Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Herschel Milo and Eula George Burrell Cabe. Following a successful law career spanning 39 years, he retired in 2009. After that, he spent many happy days with his family, friends, his dogs, puttering in the garden, and keeping the wood fire stoked. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.

Jim is survived by his wife of 22 years, Kaye Young Cabe; his daughter, Kimberly Cabe Smith, and husband, David Smith, of Hendersonville, North Carolina; his son, Jeremy Cabe, of Franklin, North Carolina; one brother, David Lawson Cabe, and wife, Katie Cabe, of Otto, North Carolina; and one sister, Myrtis Dillard, and husband, Edward Dillard, of Dillard, Georgia. Four beloved grandchildren, Zack and Emma Smith, and Parker and Brennan Cabe, also survive, as well as a host of dear and devoted friends.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 3, 2013, at the home, with his friend, Allen Willis, officiating. Friends attending the memorial service should meet at the Otto Fire Department and Community Building at 2:30 on Sunday for carpooling to the home.

Flowers are appreciated, but memorial donations may be made to Angel Hospice, 170 Church Street, Franklin, North Carolina 28734.
