Michael Malinovsky

Charleston SC - Dr. Michael R. Malinovsky of Charleston, SC, formerly of Franklin, NC, passed away Monday, May 26, 2008, after a long, hard-fought battle with cancer. He was 67.

Born in Chicago, Illinois on July 1, 1940, Dr. Mike received his B.A. from Depauw University in 1962, his Masters in Clinic Psychology from the University of Florida in 1964, and his M.D. from Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. in 1969. Board certified in internal medicine, he began his medical career as a Naval physician (at Portsmouth Naval Hospital and then Naval Hospital Jacksonville) before moving into private practice (first in Franklin, NC and most recently in Charleston, SC at Roper Hospital's Kiawah-Seabrook Medical Center).

Throughout his life, he took every opportunity to live life to the fullest. Dr. Mike felt privileged to practice medicine and honored to care for and get to know the many patients he treated over the years. He enjoyed the professional rapport and the personal friendships he shared with his many colleagues and co-workers. Outside of the office, he was an avid photographer, gardener, woodworker, reader, traveler and Civil War buff, and he took great pleasure in the friendships he made as he pursued these interests. But to him his greatest joy and his time most well-spent was with his family and close friends, especially his wife of 46 years, Susan O'Hare Malinovsky, his children, and his grandchildren. Whether it was coaching or watching sporting events, hiking in the mountains, biking around the islands, playing on the beach, boating in the rivers, or just visiting with friends, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend.

He had a unwavering will to live a full and active life and an unfailing positive attitude in times of challenge and adversity. He touched many lives and many hearts. To know him was to love him. He will be dearly remembered and greatly missed.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Jessica M. Traynham (Easley, SC) and Jennifer D. Malinovsky (Atlanta, GA); a son, Michael O. Malinovsky and daughter-in-law, Robin B. Malinovsky (Atlanta, GA); six grandchildren, (Sawyer, Nicholas, Carson, Michael, Christopher and Taylor); his mother, Virginia Malinovsky; sister, Susan Trembley; and brother, Donald Malinovsky (all of Orlando, FL), and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, May 31, 2008, at 1:30 p.m., St. John's Parish, 3673 Maybank Highway, John's Island, SC 29455.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Blood and Marrow Transplant Unit at Roper Hospital, 316 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC 29401 or to the Ronald McDonald House, 81 Gadsden Street, Charleston, SC 29401.
