He is survived by his wife Brooke Hamilton MacKinnon; children: Mary Katherine MacKinnon, Chico, CA; Virginia Lee MacKinnon, Ft.Collins, CO; Luther Gillis MacKinnon, IV, Ft. Collins, CO and William Hunter Cressall, Birmingham, AL; brother, Norris MacKinnon, Richmond, KY and five grandchildren.

The memorial service is Thursday, July 11, 2013, 2:00pm, Church of the Good Shepherd, Cashiers, NC; Reverends Virginia Monroe and Toby Summerour officiating. Reception following service, Hines Hall. Donations to L. Gillis MacKinnon Memorial, Cashiers Historical Society, Cashiers 28717.
