Dorothy (Dottie) Godwin Caye Obituary

CAYE, DOROTHY (Dottie) GODWIN passed away peacefully on July 14, 2021, surrounded by her family after a short illness.

Her beloved husband of 59 years, Charles G. (Peter) Caye Sr., preceded her in death, as did her father, William Morris Godwin, and her mother, Puella Hudson Godwin.

Dottie was a native of Atlanta, Georgia, but called Augusta, Ga., St. Simons Island, Ga. and Highlands, N.C. home. She graduated from Girls' High in Atlanta, went on to attend business school, and became a secretary to the man she would later marry. Dottie loved to play golf and was a member of Atlanta Country Club, Highlands Country Club, Atlanta, and Highlands Country Club Women’s Golf Association. She was also a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Augusta, Ga. She was a homemaker, an artist, a great football, and horse show mom. Dottie loved the start of college football season and took great pleasure in cheering for the Georgia Bulldogs and SEC Football. It was rumored she would place an occasional wager on the games. Traveling was another one of her passions. She enjoyed planning trips and visiting many wonderful parts of our world.

Dottie is survived by her children: Melinda Caye Bernt (Ron), Charles G. Caye Jr., (Susan Darby), and Morris G. Caye (Beth Gutzweiler). Grandchildren: Heath W. Agee Sr., Lindsay Caye Gilliland (Sean), Jonathan Burns Agee (Margery), Charles G. Caye III, Adrienne Caye Chamberlin (Tray), Caroline C. Caye and great grandchildren: Whit Agee, Finn Gilliland, Langley Chamberlin and Vivienne Chamberlin.

A private service was held at Highlands Memorial Gardens in Highlands, N.C.  The Caye family would like to thank the staff at Brandon Wilde in Augusta, Ga. for their superior care that was provided to Dottie over the past several years. Also, the family tremendously thanks and acknowledges Dottie’s caretaker, Janice Seymore, who was a true blessing to her, as well as to the family.
