Conyers, GA - Charles Max Corbin, 76, of Harvest, Alabama, passed away Sunday, February 17, 2008. Max was a long time resident of Conyers, Georgia, where he was a child care professional and minister.
Max was born in Franklin, North Carolina to Fred Joshua Corbin and Addie Crawford Corbin in 1931 and grew up as an active farm boy in a family with five brothers and a sister. He went to elementary school at the Higdonville Elementary School, the site of Higdonville Baptist Church. Max graduated from Franklin High School in 1949. He then went to Carson Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee, where he met his future wife, Mary Helen Perry of Rome, Georgia. Max completed his Bachelors degree in Philosophy at Carson Newman in 1954, and then went to Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. During his seminary stay, Max worked as the recreation director at the detention center in Louisville. At Southern his first two sons, Carl and Mark, were born. After completing his Bachelors of Divinity degree in 1958, he accepted a job as Chaplain of the South Carolina School for Boys in Florence. In 1965 he moved to Conyers, Georgia where he was an administrator and chaplain at the Plantation Manor Children's Home, and third son Jeff was born. In 1973 Max accepted a staff position as assistant pastor at the First Baptist Church in Conyers, Georgia and then in 1987 became assistant pastor at the Baptist Tabernacle in Atlanta. After semi-retirement in 1995 he became a substitute teacher in the Rockdale County School System.
Max loved his church and served as chaplain, pastor, deacon, teacher, Sunday school superintendent, and choir member. Max will be remembered for his love of family and sports. Max was chaplain of the Rockdale High football team for 16 years, and completed 17 Peachtree Road Races. Known as "Pawpaw" by his family, he was a beloved brother, husband, father, and grandfather, always eager to take one of his grandchildren for a walk or out for breakfast.
Max is survived by son Carl Corbin and his wife Teressa of Midlothian, Texas, son Mark Corbin and his wife Janet of Harvest, Alabama, and son Jeff Corbin and his wife Sheila of Elkmont, Alabama and 11 grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 pm to 8 pm Thursday, February 21, at the Bryant-Grant Funeral Home in Franklin, NC; and funeral services will be held at 1 pm on Friday, February 22, at the Higdonville Baptist Church in Franklin.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be given to Wall Highway Baptist Church for their building fund, at 6597 Wall Triana Highway, Madison, AL 35757.
