Franklin, NC - Pauline Shields Houston, age 96, of the Iotla community passed away at Angel Medical Center on December 30, 2013 following a period of declining health.
Pauline was born January 28, 1917 in Haywood County to Charles Anthony and Elsie Duvall Shields. She was a lifelong resident of Macon County. In 1830, the Shields family settled in Macon County and participated in its formation.
She is survived by her son, Jay Mitchell and his wife Robbin Shope Houston, and her grandson, Mitchell Shaun Houston.
Pauline is survived by her faithful brother-in-law, Ernest Childers, and special lifetime friend and cousin, Hazel McWherter as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her one sister, Annie Lois Childers, and two brothers, William Troy Shields, and Charles Anthony Shields, Jr.
After a 35 year career, Pauline retired, in 1982, from the NC State Extension Service. She was the oldest member of the Cowee Baptist Church. She was devoted to her family, and she enjoyed many dear friends.
Her memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 4th, at the Cowee Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at 2:00 pm, with the service to follow at 3:00 pm.
The family wishes to thank her caregivers and doctor for their kindness and understanding given to Pauline.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Cowee Baptist Church Building Fund or Cemetery Fund at 6301 Bryson City Road, Franklin, NC 28734.
