Georgianna Ralston

Highlands - Georgianna Ralston passed away suddenly sometime in the early morning hours of December 19th. The evening before, she and her husband Jack hosted a joyful family Christmas gathering for which, although well known to be somewhat challenged in her cooking skills, she prepared an excellent salad.

Georgianna lived in her beloved Highlands for approximately 13 years. She was born in 1943 to Franklin Schenck and Millie Richardson in Marion County, Indiana and grew up in Plainfield, Indiana. She had a successful career as a flight attendant for Delta Airlines. She was also a nurse and was a longtime volunteer at the Fidelia Eckerd Living Center.

In her last weeks, Georgianna visited her mother in Indiana, and she and Jack spent time with cherished friends in Europe. They also took their grandchildren on a wonderful trip to Disney World and Universal Studios.

Georgianna was a talented artist, especially a photographer and a quilter. Her photographs were often exhibited in the Highlands area and her quilts adorn many homes. She was also an avid reader and member of the Highlands Book Club.

Georgianna is survived by her husband Jack, her mother Millie Richardson, her brother Tom Richardson, her sister Jacqueline Bryant, her step-children Lauren Hester and Christopher Ralston (Cristen), and step-grandchildren Anna Hester, Braden Ralston and Davis Ralston. Georgianna made close friends wherever she went. For all of us, a bright light has gone out this Christmas, but our memories of Georgianna will warm us through the winter and long after. A celebration of Georgianna’s life will take place Monday, December 27 at 2:00 p.m. at the Highlands Presbyterian Church. Rev. Edgar David Riley

Hillsborough, NC - Rev. Edgar David Riley of 518 Terrell Road, Hillsborough, NC, passed away suddenly on Friday afternoon, April 12, 2013, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill, NC. A beloved son, brother, husband, father and friend; he will be greatly missed by many.

David was born on January 19, 1952, in Durham, NC to the late William Edgar "Ed" and Minnie Lee Crabtree Riley. He was a lifelong resident of Hillsborough. He graduated from Orange High School and received his associate degree from the Art Instruction School in Minneapolis, MN. He worked as an award winning graphic artist for the Chapel Hill Newspaper for over twenty-five years before attending and graduating from the Southeastern Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC in 1996.

David served as pastor for churches in North Carolina and Virginia and was a devoted Christian his entire life. Most recently, he was employed at Brookdale Senior Living in Chapel Hill, NC, as a driver. As a minister, he spread his strong belief in the message of God's word and faith in the Lord our Savior to all those in his congregation and community. He knew that with love and faith all was possible. His huge heart and desire to serve others implored him to do for others, and to be much more than a driver at Brookdale. He taught the residents art classes and built bird houses with them. He imparted his vast knowledge of Orange and Durham Counties through his weekly scenic bus tours. He was "Chief" to all Brookdale residents. Dave was always ready to lend a helping hand or be an active listener in need. As evident by his most extensive book collection, David was a voracious reader. He was an ardent Carolina sports fan (we always knew where to find him during March Madness week). He was a firm believer in passing on life's lessons to people of all ages.

Family was an extremely important part of David's life. David married the love of his life, Susan Moore, on December 4, 1982. He was a devoted and compassionate husband and father to his family.
