Hazel Bernice (Moses) Stamey

Hazel Bernice Moses Stamey, 86, passed away Saturday, October 28, 2017.

Mrs.Stamey was born April 20, 1931, in Macon County to the late Lorenze Thomas Moses and Edna Bowman Moses. Hazel was preceded in death by the father of her children Dennis Virgil Stamey in 1957. She married Jay Lloyd Stamey in 1968, and he preceded her in death in 2014. 

Hazel began her teaching career in Aniak, Alaska in 1952, and taught several years in different areas of Alaska. Most of her 37 years of teaching was in Macon County, from which she retired in 1988.  She loved teaching and cared deeply for her students. 

Mrs.Stamey was a member of Higdonville Baptist Church where she was a former Sunday School Teacher and often served as superintendent of Bible School. She enjoyed reading, walking and had a deep respect for and love of nature and all of its beauty.  She was an excellent listener and friend to many.  Her children jokingly teased her about her great love of chocolate and for "wiping out" all germs within her reach. 

Survivors include two daughters, Becky Powers and Soni Vanhook (Denny) both of Franklin, NC; a son, Dennis Nelson Stamey (Terry) of Franklin, NC; a sister, Melba Huggins of Tiger, Ga; and a brother, Joseph Moses of Sylva, NC, four grandchildren: Breanna Ledford Pratt (Greg), Kimberly Vanhook Terrell (Brian), Jake Stamey, and Leah Stamey Talley (Lee); six great-grandchildren: Farrah and Starlynn Pratt;  Andrew, Andrea and  Anderson Terrell; and Lyla Talley.

Mrs.Stamey was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Corbin; and two brothers: Harry Moses and infant Edgar Moses.

 A funeral service will be held 7:00 P.M. Wednesday evening, November 1, 2017, in the chapel of Bryant-Grant Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 5-7 P.M. prior to the service with Rev. Steve Reeves officiating. Graveside rites will follow at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, November 2, 2017, at Sugar Fork Baptist Church Cemetery.
