John Washington McDowell

John Washington McDowell, 94, of Otto, NC, passed away on July 15, 2019.  Born in Macon County on January 14, 1925, he was the son of Tom and Bessie Cabe McDowell.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Willie Kate Burrell McDowell; his three sisters, one brother, his son-in-law, Norman Peterman and one great grandchild, Daemian Thomas Mancini.

He served his country through service in the army in WWII and was awarded four bronze stars.  He retired from the North Carolina Department of Corrections.  He was a member of Mulberry United Methodist Church.  He was also a member of the American Legion for over fifty years.

He is survived by his five children, John Michael McDowell (Melanie) of Angier, NC; Gail Peterman of Otto, Deborah Vanhook (Tommy) of Mars Hill, Lee Ann Muse of Otto, and Donna McCall (Dale) of Franklin; ten grandchildren, April McDowell, Chris McDowell, Tom McDowell, Scott McDowell, Norman Peterman, Chelsea Mancini, Courtney Banks, Brandon Vanhook, Amber McCall and Amanda Muse; seven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 P.M. Thursday, July 18, 2019 at Newman Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Kelly Dotson, Rev. Eric Henson, and Rev. David DeWitt officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors conducted by the American Legion post 108 and VFW post 7339. The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 17, 2019 from 6-8 p.m. at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Tom McDowell, Scott McDowell, Norman Peterman, Brandon Vanhook, Tracy McDowell, Isaiah Banks, and Dale Dallmann.
