Highlands, NC - Dorothy Richardson Jackson went home to be with the Lord, January 13, 2012 at the Fidelia-Eckerd Living Center. Miss Dot, as she was called, moved to Chestnut Hill of Highlands in 1996. A native of Nashville, Tennessee, she was educated, lived and worked there with her husband of 59 years, Robert Lee Jackson, until his death in 1994. She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Jackson Patton, and son-in-law, C. Clement Patton. There are four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Dot’s career covered everything from writing radio and television scripts, designing billboard advertisements, writing for newspapers and magazines, as well as advising Baptist Bookstore managers on advertising while she worked for the Southern Baptist Convention.

Dot co-established an international program at her church where they taught English as a Second Language to women from other countries whose husbands were working in Nashville. The program expanded to include child care, evening classes for the working husbands, Bible Study, choir, hobbies and gardening as well as enrichment classes for the children. During teaching ESL in Nashville for twelve years, Dot remembered classes that included as many as eight different nationalities. After coming to Highlands, Dot continued teaching ESL through the Literacy Council at the Peggy Crosby Center. She served on the board of the International Friendship Center.
