Charlotte - Ms.Lois "Jo" Childers Fender, 73, entered peacefully into eternal rest at her home in Charlotte early Sunday morning, May 29, 2011. Jo was born September 11, 1937 in High Point,NC to Judd R. Childers and Lois Cox Childers, formerly of Franklin, NC. Jo attended Cowee Elementary School in Macon County. She was a graduate of Harding High School, class of 1956. Jo was a retired clerk at the Department of Homeland Security. She was a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Franklin, NC. Her passion was genealogy and organizing reunions with her Childers, McCoy, Welch, West, and Cloer cousins. She was also a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in Charlotte and the Macon County Historical Society in Franklin,NC.
Jo is survived by her son, David M. Ballard (Jackie)of Monroe,NC; daughters Kathryn F. Statham, of Charlotte,NC and Kelly L. Johnson (Kevin) of Stanley,NC; granddaughter Katie Rhodes of Charlotte,NC; grandsons Chaz and Cody Johnson of Stanley,NC; stepgrandchildren Heather Nash of Indian Trail,NC and Shaun Hood of Monroe,NC. The family would like to thank Jen Turpin of Community Home Care & Hospice for her special care.
A celebration of Jo's life was held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Palmetto Funeral Home, Fort Mill,SC with the Rev Beth Brittain officiating. The family received friends from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers the family requested that a donation be made in Jo's name to Community Home Care & Hospice, 2661 W. Roosevelt Blvd, Suite 104, Monroe, NC 28110.
A memorial service will be held in Franklin, NC Saturday, August 25, 2012 at 12:00 Noon at the Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Franklin, NC. Reverend Jim Dusek will officiate. A covered dish luncheon will follow in the fellowship hall following the service. Everyone invited.
