Steven “Steve” Marsh Sandlin, 77, of Decatur, Alabama, died peacefully on August 24, 2025 in Highlands, North Carolina. Born on September 23, 1947, in Gadsden, Alabama, Steve lived a life marked by devotion—to his family, his community, his work, and his church.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Carol Sandlin; daughters Allison Sandlin Liles (Eric) and Mary Katherine Stults (Adam); and grandchildren Hill Liles, Pailet Liles, Annie Stults, and Tait Stults. He was preceded in death by his parents, Judson and Peg Sandlin, and his brother, David Sandlin.
Steve was a proud graduate and lifelong supporter of the University of Alabama. He never met a stranger and had the rare gift of making everyone—from lifelong friends to taxi drivers in faraway countries—feel like they were the most important person in the room. His attentive listening, warm presence, and radiant smile left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Steve founded, owned, and operated Pay-Less Pharmacy for many years, where he lived out the Golden Rule: treating others as he wished to be treated. His deep respect for his customers and community was one of the hallmarks of his career and the foundation of the pharmacy’s success. This success was recognized by the Alabama Retail Association when Steve was awarded the title Retailer of the Year in 2007.
His greatest joy was his family. Steve traveled extensively with his wife, Carol—nearly always with family or friends in tow. For him, things in life were simply better when shared with those you love. He never ended a visit with his daughters or grandchildren without reminding them of two things: how much he loved them and how proud he was of them.
Steve’s unmatched work ethic was balanced by a generous spirit. Even in retirement, he kept busy while enjoying time at his beloved mountain and beach homes. He gave freely of his love, his time, and his resources, and his legacy of kindness and generosity will continue through those he touched.
Steve’s funeral will be held on Tuesday, September 2, at 1:00 PM at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Decatur, Alabama, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church or the Committee on Church Cooperation, both in Decatur.
