Mary Cathryn "Cathy" Powell Sill, an award-winning educator, celebrated author of children's science books, devoted naturalist, and faithful Christian whose life's work helped generations of children discover the wonder of God's creation, died peacefully on June 22, 2026. She was 73.
For more than five decades, Mrs. Sill quietly built a legacy that reached far beyond the classroom. As an elementary school teacher, she inspired countless young minds with patience, curiosity, and kindness. As an author of thirty acclaimed nonfiction picture books, she introduced children across the world to birds, mammals, reptiles, insects, fish, and countless other creatures, presenting the natural world with uncommon clarity, scientific accuracy, and reverence.
Born February 8, 1953, in Asheville, North Carolina, Cathy was the daughter of Jack Howard Powell and Mary Jarvis Powell. From an early age, she developed an abiding love for nature, learning, and teaching—interests that would define her life's work.
She graduated magna cum laude from Western Carolina University in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. That same year, on March 16, she married the love of her life, John Charles Sill. Their marriage of fifty-one years was marked by steadfast devotion, shared creativity, deep friendship, and a common calling to educate and inspire others.
Mrs. Sill devoted thirty years to elementary education with the Macon County Schools, where she became known as an exceptional teacher who made the outdoors an extension of the classroom. Her excellence was recognized nationally when she was honored by the National Science Teacher Association and the Junior Library Guild, awards reflecting both her mastery of her subject and her extraordinary ability to awaken curiosity in young learners.
Those who knew Cathy best understood that her deepest calling was not found in awards or publications but in faithful service. A lifelong Sunday School teacher and ordained deacon, she lived a life centered on Jesus Christ. Her Christian faith shaped every aspect of her work, especially her conviction that caring for God's creation was an act of worship. She saw no conflict between science and Scripture; instead, she believed each illuminated the other, revealing the wisdom and majesty of the Creator.
Mrs. Sill is survived by her beloved husband of fifty-one years, John Charles Sill; her sister, Nancy Powell Ellis; and her cherished nieces and nephews: Amanda, Will, Jackson, Everly, Penelope, Ellison, and Allison, Benjamin, Anna, Millie, MaryEllen Collins and Lila, along with many extended family members, former students, fellow educators, church family, and friends whose lives were profoundly touched by her kindness and example.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack Howard Powell and Mary Jarvis Powell.
Those wishing to honor Cathy's memory may make memorial contributions to Grace Presbyterian Church, 360 First Street, Franklin, North Carolina 28734, or to the Evangelical Environmental Network through CreationCare.org, organizations that reflect her enduring commitment to Christian discipleship and faithful stewardship of God's creation.
