John Brownlow "JB" Keener, age 92, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, December 27, 2017. He was born on February 27, 1925 at Eastlaport, Jackson County, NC. His father, John Richmond Keener, his mother, Bertha Smith Keener, his sister, Della Keener McCall and his brother, Arnold R. Keener, and many other relatives precede him in death.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Ruby Estell Webb Keener. They just celebrated their anniversary on December 24, 2017. He leaves behind seven children; Weldon Keener, Gail (Willard) Garland, Janice (Ronald) Demore, Ervin (Debbie) Keener, Joan (Milton) Estes, Hilda (Randy) Brown and Bruce (Tina) Keener. He was a wonderful grandfather to 13 grandchildren, 16 great‑grandchildren and two great‑great grandchildren.
He was a Baptist by faith, joining Goldmine Baptist Church on October 15, 1939. He was ordained as a Deacon on November 4, 1956, served faithfully for 61 years, and fulfilled many positions in the church.
He raised his family by working in logging, textiles, and carpentry trade throughout his life. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, walking in the woods, farming, and studying the Word of God. His passion for understanding the Bible, was such that he completed numerous bible study courses earning certificates of completion, and building a library of biblical resources to pass along to his children and grandchildren.
Funeral Service will be held 2:00 pm, Saturday, December 30, 2017 at the Goldmine Baptist Church. The family will receive friends and family Saturday from 12:30 ‑ 2:00 pm, prior to the service at the church. Rev. Gene Hawkins and Rev. Howard Southard will officiate. Burial will be at Mount Moriah Cemetery, Goldmine Community. Pallbearers will be John McCall, Skip Keener, B. J. Keener, Caden Brown, Nathan Demore, Nick Demore, Ty Keener and Miles Keener.
