Bernard John Smetanka, 96, of Franklin, joined the choir of angels on January 16, 2018. Bernie was loving and devoted to his family. The son of the late John Andrew and Margaret Miller Smetanka, Bernie served in the United States Marine Corps in World War II earning two purple hearts. He owned and operated his own business, Bernard's Upholstery, in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida from 1950 until retirement in 1983 when he retired to Franklin to live fulltime.
Bernie was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church where he sang in the choir, was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and was a former Grand Knight. He loved the outdoors, camping, playing golf, and watching baseball. His passion was singing and bringing happiness to others.
Bernie was preceded in death by two wives, Ilean Smetanka and Dorothy Egan Smetanka, and sister, Gertrude Sofren. He is survived by sister, Margaret Miller of Boise, Idaho; sons, Bill of Tampa, FL, Marty of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; daughter, Betty Cerri Artman of Franklin; six grandchildren, and seven great‑grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 ‑ 10:45 am on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at St. Francis Catholic Church and a Celebration of Life Mass officiated by Father Tien Duong will be held at 11:00 am. Interment with Military Honors at Woodlawn Cemetery will follow Mass.
