John "Smiley" Marvin Evans

Otto, NC - John "Smiley" Marvin Evans, age 88, of Otto, NC passed away Friday, January 23, 2015 at his residence. He was born in Habersham Co., GA the son of the late John Woodfine Grady Evans and Sallie Mae Pruitt Evans. He was a carpenter and a member of the Coweeta Baptist Church. He was a US WWII Veteran of the US Navy. He was on the USS New Jersey during WWII and received 7 Bronze Stars.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lillian Marie Carpenter Evans; a daughter, Evelyn Evans Henson of Otto, NC; a son, Lester Neville Evans of Otto, NC; sisters, Hazel Mae Holbrook of Mt. Airy, GA, Carolyn Diane Hembree and Martha Ann Stewart of Greenwood, SC and Peggy Evans; brothers, Joseph Alfred Evans of Hartwell, GA, Jimmie Andrew Evans of Mt. Airy, GA and Theodore Herman Evans of Simpsonville, SC. Five grandchildren, Jessica Evans,and Myra Reynolds of Franklin, NC, Lesley Hardigree of Dallas, GA, Mark Reynolds of Franklin, NC and Tanya Evans of Winston-Salem, NC; five great-grandchildren, Alena reynolds and Zachary Soto of Franklin, NC, Kayli Elliott and Madison Stockton of Dallas, GA and Kenra Brown of Franklin, NC. He was preceded in death by a son, Larry Marvin Evans; a sister, Allene Prater; brothers, Floyd Grady Evans, Hoyt Lewis Evans and Thomas Eugene Evans.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, January 31 at 12:00 Noon at Coweeta Baptist Church with Rev. Davis Hooper and Rev. Bryon Lamb officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday, January 31 from 10:30-12:00 Noon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Coweeta Baptist Church Building Fund, 780 Coweeta Church Road, Otto, NC 28763.
