Charles Curtis Jr. 87, of Sylva passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 25, 2015. He grew up in Franklin, the son of the late Charlie Curtis and Minnie McCall Curtis in a family of eleven siblings. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 50 years, Georgia Moffitt Curtis, a grandson, Chris Smith, two brothers and three sisters.

Charles proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. Later he continued his military career with the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1972 with over twenty years of combined service. He became a familiar face at Franklin’s American Legion hall where he enjoyed calling bingo for many years.

He is survived by his wife of eleven years, Edna Rogers Curtis, who was his constant and loving companion. also surviving are sons Johnny Curtis (Kathy) of North Dakota, Floyd Curtis (Renee) of Texas, and Tommy Curtis (Jan) of Franklin; daughters Sandra Smith (Eddie) and Teressa Curtis, both of Franklin, and Barbara Parris of Sylva with whom he and Edna made there home. Other family members include eight grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, two brothers and three sisters.

A memorial celebration of life will be held at Watauga Baptist Church on Thursday, August 6, 2015 at 6:00 PM with Rev. Wesley Price officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

The family requests any memorial donations be made to the Wounded Warriors Project in honor of Charles’ military service or to a charity of one’s choice.
