Addie Ledbetter VanHook

Franklin, NC - Addie Pauline Ledbetter VanHook, age 95, of Addington Bridge Road, Franklin, NC, passed away Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at her residence. She was a native of Macon County, the daughter of the late William C. and Sally Garland Ledbetter. She was married to the late Cecil C. VanHook. She retired from Belden Electrical Cord; she had also worked as a bookkeeper for Mason’s Chrysler and Plymouth, Mooney Chrysler Dealership, Joe Ashear and Roy Biddle. She enjoyed needle work and loved gardening, and was a member of Coweeta Baptist Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Beverly VanHook Schrey and her husband Herb and Betty VanHook Dowdle and the late Hugh Dowdle all of Franklin, NC; one son, William C. VanHook and his wife Linda of Palm Bay, FL; one sister, Maggie L. Mason of Franklin; six grandchildren, Lynette Lee and her husband Tim of Sumter, SC, Billy VanHook, James VanHook and his wife, Leslie of Franklin, NC, Janet VanHook and her husband, Patrick Healy of Franklin, NC, Jeana Capaforte and her husband, Don of Mt. Airy, GA, and Hilary Schrey and wife Melanie of Palm Bay, FL; nine great-grandchildren, Justin and Chelsea Lee, Cara McClure, Amelia and Anthony Capaforte, Candace and Corey Dills, Jared and Joshua VanHook; one great-great grandson; four step-grandchildren, Tony and David Dowdle, and Bruce and Jimmy Davis, three step-great-grandsons, six step-great-granddaughters, and two step-great-great-granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Charlotte L. Henderson and Blanche L. Bateman and four brothers, Gerald Ledbetter,Clarence Ledbetter, Rob Roy Ledbetter, and Woodrow Ledbetter.

Funeral services will be held Friday, January 9th at 3:00pm at Coweeta Baptist Church, with Rev. Davis Hooper officiating. Burial will be at Rush Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00pm, one hour prior to the service at the Church. Memorials may be made to Angel Home Health and Hospice , 170 Church Street, Franklin, NC 28734, or to Coweeta Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Karen Keener, PO Box 424, Franklin, NC 28744.

Roger Aque Vanhook

Franklin, NC - Roger Aque Vanhook, age 98, of Demorest, GA formerly of Franklin, NC passed away Friday, March 13, 2009 at Habersham Medical Center. He was born in Macon County, NC the son of the late Henry R. and Mollie Sanders Vanhook. He was first married to Jessie Justice Vanhook who passed away in 1960. He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Carzell Thompson Vanhook; step-daughter, Kay English and her husband Jimmy and their children, Caney and Anna English and four great-grandchildren, Alex, Daniel, Maverick and Jesse English. He retired from Tallulah Falls Railroad. He was a member of Junaluska Masonic Lodge #145 and he worked for Habersham County for several years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by several step-children by his 2nd wife, Ozella Galloway Vanhook of Demorest, GA; daughters-in-law, Clara and Jackie Vanhook; four granddaughters, Kim, Kandi, Angie and Robyn; great grandchildren, Destiny, Zachary, Brittany and Hunter. He was preceded in death by three sons, Guy, Floyd and Gerald Vanhook; one sister, Onie Ray and brothers, Vance, Lawrence, Roy, Marvin, Harve, and R.D. Vanhook.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 15 at 4:00 PM in the Chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home with Rev. Avery Lawrence, Rev. Vaughn Stancil and Rev. Brion Williams officiating. Burial will be at Clarks Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The Junaluska Lodge will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends Sunday, March 15 from 3:00-4:00 PM, one hour prior to service at Bryant-Grant Funeral.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Clarks Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Jerry Sutton, 1822 Clarks Chapel Road, Franklin, NC 28734.

  Margaret Bowdon Verdin

Highlands - Mrs. Margaret Bowdon Verdin, 84, of Highlands, NC and Lyon Mt., New York, passed away on May 15, 2008 in the Fidelia Eckerd Living Center, Highlands, NC.

Born on October 4, 1923 in Alexandria, LA, the former Margaret Louise Bowdon was a graduate of Bolton High School and earned her BS degree in dietetics from Louisiana State University. On August 28, 1948, she married the Rev. Douglas F. Verdin of Dobbs Ferry, NY in the First United Methodist Church of Alexandria. An active and life-long member of the United Methodist Church, Mrs Verdin devoted her life to numerous church and community activities, while her husband served churches in Edenville, Hartsdale and Rockville Centre, NY and in Westport, Simsbury and Rowayton, CT.

Mrs.Verdin was the daughter of former Mayor of Alexandria, William George Bowdon, and Mary Louise Bowdon. She was predeceased by her husband in 1998, her youngest daughter, Elizabeth Verdin Slocomb in 1993 and by her brothers, former Mayor of Alexandria, William George Bowdon Jr. and Thomas James Bowdon.

Mrs.Verdin is survived by her children, Douglas F. Verdin Jr. of Gaithersburg, MD and Kathryn Verdin Henning of Rabun Gap, GA; five grandchildren, Eric Bowdon Henning of Newport, RI, Brian Frederick Henning of Syracuse, NY, Kristin Margaret Henning of Rabun Gap, GA, Joshua Robert Slocomb of Gaithersburg, MD and Colin Slocomb of Clarksburg, MD; two great- grand children, Taylor Bowdon Henning and Sydney Jane Henning, two cousins; Dr. Henry Middleton of Arcadia, LA and Rev, Henry Bowdon of Lake Charles, LA and a sister-in-law, Maredia Bowdon of Shreveport, LA.

A Memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 8 at 11:30 am in the Lyon Mountain United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Lyon Mt. United Methodist Church, Lyon Mt, NY 12952 or The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.

  Hester Vinson

Franklin, NC - Hester Thomas Cabe Vinson , age 93, of Coweeta Lab Road, Otto passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at a Transylvania Community Hospital. She was a native of Macon County, the daughter of the late Harley and Fannie Bradley Thomas. She was first married to Pascal Cabe who died January 20, 1980 and second to Furman Vinson who died Feb. 21, 1991. She was a retired Hospital Lab Tech and a member of the Mulberry United Methodist Church. She worked for Dr. Kahn for several years and loved gardening and growing roses.

She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Scott and her husband, Paul of Franklin, NC and June Lowery and her husband Irbyan of Brevard, NC; two step-daughters, Joanne Tumidolozky of Atlanta, GA and Rebecca Sandlin of Dillard, GA; one step-son, Gene Vinson of Dillard, GA; two sisters, Mrs. Leonard Chastain of Otto, NC and Nancy Wilson of Brevard, NC ; one brother, Hoyt Thomas of Otto, NC. Six grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Iva Lee Rogers and Beatrice Henson.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 13 at 2:00 PM at Mulberry United Methodist Church with Rev. Michael Binger officiating. Burial will be held at Ashbury United Methodist Church Cemetery. Denny Dills, Vic Chastain, Phil Chastain, Kevin Jump, Allen Thomas and David Hodgins will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends Thursday, March 12 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home where the body will remain until placed in the Church thirty minutes prior to the service.

Marilyn Allen Votry

Franklin, NC - Marilyn Allen Votry, age 80, of Delia Drive, Franklin, NC passed away Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at an Asheville Hospital. She was born in Attica, NY the daughter of the late Robert and Marian Perkins Allen. She was a retired assistant Post Master and a member of St. Agnes Episcopal Church. She loved to play cards, board games and putting together puzzles.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Howard R. Votry; two daughters, Linda A. Bennett of Franklin, NC and Darlene T. Votry of Rockledge, FL; one son, Bradley A. Votry of Franklin, NC; one sister, Virginia Nichols of Corfu, NY; two grandchildren, Krista L. Steele and Mitchell L. Votry. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Teri Lynn Votry and a brother who died in WWII, Roger Robert Allen.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Penny Benedict Voyles

Franklin, NC - Penny Benedict Voyles, age 60, of Ryan Road, Franklin, NC, passed away Saturday, April 11, 2009 in a local hospital. She was a native of Albany County, New York, the daughter of Freda Hellenbeck Platt of Holiday, Florida and the late Vernon Benedict. She had worked for Sperry-Rand Electronics, building computers.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of six years, Johnny Michael Voyles; one daughter, Freda Bruce of Franklin, NC, one son, Luther Stinnett, III of Franklin, NC; three sisters, Sharron Platt of Tarpon Springs, FL, Carol Ann Schneeblee and Judith Ann Benedict both of Holiday, FL; five brothers, Vernon Benedict, of Castleton, NY, James Benedict of Sevierville, TN, Paul Benedict of Franklin, NC, Jerry Benedict of Holiday, FL, and Buddy Benedict of Hayesville, NC; seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren also survive.

No services are planned.
