J. David Smith

McAllen, TX - J. David Smith, age 55, of McAllen, TX passed away Thursday, November 27, 2014.

He was raised in Greenville, SC, the son of the late James D. and Judy Raines Smith. He received a Bachelors of Music degree from Furman University and a Masters degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. He was a band director in the McAllen ISD School District for 32 years, first at McAllen High School and then the last 12 years at Morris Middle School. His passion was teaching and he loved nothing more than being a guide for his students.

He will be sorely missed by his wife of 34 years, Candace Combs Smith. Also surviving are sisters Diane (Charlie) Delaine and Carol (Joel) Ambrose, special aunt Mamie Jo Porter, father-and mother in-law Cass and Mary Lou Combs, brothers-in-law Lawrence (Randi) Combs and Lucian (Judy) Combs, sister-in-law Melanie Combs, several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Bryant Grant Funeral home on Saturday, December 6, from 1:00-2:00 p.m., followed by a service in the chapel. Burial will be in Iotla Baptist Cemetery. The Reverend Lawrence Combs will officiate. Pall Bearers will be Lucian Combs, Melanie Combs, Jeff Combs, Jason Combs, Ryan Combs and Erin Combs.
