Mr. Callahan was my Math teacher in the 5th and 6th grade in 1982-83. I was talking about great teachers with my husband and Mr. Callahan and Mrs. Wagner came up in the conversation. I am saddened to discover his passing. They both knew how to command your attention and had a great dynamic about their friendship; both were consistent and reliable. It was the first time I switched classrooms for another main subject and I recall him standing rather still at the door smiling at everyone, though he had a mustache at that time, he made sure the kids settled in to their seats. The last time I saw him was at Mrs. Wagner's retirement party and he gave me a horseshoe book holder after I spoke. He had welded together 3 horseshoes in a creative way-I thought at the time that was pretty cool. Mr. Callahan was a great and memorable person with a larger than life personality. I even have more respect for him now as I try and teach math to my son and computer art programs to my students. I hope he is resting peacefully.

Mr Callahan was either my 5th or 6th Madie Ives School Teacher in the late 50s or early 60's can't remember, but what I do remember was he pick me up and pinned me to the wall a his eye level and probably gave a few words of advice and also he had a Chevy Corvette Gold fastback and we would wait around 3:30 on 12th in Ives and he would smoke the tires for us!!RIP Mr Callahan

Do you know how many kids have written about how much they loved him as a teacher from Ives elementary?
If anyone is on Facebook look under the old Ives optimist club and there are many wonderful memories of him from all the Madie Ives kids who still keep in touch . We remember him fondly. Our deepest condolences!

I am not on facebook. But I a came across this article and I too was saddened to read about Mr. Callahan's passing. I had Mrs. Wagner as well in grade 5/6 split year and then again for grade six at Madie Ives in 1969-1970 school years. I remember both of them fondly, loved them as my teachers, and now today I really do teach 6th in Ohio. I remember their ways and methods and it completely satisfies my need to "go back" into the best time of my childhood in Miami at Madie Ives.

Like many others here, I was one of Mr. Callahan's students. I had him for math in 6th grade. A very memorable man I thought of him often over the years. He gave me a great foundation in math skills and classroom behavior. My condolences to his family on your loss.

I am sorry to hear of Jim's passing. I taught with him at Madie Ives for 13 years. He was a dedicated teacher and it was a joy to have worked with him. He was always a pretty cool teacher and a very good one at that. I know that he will be missed but know that he is with the FATHER and that is a good place to be. My prayers are with you and your family but know that his spirit will always be there with you. May God strengthen you when it seems like you can't go on.

My sincere condolences to Cindy, Jamie and all of Jim's family. He was like an Uncle to me for over 40 years of my life, and I loved him dearly. I lost touch with him about three years ago, when I tried to call him and found his phone was disconnected and had been told he had moved permanently to NC, but didn't know where. I just found out last week he was in Franklin and had planned to go up and visit after the holidays. I'm so sorry I missed seeing him. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.

Thoughts and prayers to your family from ours. Mr. Callahan was an amazing person and teacher, he fought myself and my father years before me as a 4th grade teacher at Madie Ives. He was one of those teachers that has a lasting memory to those lives he's touched.

I had Mr. Callahan in the 5th grade for Math at Madie Ives. I am 61 now. His style of teaching was hands on and he made learning fractions fun using hand made blocks! Loved it! I had a huge crush on him. Such a handsome man! He was a great teacher! So sorry to hear of his passing. So happy to see his face again!

Mr. Callahan was my 5th grade teacher at Madie Ives Elementary. The first day of class he said to me "Oh no, not another one." Got to see him 5 years ago at the Ives Reunion and we chatted a bit. A dedicated teacher who was tough but fair and extremely nice when you behaved. They don't make them like him anymore. He was one of my favorites.
