William "Bill" Albert Whiteside

August 1, 1925 ~ December 13, 2017 (age 92) 92 Years Old


William A. "Bill" Whiteside, 92, of Cashiers, NC passed away early Wednesday, December 13, 2017 surrounded by family and friends. He was born in Bradenton, Florida, the son of the late Cecil and Fannie Whiteside. He proudly served his country as a Marine in World War 2 stationed in the Philippines. Upon returning pursued a career in art receiving a Masters of Fine Art degree from Florida State University. For many years he taught art, with George W. Bush as one of his notable students, and had several paintings inducted into the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. He owned and operated the Whiteside Art Gallery in Cashiers for 40 years.  Many loved that he chose to repurpose the old Cashiers Baptist Church into his Art Gallery. He loved to share God's beauty through his realistic landscapes, so others could see the beauty that he did.  Mr. & Mrs. Whiteside loved to help others in their community. He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Whiteside, who died in 2014, a son, William Albert Whiteside, and sister, Mildred Powell.

Mr. Whiteside is survived by his daughter, Susan Williams (Peter) of Atlanta, GA, son, Norman Whiteside (Sally) of High Point, NC; grandchildren, William Greyson Whiteside and William Norman Whiteside.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at 3:00 pm at Upper Zachary Cemetery in Cashiers, with Rev. Steve Kerhoulas officiating. A community Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Fishes & Loaves Food Pantry, Inc. in Cashiers, 549 Frank Allen Rd, Cashiers, NC 28717.
