Shirley Lohmaine Hardy

Shirley Lohmaine Hardy, 92, of Franklin, passed away August 10, 2026. She is survived by her husband, George of 68 years and 4 sons: Stephen of Franklin, NC, Alan/Lynn of Murfreesboro, TN, Keith/Leah of Franklin, NC and Daryl/Carrie of Orlando, FL. She had 13 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Shirley was born in Orlando, FL on August 6, 1934 to Walter and Alma Dallas. After graduation from high school, she attended Florida State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Music Education degree and a certificate in Voice. She taught music for 7 years at Memorial Junior High School in Orlando where she met her husband. Shirley also taught private piano lessons from her home for 10 years.

After marriage, Shirley & George sang in the First Presbyterian Church of Orlando choir and she directed a women’s ensemble there. Shirley also sang in a local group called the “Juliettes.”

After retirement, the couple moved to Franklin, NC and became active playing tennis in the Senior Games. Shirley won medals in singing, swimming, and a gold in Raleigh in badminton. Shirley and George joined the First United Methodist Church choir in Franklin, NC, where Shirley was a director for 2 years. She also sang in the Community chorus and the Carolines.

Shirley possessed a rare and beautiful spirit of sacrifice, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of everyone she encountered through her profound commitment to helping others. Her life was defined by quiet, meaningful acts of service, perhaps most beautifully illustrated in her deep friendship with Janet, a nursing home resident suffering from MS. Every week, Shirley would faithfully visit Janet to read to her, ensuring she never felt isolated, and she routinely went above and beyond by transporting her to church and welcoming her into her own family gatherings as one of their own. She stayed by her side until Janet passed away. This same devotion extended directly to her grandchildren, whom she treasured deeply; Shirley made it her personal mission to ensure they regularly attended church, frequently driving to pick them up herself whenever their parents were unable to do so.

Bryant-Grant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. There will be a private service for the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Music or Missions departments of First United Methodist Church of Franklin in her honor.
