Scott McRae

Ramah, N.M - Where to Begin? That's how Scott McRae titled his column of observations that ran in The Franklin Press during his editorship and for several years thereafter.

McRae, 59, died unexpectedly in Albuquerque on Thursday, June 18, following a short illness. He was born on July 11, 1949, in Atlanta. He graduated from North Fulton High School and attended West Georgia College. McRae began with The Press as a reporter in 1981 under the late Bob Sloan. He was named editor in 1989, and held that position until he left in June 1997 to move to Arizona and pursue a career as a freelance writer. At the time of his death, McRae was living on a 40-acre ranch in Ramah, N.M., with his wife, the former Denise Grant, enjoying a successful career as a freelancer and ghostwriter.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his mother, Jo McRae of Atlanta, his father and stepmother, Jim and Barbara McRae of Franklin, his brother Keith and wife Helen McRae and his sister Leigh and husband Morrill Hay of Atlanta; half-sister Rebekah and husband Mickey Leverette, of Canton, Ga.; and half-brother Sam McRae of Franklin and Iraq. Several nieces and nephews, stepchildren, stepgrandchildren and other relatives and friends also survive. McRae was buried at his ranch in Ramah.

Scott’s memorial service will be at 4:30 on Saturday, August 22, St. Agnes Episcopal Church. There will be a reception afterwards.

Memorials may be made to Macon County Care Network (CareNet), 130 Bidwell St., Franklin NC.
