James Ramsdell

James (Jim) Ramsdell 83, of Highlands, NC passed away peacefully with his family and dear friend by his side on Wednesday, May 11, 2022.  He was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandpa, and friend.  Jim was born November 16, 1938 in Dayton, Maine and lived in Ogunquit, Maine.  After high school, Jim went on a cross country motorcycle trip and when he came home, Rene Weitkamp, who would become the love of his life, was there waiting.  They were married in Clearwater, Florida on April 26, 1960 and lived for a short time in Maine, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire, before settling in St. Petersburg, Florida to raise two children.  There, Jim worked in commercial construction management and always had an at-home project in the works.  He was DIY before HGTV was even thought about.  In 1987, they moved to Highlands, North Carolina to fulfill a dream of owning a Bed and Breakfast.  After 15 years as innkeepers, they retired and enjoyed living in the beauty of the Great Smokey mountains and traveling across the continent in their motorhome.

Jim was dedicated to serving the Lord and touched many lives, more than he probably realized.   Always willing to lend a helping hand, he had a “wicked” sense of humor, and loved making others laugh.  Jim was an avid NASCAR fan, enjoyed playing in the Highlands Dulcimer Club, going for a ride in the car to favorite places, and playing cards, especially Hand and Foot.  Jim lived life fully and is now in his forever home, the house of the Lord.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Rene.  They enjoyed 58 wonderful years of marriage together.  He is survived by two daughters, Gail Ramsdell of Safety Harbor, Florida and Bonnie McCray of Fort Wayne, Indiana; two grandchildren Kayla McCray and Connor McCray; Brother-in-law, Doug Ramsdell (Betty), dear friend Pat Williams, and countless friends; who all love him and miss him dearly.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Highlands United Methodist Church (315 Main Street) on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. with food and fellowship to follow.  The service will also be streamed live on the Highland United Methodist Church facebook page for those unable to travel.
