Cashiers, NC - James Dupont Tippy Kirven, III, age 70, of Cashiers, NC passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at his home surrounded by family. Tippy was born in Goldsboro, NC, the son of the late James Dupont Kirven, Jr. and Shirley Armentrout Kirven. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and returned to the family business to eventually serve as president of the J.A. Kirven Co. which operated Kirvens Department Store in Columbus, GA. He later worked as a realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty in Highlands, NC. He was a civic leader actively involved in his communities, serving on the boards of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce, the Columbus Better Business Bureau, the Downtown Business Association of Columbus, and the Highlands-Cashiers Board of Realtors. He was an avid golfer who learned the game at an early age from his father. Tippy later instilled in his three sons that same passion for the game. He loved life and he never met a stranger.
He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 49 years, Frances James Frankie Kirven; three sons, James Dupont Kirven, IV and his wife, Jan of Summerfield, NC, Stephen Scherer Kirven and his wife, Rita of Taylors, SC, and Foy Alexander Kirven of Columbus, GA; five grandchildren, Chase White and his wife, Stephanie of Raleigh, NC, Ashton Kirven of Summerfield, NC, Grace Kirven, James Kirven, and Will Kirven of Taylors, SC; three siblings, Frances Kirven Morse of Redwood City, CA, Hal Kirven and Elliott Kirven of Columbus, GA.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church in Columbus, GA and Cashiers United Methodist Church in Cashiers, NC.
A memorial service will be held at Cashiers United Methodist Church at 2pm on January 7, 2014 with a reception to follow at the church. An additional service will be held in Columbus, GA at a later date.
Bryant Grant Funeral Home, Franklin NC is in charge of local arrangements.
