kindness of caregivers who have provided special care: Jessie Wilson, Helen Lynn, Kathy Medford, Gail Lemaster, and Hospice. We thank you.

A celebration of her life will be held at Cowee Baptist Church on Monday, January 25, 2010 at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends at the home and from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at Cowee Baptist Church before the service. The Reverend David Powell and Reverend Jerry Moore will officiate. Burial will be in Cowee Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ben Courliss, Tommy Fouts, Bill Fouts, Guy Fouts, Charles Womack, and Arnold Rickman.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to either of the following: Cowee Baptist Church, Hospice, or Friends of Rickman Store (Little Tennessee Land Trust.)

Edlay Berry Pruitt

Franklin, NC - Edlay Berry Pruitt, age 88, of Sugarfork Road, Franklin, NC passed away Saturday, December 26, 2009 at a local nursing home. She was a native of Macon County, NC the daughter of the late William Jack and Annie Gertrude Coggins Berry.She was married to the late Fred Pruitt. She was a homemaker and a member of Sugarfork Baptist Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother and loved to sew and gardening.

She is survived by two daughters, Maxine Passmore of Sylva, NC and Margie Pruitt of Franklin, NC; one son, David Pruitt and his wife Sylvia of Henderson, Nevada; four sisters, Marie Hedden and Mattie Devlin of Candler, NC, Virginia Dills and Martha Dowdle of Franklin, NC; one brother, William A. Berry of Franklin, NC. Four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by a son Charles "Bobby" Jackson Pruitt; two sisters, Elmira Hedden and Lora Hedden; three brothers, William Edward Berry, William J. Berry and William Jack Berry, Jr.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 29 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Alton Dendy officiating. Burial will be at Jennings Cemetery. Billy Reynolds, Bill Pruitt, Rick Berry, Sammy Hedden, Ernest Taylor and David Scott will serve as pallbearers.

Helen V. Puchalski

Franklin, NC - Helen V. Puchalski, age 85, of Carolina Springs Lane, Franklin, NC passed away Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at a local nursing home. She was born in South Deerfield, MA, the daughter of the late Joseph and Jenny Senicki Boro. She was married to the late Joseph Puchalski. She had worked as a waitress for nearly 40 years. She was a volunteer for Macon County Senior Citizens Adult Day Care Program, was a member of Culinary Workers Union in California and was a member of the Polish Alliance. Helen was an avid reader.

She is survived by her daughter, Jean Wright of Franklin, NC; three sisters, Marion Bregaines of Long Meadow, MA, Nancy Melnick of Connecticut and Charlotte Wright of Fallbrook, CA; one brother, Joseph Boro of Las Vegas, NV; one grandchild, Tracy Wright of Kendall, FL.

No services are planned at this time.
