On August 29th, 2023, we bid farewell to Steven Paul Sheridan Sr., who passed away at Harris Regional Medical Center after his courageous battle with lung cancer. Steve received his diagnosis in March and embarked on a determined journey of aggressive treatments to combat the disease.
Surviving Steve Sr. are his daughter Stephanie Hopper, her husband Marcus, and their three children, Jacob, Scarlett, and Shepard, residing in Gleason, TN. He is also survived by his son, Steve Sheridan Jr., and his wife Christina, along with their two daughters, Olivia and Vivian, who call Franklin, NC, their home.
Steve's life was a tapestry of adventure as he navigated the world. Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, he answered the call of duty by joining the Navy, setting sail to gather worldly experiences. His travels led him to the Mediterranean Sea, South America, and many ports in between. His military service was a source of immense pride, worn as a badge of honor. After his service, Steve returned to Cleveland for several years, where he passionately cheered on his beloved football team, the Cleveland Browns. Those who knew him understood that his devotion to sports held a special place in his heart and life. Following the Browns' relocation to Baltimore, Steve packed his bags and headed for the beaches of the Outer Banks in North Carolina. His love for the area had been nurtured over years of vacationing, and he was now ready to call it home. In the fall of 2000, he set off on a new adventure to Las Vegas, Nevada, where his passion for sports took center stage. For 12 years, Steve was deeply immersed in the world of recreational sports betting, always ready to offer his pick of the day. In 2012, he made the decision to return to Sylva, NC, to be closer to his four cherished grandchildren. Steve was a doting grandfather who relished the moments he spent with them.
In his professional life, Steve left an indelible mark at Western Carolina University, where he worked in the custodial department. His infectious smile, coupled with his unwavering commitment to maintaining the facilities to the highest standards, made him a beloved figure among students and staff alike. As we move forward in life, we will remember Steve Sr. for his vibrant personality, boundless compassion, and infectious sense of humor. His remains were cremated, and while there are no concrete plans set to date, his final resting place will be the Atlantic Ocean, near his favorite fishing pier on the Outer Banks, early next spring.
To Big Steve, your memory will forever live in our hearts. Rest in peace Dad.
